Cisco-Linksys Wireless-G Cable Gateway (WCG200) Review

Cisco-Linksys Wireless-G Cable Gateway (WCG200)

The WCG200 V2 still has several software/firmware defects, the most annoying of which is dropped connections several times a day. To restore communications, a cold boot is required.
The convenience of an all-in-one solution is outweighed by the time wasted in reestablishing connections. If you telecommute using SSH or Telnet over VPN then DO NOT BUY THIS ITEM.

I needed a replacement Wifi adapter for my HP laptop because the OEM built in chip died. I bought this adapter because a review I read said it worked well with their Linux computer. In Linux it is true plug and play. I use Mepis Linux and I plugged it in, went to the Mepis control to input my WEP key and clicked apply and I was surfing the web. The link level of the OEM chip indicated 52. From the same spot in the house with this adapter my monitor reads 82.
I have Windows Vista installed on this computer also and it works well with Vista too. The included software CD was needed for Vista and after inputting the WEP key in Vista I had to reboot Windows to get it to work, but it works well once it is installed.

I purchased this unit because my linksys cable modem/wireless router combined unit was not working (despite being brand new) with my system. I hooked back up my motarola surfboard and this unit, and within 20 minutes I had internet on my wireless notebook and on my desktop. Very easy set up, easy to follow book and instructions, and CD support software is excellent also. I go this for a steal with rebates. Highly recommended.

NETGEAR Wireless-N 150 USB Adapter WNA1100 Review

NETGEAR Wireless-N 150 USB Adapter WNA1100
Average Reviews:

Doesn't even deserve one star, but I need to set something. On two different computers, one with Windows XP and and the other with Windows 7, the device would only work when the software was first installed, before the system was rebooted. After reboot, the device would NOT reconnect. Downloading the latest software didn't fix the problem, it only changed the failure. On Windows 7, the device would eventually reconnect if I disabled and re-enabled the device and otherwise fiddled with the networking stack in some indeterminate way. On XP, the device would reconnect, BUT, the system was unusable. A service named "WifiSvc.exe" would fail with a dialog reporting the failure. After closing the dialog, the service would be restarted and would fail again in one or two minutes, resulting in the dialog reappearing. This constantly reappearing failure dialog and intermittent network service rendered the system unusable.

This router works okay for devices that maintain their wireless connections, but it is terrible for things like Apple laptops or game consoles. About once a day, the device ends up in a state where nothing can connect to the wireless connection. Anything still on wireless will continue to function, though. I've tried everything from changing channels to turning off Wireless N support to no avail. The biggest laugh was the last firmware update promised more reliable WiFi. My final solution is going to be to throw this garbage in the trash and avoid netgear products like the plague from now on.

Cisco-Linksys Wireless-N PCI Adapter with Dual-Band (WMP600N) Review

I bought this wireless card because my old wireless card that was working fine on windows xp was not compatible. I bought a new dell that had Windows 7 professional 64 bit. Surprisingly, not a lot of wireless cards would say whether they're Windows 7 compatible. I read the box on this unit and said it worked on Vista 64 bit. Once at home, i disregarded the instructions and installed the card first. Upon bootup, Windows 7 had already detected and properly installed the wireless card. It worked seamlessly. Once installed, Windows 7 Update founded a more update driver for the card.
I'll post updates if i notice anything odd about this card. At this moment, I'm getting a Fair Connection with my router. The router is located at the other end of the hallway.
The price is another story...yes it's very over price.

The Ultra RangePlus Wireless-N PCI Adapter with Dual-Band adds wireless connectivity to your desktop computer.Install it into an available slot in your computer, and enjoy great high-speed wireless network access without running wires. The Wireless-N PCI Adapter uses the very latest wireless networking technology, Wireless-N (draft 802.11n).By overlaying the signals of multiple radios for each band, Wireless-N's "Multiple In, Multiple Out" (MIMO) technology is designed to multiply the effective data rate.Unlike ordinary wireless networking technologies that are confused by signal reflections, MIMO actually uses these reflections to increase the range and reduce "dead spots" in the wireless coverage area. The robust signal travels farther, maintaining wireless connections much farther than standard Wireless-G.

