TRENDnet Wireless 1-Port Parallel Print Server TEW-P1PG (Blue) Review

TRENDnet Wireless 1-Port Parallel Print Server TEW-P1PG (Blue)
Average Reviews:

I converted my LaserJet 5MP (what a workhorse!) to wireless with this unit. It communicates well with the Ubuntu and Windows Vista laptops in the house. Wireless printing is much more convenient than print sharing since you don't have to turn on an extra machine to act as a server.
The documentation could be better and you need a Windows computer (or WINE) to get this running because the web interface doesn't work out of the box. But it's been running fine for weeks now that I've installed it.
I haven't had a problem with signal strength at all and my printer is upstairs while my computer is often downstairs.
I would recommend this adapter with the caveat that it's easy to set up if you know the basics of home networks. From the other reviews and comments, I'd say that if you don't know what an IP address is or how to install a networked printer on your OS, you might want to look elsewhere for something simpler to install.

I recently bought a LCD TV that has an Ethernet connection to get on the internet. I dreaded the thought of running a cable to the TV. After looking around for an easier solution I found this and once I set it up as an "access client" it worked great. If you can set up a wireless router you will have no problem with the set up. It can be used on anything that has an Ethernet connection. I tested it on an older laptop that is just wireless B (11 Mbps), I disabled the wireless on the laptop and just connected the Trendnet to the laptop and now it is much faster on the internet. I also plan on using it on my new Blu-ray player that has the Netflix capability. I misunderstood the PoE feature as being able to draw power through the Ethernet cable like with USB devices, I was wrong and spent $10 more than I had to. Oh-well, lesson learned. Get the "TEW-430APB" unless you really have PoE.

I thought that I could just screw this onto the back of Linksys wireless router(replacing the antenna).
This antenna has some sort of base(and it can't be removed from it, like it can't be unscrewed). . .i think it's for a wireless card, not a router.
I repeat! This is NOT the item in the picture.

Hawking Hi-Gain USB Wireless-300N Access Point/Bridge (White)
Average Reviews:

This is the 4th one of these I am using on my network in Afghanistan. The only thing I have to say is if you are going to set up a wireless link using these, Hawkings says to set one up as an access point and the other as a bridge. When I did this I was getting 90-100% packet loss. I ended up setting them both for AD-Hoc so they would see only the other side. Once I did this I was able to get a 0 packet loss.
I would have given it 5 stars is the setup Hawkings showed worked, instead I had to fiddle around and eventually stumbled on the adhoc and got it working.

I have owned another WIFI model called the Alfa AWUS036H adapter for a while and wanted to get a second one for another computer, but then heard about this Gsky adapter which is also 1/2 watt. The maker Blue Proton says on their blog that it is (and I quote) "better than the Alfa AWUS036H", I should have asked them how they concluded that before I bought it, because it does not work nearly as well for me anyway. I have read it has the same chip as the Alfa, but at least the one I received does not, it is a different model of a Realtek chip (B version). The receive sensitivity at 54 mbps is -65 dbm vs -76 dbm of the Alfa (-76 is better). I also found out that the Gsky is only 15 dbm at 802.11g, which would be about 40 or 50 mW, so it isn't really high powered unless you are okay with a slow connection. There is a signal about a block away from me that is open, I get about 0-1 bars with my Buffalo PCMCIA card that is about 4 years old. With the Alfa I am able to get 3-4 bars. With the Gsky it is usually 1 bar, sometimes 2, so a slight improvement over my Buffalo card, but sometimes it is too weak to use the signal. With the Alfa I can use the signal all the time. For people trying to pick up weak signals I would suggest shelling out the extra cash for the Alfa or something else.

I bought this device to work with my Linksys Wireless-G router to provide better wireless to a problem spot in my house. I have a Mac, so the setup disk was useless at the start. My attempts at mannually configuring the device failed, the online articles were not helpful, so I broke down and called Linksys support. I should have done that first thing. After a short wait, I got through to a very competent support person who asked some questions aboutmy wireless network. I needed to update my very out-of-date firmware on my wirless router (which was the problem with my first attempts), then she was able to easily walk me through configuring the device. Best support call I've ever had. Since then the product has worked flawlessly and I have full-strength wireless anywhere in the house.
Good product with excellent support.