AmbiCom WL300N-AR Wireless 802.11b/g/n 300 Mbps Cable/DSL Router Review

AmbiCom WL300N-AR Wireless 802.11b/g/n 300 Mbps Cable/DSL Router
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
First problem was my mistake. I was looking for a DSL modem/router combo and did not read the description well enough. However, I was able to easilly set it up as an access point and connect it to my current DSL Modem/Router combo. I turned off the wireless features from the old router and everything works fine for me in that regard.
300 Mbps? Not so sure about that. All of my current 802.11n wireless cards have the most recent firmware and drivers and the best I can get is 150 Mbps about a foot away from the router. Ten feet away, it drops off to about 135 Mbps and in the worst case scenario, its still better than my wireless G that I used to use. However, I bought this for the ability to stream multimedia throughout my house and my 802.11n equipped media extender is still connecting at less than desireable speeds.
Another issue that I had (and it was not mentioned in the documentation for the router OR the documentation for two of my HP laptops) is that YOU NEED to change your wireless security settings to WPA2. I was using WPA and could only connect at a max 54 Mbps. Apparently it is a problem with some routers and wireless cards that use the Ateros chipset. Neither HP, nor ambicom were able to resolve the issue and HP even sent a new WiFi card for my laptop thinking that would fix the problem. A bit of googling informed me about the slower speed issues and changing to WPA2 fixed the problem. HP support is now aware of the issue and has even thanked me for informing them of how I resolved the issue.
Is it better than what I had before? Yes. Is it as good as I expected? No, not yet. Hopefully a firmware update will resolve some of the speed issues and I'll be able to get the full 300Mbps (Yes, I have it set up to run "n" only and have no g devices on my network.)

I had to post this review when I read the other 2 bad reviews. This device seemed shoddy as well, i.e. I had to reboot it sometimes several times a day to get it to work, until I realized that it wasn't the device's fault at all. It was the lousy recycled cable modem that the Time Warner provided me. I confirmed this with a few tech support calls and Time Warner replaced the modem (they're fault so I didn't have to pay extra for the service call.) After that my Linksys WRTP54G router has been 100% perfect. In fact, it does static IP w/ Port forwarding (unlike the D-Link) which is essential for the fastest peer-to-peer downloads if you like downloading from multiple computers wirelessly. And who cares if the router has firewall or not. Your PC already has one that works fine. I highly recommend this Linksys WRTP54G.

D-Link DIR-825 Xtreme N Dual Band Gigabit Router Review

D-Link DIR-825 Xtreme N Dual Band Gigabit Router
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I am a Linksys person and I teach a Wireless course using Linksys products. I have been using Linksys products since their 802.11b wired routers first became available. I recently purchased the WRT610N and after trying this D-Link, I am sorry I chose the Linksys WRT610N.
As my first D-link product, I failed to realize D-link uses a 192.168.0.1 network address for its router. I am used to 192.168.1.1 on Linksys products.
PROs:
It is a Dual-Band wireless router, just like the WRT610N. It allows you to schedule wireless access. It has a great manual, which even tells you how to hook up one router to another for extending coverage. I was surprised to see this. I like being able to adjust power output of wireless radios. I love the idea of Guest wireless internet zones. It allows guests, such as friends, to get on your network without having access to local resources or giving out your normal SSID/Password.
It clearly has more options than the Linksys WRT610N, which can be seemingly less user freindly and requires more knowledge of networking. The web configuration screens are similar to Linksys screens though. Anyone familiar with Linksys can find their way around. I did not try the setup CD. Instead I manually configured it using the web interface.
I did not experience any of the instability issues I had with WRT610N. With a Lenovo T61, Apple TV, iPhone, two Macs, a PS3, and a PC connected to a Buffalo LinkStation Gaming Adapter, I needed to find the least common denominator wireless settings in order for all of these devices to connect and stay connected successfully. There were just too many disconnects, which necessitated the least common denominator approach. This approach meant I had to choose "Mixed BG" instead of "mixed (which includes n), had to set channel width to 20, and had to use Tkip WPA only. The D-link allowed me to use all three speed grades (B, G, and N) with WPA or WPA2 (becuase it autodetects the best encryption method available with client devices). I was also able to set the Channel Width to auto (40 or 20 depending on the clients).
CONs:
It only allows up to 63 alpha characters for the wireless passphrase/password. I prefer 64 hex character passwords.
The menus are a bit more complex, which could be an issue for some.
Only one person at a time can access a USB hard drive attached to the D-Link wireless router. Many can access the USB hard drive hanging off of the Linksys WRT610N.
OVERALL:
This is a great wireless router. I tested it as a drop-in replacement for my Linksys WRT610N (after changing the subnet to 192.168.1.x) and it performed admirably. If you are looking, I would consider this strongly before purchasing any other brand.DECEMBER 2009 UPDATE: When my company moved to a webpage-based VPN solution (we have to access a webpage and login which then opens up the tunnels), I discovered that the firmware version (1.01) I had caused issues. I upgraded to version 1.12NA and now I am experiencing daily wireless connectivity dropouts on the 2.4 ghz band. The only solution thus far is to restart the router. This new development has been detailed across the web. I am going to try some of the suggestions, such as any one or a combination of...disabling DNS Relay, disabling IPV6 on client computers, downgrading to 1.11.
SECOND DECEMBER UPDATE: After disabling the DNS Relay, I have been running for over a week with no issues.