This antenna does work. It's all in the way you position it. It's design leaves a little to be desired but, if you position it just right, it works. I connected the antenna to my router, ran the cable under my scanner and up through the back so the antenna sits on top of the scanner. My signal went from "Low" and "Very Low" to "Very Good" on both my wireless N equipped PC and Laptop. Considering the router is on the other side of my apartment in my bedroom; some 60 feet away with a wall in between, it's great. I would recommend it.

I had no problem at all installing this device. I like the fact it has a small docking station with a USB cable that allows it to sit on top of my PC where I can see it and has better direct lines of sight with the router, plus I can see the activity light. I have no complaints about the software. I used the WPS feature (aka Push-N-Connect) to connect to a WPS-enabled router. A great feature - everything done for you. I also used the manual setup to connect to an outside network, and it seems pretty straightforward to me. Way better and way easier than my old wireless b/g device.

NETGEAR RangeMax Next Wireless Router WNR834M - Wireless router - 4-port switch - 802.11b/g/n (draft) - desktop
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I am currently using a WNR834M RANGEMAX Next Wireless Router with a WN511T RANGEMAX Next Wireless Notebook Adapter and a WN311T RANGEMAX Next Wireless PCI Adapter. All of the equipment has the latest firmware and software utilities available from Netgear's website. I currently have no other wireless devices connected to my network. I also can only see a couple of networks near my home. They only have at most a 30% signal. So I do not believe I am getting any interference from those networks. I have also turned off anything in my home that gives off a signal.
I am unable to stream music from one wireless device to the other without the song skipping. Also if I attempt to surf the internet while doing this the connection speed varies greatly and if I do a constant ping I fail to get a response about 50% of the time from the router itself. The same symptoms occur if I transfer any data from one wireless device to the other. The box states I should be able to do all of these simultaneously and much more. As far as online gaming is concerned some games will not even connect due to the packet lose that is occurring. If I plug both computers directly into the router without using the wireless everything works fine.
I have 8 years experience in the IT field and have tried several different troubleshooting steps to resolve the issue. I have tried adjusting security settings, channels, radio frequency, MTU size, wireless optimization settings, and more. Nothing has solved the issue. As a last resort I decided to call Netgears 24/7 support line to see if someone could offer up another idea. After repeating several of the steps already mentioned the technician in India admitted she could not help me any further and a higher level technician would be calling me in the next 24 to 48 hours to assist me in resolving the issue. I have not had a call back yet.
When I hook up my old WRT54g Linksys 802.11b/g router to my WMP11 Wireless-B PCI adapter and my WPC54G Wireless-G Notebook adapter I have a more stable local area network.
I will be returning all 3 of these Netgear products.

I had my first WRT54GS for nearly 6 years before a lightning surge took it out. I had also flashed the firmware to DDWRT and boosted its wireless output 3x to 70w and added high-gain anttennea. This is a great performer and I replaced my burnt router with this same make and model. I love it, and since I have mostly "G" equipment I didn't feel the need to move to "N" standards. This more than covers my house and out-buildings with a strong signal.

this router is working great for me as a repeater/internet bridge. I must say that initially i was confused during configuration as it seemed that if i made a change using the web interface and applied it, sometimes i would notice that something i did earlier would get wiped out. this may have been intentional (for example my changes may have been in conflict), because when i used the 'one click setup' option in the web interface everything worked just fine. The router has been working consistently for 2 months now and i have never had to reboot it.

Average Reviews:

I am writing this review just to inform people with Verizon wireless service, using the Verizon USB720 (Novatel U720) modem to be aware of possibly compatibility problems. The situation is pretty simple. When my modem is plugged directly into my laptop, it works almost 100% of the time. When I plug it into the KR1 router, it freezes up every few minutes. When this happens, there is no connection or IP address listed on the "status" page. This freezing occurs until I unplug the router or sometimes after 5 to 10 minutes it fixes itself. It is just not usable this way. Kyocera replaced the router under warranty and the problem is exactly the same. I did upgrade the firmware on both routers. This matter was escalated to D-Link support and they were unable to fix the problem. They are now looking into getting me a different model of router to resolve this. The U720 modem is new, so hopefully they will work the bugs out, but I wanted to make sure this information was available to other buyers. Both Kyocera and Verizon assured me the two units were compatible before I purchased them. I am now locked into a contract with Verizon without a working router and I wouldn't have done that if I'd known of this situation.