Eye-Fi Pro X2 8 GB Class 6 SDHC Wireless Flash Memory Card EYE-FI-8PC Review

Eye-Fi Pro X2 8 GB Class 6 SDHC Wireless Flash Memory Card EYE-FI-8PC
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
First off, there are several different Eye-Fi models so I suggest you get the one with the features you need. The "X2" models now have the Class 6 rating which is great news for fast D-SLR's with high megapixels (18+, etc) or taking 1080p HD video to ensure the data transfer rate can keep up with the recording.
The X2 adds the Class 6 rating, 802.11 b/g/n capability and endless memory. All of which were major concerns with the older models when using them in modern D-SLRs.
I chose this one because the X2 Pro offers RAW image transfers and Ad hoc mode. If you do not take pictures in RAW format and/or do not care to transfer directly from Camera to Laptop via WiFi, then get the X2 Explore for $50 cheaper.
Setup is a breeze. When you first put the card into the computer, it will ask if you want to install the software. You can use the web based settings manager if you do not want to install any software. I chose to install the Eye-Fi Manager software. Very functional.
The first thing it will ask you to do is to select a network to connect to. I chose mine at home and configured the WPA2 security in seconds.... it connected and asked me to put the card into my camera and take a test picture.
I did so and withing seconds, my T2i's display showed that the eye-fi was connected and transferring data. The computer software system tray icon lit up and confirmed this too.
I took an 18mp picture for the test which turned out to be about 22mb RAW and 7mb jpeg. It finished the transfer quickly.
There are many custom features you can set to tell it what to do with the pictures. I have mine set to transfer to my HDD and MobileMe account. There are about 25 online services you can automatically upload to.
I do like the fact that you can set it to upload to a "private" album so it is not automatically "shared".
You can add multiple cards to one account and manage them all through the software. I currently have 3 Eye-Fi cards (2 x 8GB X2 Pro for my D-SLR and 1 x 8GB X2 Explore for my point and shoot).
You can configure each card separately to deliver the pictures where you would like them.
I recommend this card.
UPDATE: I have been using this card all day today and through several battery cycles. There is a significant drop in battery life while using this card, which is understandable because it is transmitting via WiFi.
I am using the Canon T2i and the camera has an Eye-Fi menu within which I can disable the WiFi. The battery does last longer when I shut off the Eye-Fi card (WiFi). So something to think about, maybe get a spare battery or get a camera with Eye-Fi menu support.

ASUS RT-N16 - Wireless Router - 802.11b/g/n (draft) - 3 external antenna - Print/File server (enabled through USB port) Review