I use this with a AT&T option GT Ultra PCMCIA card and a Seirra 882u USB card and both work great. D-Link DGL-4300 Wireless 108G Gaming Router Review

D-Link DGL-4300 Wireless 108G Gaming Router
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I'm a computer professional so technology is not much of a mystery to me, but I still want something that's solid, and easy to manage. The internal software to his unit is pretty good, and the performance is top notch. For one its easy to store, and save your configurations. This is important because there may be occasion where you have to reset the router, and your settings would be lost. The firmware was easy to update, and will need to be updated as soon as you connect the device. A word of caution here, if you are using a dial-up connection, (unless its always been very stable), I don't recommend upgrading the firmware with it. One thing you cannot do, because it will likely render the router useless, is lose your connection in the middle of a firmware upgrade.
This is a gamer modem, and the help files and web manual provide good information as to how to set it up. It even has the settings to port replicate many popular game already built in. In addition, it has a special gamer network traffic section to keep your games running on an even keel over your network. I works, but better with some games than others. While I can't speak for any screaming, bleeding edge speed boosters, it seemed fast. I connected my old Windows 98SE machine using a Hawking, USB, wireless receiver, and it just worked! I experienced none of the problems I'd read horror stories about with other wireless routers.
Connection is a snap. Disconnect your cable modem from the back of your comp, connects its ethernet cable to your new D-Link router, run the included cable from the D-link to your ethernet port on your comp. (If your computer was connected with USB, you might need a $10 ethernet PCI card if you don't have an ethernet connection.) Turn everything back on, and (at least in my case, it just worked). If your running it as a network, and not just a single firewall, I'd recommend the most modern computer for the wired connection. The rest can either go wired or wireless. I got excellent signal strength, and have yet to experience a dropout on my wireless machine. For those who don't know, a wireless router is normally wired to the first machine (wired connections are generally faster and more solid than wireless). The wireless part is generally for other computers and network devices (like printers and such) to be connected to the wireless part of the network. In the past all connections to a router were wired. If you have one computer you can use an access point, instead of a firewall, but with the exception of this one, (which is expensive) most access points cost near the same as a four port wireless router.
Ok, now the bad news. It is a complicated piece of tech, and to do some things, people might need help. My advice is to read the FAQ's, and go to the web boards. I needed to get it to host a BattleNet game. I had the correct ports replicated as an exception, but it didn't work. I called the tech serve, and a typical moron told me how to ping the system with Windows command line. I spent a half hour trying to tell him I was connected fine, and could even play the game I wanted (Warcraft III Frozen Throne), but could not host a game. He couldn't answer a few simple questions, and finally admitted he didn't know anything about networking, but was reading from a test script. He agreed to transfer me to level 2 technicians. When I spoke to them they couldn't answer my questions either, and gave some lame excuse that if they told me how to host on BNet it would make my network insecure, and they would be liable to a lawsuit. Give me a break, you create a gamer router, and even include the ports listed for that game, then won't tell your customers how to set it up. I just don't think they held up their end of the bargain (D-Link support that is).
After two days of testing it, I finally figured out, I had to create virtual servers for each port separately, then create a static IP address, and connect it up to the dynamically created one from Comcast. That would allow the virtual servers to be used by the gamers connecting to the host machine, to connect to a defined, unchanging address, which would connect to whatever other address came up dynamically by the service provider, using the DCHP server. It sounds complicated to a non-network guy, and it is. I'd have like to been told how to do that by tech serve, but they were too incompetent so it was just trial and error, plus a lot of reading.
Bottom line is if you've gone though the router trials before, this will probably be a good experience. If not, prepare to educate yourself on the wonderful world of networking. I do recommend routers to be used as firewalls to all computer users who access the web, gamers or not. Hackers are banging on your computers ports all day long on the web, and with a hardware router, they only see a router, not the computers hidden behind it. If your not a gamer, this one is pricey, but if you want the latest greatest, as of today, this is pretty much it.

The good:
Received the product quickly and plugged it in and was up and running at N speed in ~10 seconds, not too shabby. Speed was far and above what I ever got with G, and it works all over my house.
The less than good:
Despite the 300mps claim, I'm pretty sure that the theoretical max of this card is locked at 150mps, and unlike every other wireless card I've ever used, the reported speed does not lower automatically based on real time performance statistics, it always says "150mps".
Why oh why do companies insist on putting OUTRAGOUSLY bright blue lights on things? I had to put a piece of electrical tape over the blue light because it was lighting my bedroom...
It also gets pretty darned hot - which so long as it keeps running doesn't bother me, but experience has shown me that devices that run really hot don't tend to last.
Overall a good product, but I can't give it 5 stars.