ASUS RT-N16 - Wireless Router - 802.11b/g/n (draft) - 3 external antenna - Print/File server (enabled through USB port)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I have been looking for a router with decent range, speed, support for USB based external NTFS drives and last but not the least, good QoS support for VoIP phones. Another important thing that perhaps everyone wants but forgets to mention is reliability. I expect it to keep on working once it has been setup.
I have had this router for just couple of days so far and cannot comment on reliability yet, but other requirements have been met quite well. The specs were something to die for - 480MHz (capable of 533MHz) processor, 128MB RAM, 32MB ROM and runs Linux with support for bittorrent and FTP right in the firmware. Even the firmware source code is GPLed and anyone with a bit of knowledge in this area can improve it. In fact, DD-WRT (an open source Linux based firmware) is already available and works quite well with this router.
With DD-WRT installed on this router, it becomes quite a powerful computer that can serve as a web server as well as a NAS once you connect an external hard drive to the USB port. QoS and Port Forwarding have been implemented quite well in DD-WRT and is the main reason why I had to install DD-WRT within few hours of receiving the router.
[...]
I would have given the router a 4.5 rating if I could as the firmware it came with had a few bugs. I could never get port forwarding to work and also QoS setup in the original firmware is limited.
Here are some pros -
1. Gigabit ethernet, excellent processor and so the performance. Asus claims 300,000 concurrent sessions, which should be enough to handle even commercial hotspots with hundred users.
2. It has 2 USB ports that support various devices. One could connect a USB printer and a cheap external hard drive at the same time. The printer would work as a network printer (available to all computers in the network) and the USB hard drive will be available as Network Attached Storage to everyone without paying hundreds for one such device.
3. DD-WRT availability. They are constantly improving and adding features. QoS (Quality of Service) is one such feature that is needed in any household that has a VoIP phone and lot of online activity in the background like uploading videos to youtube, p2p, online gaming etc. With proper QoS setup phone service or online gaming shouldn't be affected even with other large scale online activity.
4. The original firmware is image based and looks quite nice. I found it very intuitive.
Cons -
1. Should have been dual band (separate bands for G and N traffic), the chipset supports it. I am running in mixed mode as several of my devices (iPhone, Fuze, Wii) support only G mode and in mixed G/N mode, N components operate predominantly at G speed.
2. The original firmware is buggy and I couldn't get port forwarding to work reliably after several tries. QoS, the main reason behind me upgrading from a D-Link, is not implemented as well as I expected. DD-WRT fixes both issues but first-time owners may not be savvy enough to reload a 3rd-party firmware on their brand new router.
All in all, it's an excellent purchase for the capability and price, especially when you consider Cisco charges more (sometimes twice) for routers with slower processors and much less RAM and flash memory.
Update: Updated the links since Amazon yanked them. Also would like to add that the reliability is quite good so far with DD-WRT. Has been running for 3 days straight and no issues/slowdown etc.

As others have mentioned, the product is not new(had an @bellsouth.net PPoE login for a business), but don't let that deter you. It works with no problems on AT&T in West Tennessee. Just make sure you set the correct VPI/VCI settings(VPI 8, VCI 35 for Tennessee, VPI 0 for some other states), put in your PPoE Username and Password, and you are done.
Just to be safe, it would probably be a good idea to factory reset the modem as soon as you get it, no telling what other settings may be lurking in there.
This modem was used to replace a 2Wire 2700HG that was, well, terrible(Unstable, forgets wireless password, drops packets under light wireless usage). I had been using the Qwest model 3347 for the past two years before moving back to Tennessee, so replacing the 2Wire with this was a no-brainer. I replaced the 2Wire at my brother's house with the 3347 from Amazon and it solved his issues as well. I have since ordered another two units for future use/spares.
As a side note for @att.net customers. If you do not know your PPoE password(It is randomly generated by AT&T when you sign up, not chosen by you) just enter a random password. Your modem will still connect, but you will be placed in AT&T's walled garden. Open up your browser and go to any website, it will redirect you to AT&T's internal troubleshooting site. After you verify your DOB or SSN, it will try to determine your modem model for about 10 minutes and say that it cannot. Select that you have a modem from a different source and it will give you your PPoE login information. There is no need to call AT&T.

Two other reviewers slammed this router for performance issues with TiVo and Xbox. I use neither of those products, but this router has worked really well with both my MacBook an my PC laptops. I use it regularly from the basement of my house as well as on my back porch, and performance has been strong and reliable. When my in-laws needed a router, I bought another one and installed it for them. That router has delivered the same reliable performance and range.

Cisco-Linksys Compact Wireless-G Broadband Router WRT54GC Review

Cisco-Linksys Compact Wireless-G Broadband Router WRT54GC

I was thinking of purchasing an Airport Express module, but purchased this instead. It has a lower price, similar size, and a built-in 4-port switch which won me over. It was easy to configure using Safari and it's built-in setup wizard (no software needs to be installed). I got a strong signal on my Powerbook (4 bars on the Airport signal).
It offers WEP, WPA, and WPA2 security. Plus you can define specific times of day the WiFi is active as well as specific computers which can access your network (handy when you are at work and want to make sure no one is piggybacking your WiFi signal). I also connected my PS2 and Vonage VoIP module and everything works flawlessly. I'm a typical Mac user who is used to easy setup and good looking equipment and I'm pleasantly surprised at this Linysys product!
