D-Link DWL-G120 Wireless USB Adapter, 802.11g, 54Mbps Review

D-Link DWL-G120 Wireless USB Adapter, 802.11g, 54Mbps

I purchased 2 D-Link DWL-G120 802.11g adapters from Amazon through Office Depot to use on two Tivo DVR's. I wanted the extra speed of these adapters, which were the only 802.11g adapters recommended by Tivo. I bought them specifically to make use of the Tivo To Go features that allows you to watch a show on one Tivo that was recorded on another one via the network and to transfer recordings from a Tivo to my PC. Neither feature worked with these adapters. If you read the Tivo website carefully, you will see they recommend D-Link DWL-G120 version B2. The Amazon website did not indicate what version was being sold. I was shipped the B1 version and they keep losing the connection whenever I try to transfer recordings from one Tivo to the other or to my PC. A Tivo person on their community forum verified that a different chipset is on the B2 and that the B1 causes hangups and freezes like what I experienced.
By the way, I don't think the 802.11g makes the transfers any faster than 802.11b. Even when the transfers were working before freezing, the speed was about the same or slower than real time. I've read technical reviews on other adapters and they all say the same thing. Of course, Tivo doesn't mention this in all their hype about Tivo to Go.
I emailed Office Depot to see if I could get a refund or exchange them for the proper version. So far, no reply from Office Depot. To be fair, the first adapter was defective, but Office Depot shipped me a replacement within 3 business days after I phoned them, not that it mattered as it turned out. I'll give them a great review as a merchant if they take back the two I still have.
My advice, pay the extra cost and buy adapters direct from Tivo. Then you only have one vendor to deal with if problems develop. If I ever get the B2 version and they work well, I'll post a new review, but for now I'm giving these adapters the lowest rating possible - 1 star.

NETGEAR WPN111NA Wireless Mimo Usb Adapter Review

NETGEAR WPN111NA Wireless Mimo Usb Adapter
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I bought this product to replace an outdated Linksys WUSB54G adapter and to match up with my MIMO router. The product manages to do what its supposed to, sort of.
Pros:
Versatile - Can be used with or without a USB extension cable, so small it is easily portable.
When it was connected, throughput was extremely high.
Decent range, 75% signal strength over ~100ft. and through one wall.
Cons:
Device gets excessively hot.
Inconsistent performance.
Poor device support. When download speeds peaked, at over 22400 (2.8mb/s roughly) the device would cause the system to hang. A check at the Netgear forums revealed that I was not the only member with this issue, so I got the latest device drivers from the website. After installing them, I fired up a few files and for the first ten minutes or so all seemed well. Suddenly the device failed and lost connection to the router. A quick check elsewhere revealed it was only this device that failed, and now I experience near constant disconnects when throughput gets anywhere over 500kb/s. Same issue occurs with multiple systems.
Tech support was unhelpful in resolving my issue.
I would recommend the Linksys WUSB300N over this item, as I have had no problems since switching over, it installs in seconds, and I get a much stronger more consistent connection than what I have ever maintained with the WPN111.

The NETGEAR WPN111 RangeMax USB 2.0 Adapter makes it simple for you to provide wireless internet access to your computer, whether it is a desktop or notebook, letting you surf the web, check email, and chat online. It is up to ten times faster and has up to ten times more coverage than Wireless-G for a speedy network that won't get bogged down when you you stream music and videos.
Easy to Carry, Easier to Setup About the size of a pack of gum, the WPN111 is easy to throw into your purse or pocket. It supports Windows Vista and is also compatible with Windows XP, 2000, 98SE, and Me. The WG111US features a USB 2.0 connection for wide compatibility and high speeds, and setup is as simple as installing the included software and plugging the device into a USB port. A removable cover keeps the connector protected and clean from knocks, dirt and other potential harm.
Included is a USB cable making it easier to connect the WG111US to a desktop and saving you the hassle of having to reach for the back of the computer each time you want to connect or disconnect the adapter. Additionally, it allows you to place the adapter at an optimal location for the strongest signal. Also included is a cradle that you can fasten to the wall or a desk for a more stable place to keep the adapter once you've found an ideal location.
Fast and Secure The NETGEAR WPN111 supports the 802.11g protocol standard but is able to provide better performance thanks to Smart MIMO technology that incorporates intelligent internal antennas into the router. The router automatically senses interference from devices such as microwaves and cordless phones, and adjusts accordingly. The upshot is speeds up to 108 Mbps with a longer range and a lack of "dead zones" in your home. The adapter is also backwards compatible with 802.11b networks so you don't have to worry about not getting a connection at specific hotspots.
The adapter supports 40/64-bit and 128-bit WEP encryption as well as WPA-PSK for security so you don't have to worry about anyone eavesdropping on your emails or stealing your passwords. The included software makes managing different WEP passwords a breeze as you can set up different profiles for each location you frequent, saving yourself the trouble of having to type in encryption keys each time you connect to a hotspot you've already used.
The NETGEAR WPN111 RangeMax USB 2.0 Adapter is backed by a 1-year warranty.
What's in the Box WPN111 RangeMax USB 2.0 Adapter, USB cable, installation guide, resource CD, cradle and fastener, and warranty/support information card.

ZyXEL G4100 802.11g HotSpot Service Gateway With 3 Button Thermal Printer Review

ZyXEL G4100 802.11g HotSpot Service Gateway With 3 Button Thermal Printer
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
We had high hopes when we tried the Zyzel G-4100 out in a coffeehouse and a motel as a hotspot router. The integrated printer seemed really convenient, and the router promised all sorts of powerful security features. And it had this really cool look to it - sort of like Hal from the movie "2001."
Come to think of it, maybe its resemblance to Hal ("I'm sorry, Dave, I can't do that") should have been a warning to us, because this product isn't delivering. As the manufacturer admitted to us, a single user running BitTorrent (and LOTS of users try to run BitTorrent at public hotspots) can crash the router. So can a significant load from just a few users running other network-intensive applications. The printer will, at random times, not produce a ticket, requiring a reboot of the router. At other times, the router's internal Web server crashes, so we cannot even log in to control the router. Guests at the venues have complained and staff have gotten extremely frustrated. The router often has to be rebooted once or twice daily.
We don't have access to the internal source code of the product, so we cannot pinpoint the bugs. However, the crashes appear to correlate with the number of connections to the outside world that have been made in the past 5 minutes. (Note that your browser can make a dozen or more connections just to fetch all the parts of one Web page.) Too many, and things start to go wrong. Not always immediately, but eventually. Probably due to a "memory leak," an uninitialized pointer, memory corruption, or some other error in the router's programming.
We contacted Zyxel tech support, and they told us that the device "wasn't intended for heavy loads." (I'd hardly consider a few users in a coffeehouse to be a heavy load, and even if it were the router should certainly handle the situation gracefully and not crash.) They finally suggested that we put a second router behind the hotspot router to take some of the load off it. Is this something one should have to do with a router that sells for around $500, especially when the same load won't crash routers that sell for a tenth of the price?
Bottom line: Zyxel simply will not own up to the fact that their firmware has bugs and needs fixing.
We then contacted a colleague who does Internet in hotels and resorts. Turns out we should have called him before making the initial purchase. He said that his company had sold off more than 100 of these routers because they were a constant source of trouble. He also told us that these routers very often blow out their power supplies. (He thought that the power supplies shipped with the units either were of poor quality or weren't rated to supply enough current for the device, and recommended that we substitute one with a higher current rating.) Indeed, we had a power supply fail on us; we thought it was a chance occurrence until we spoke to him.
We really want to keep using this product, because it has a lot of features we like. But unless Zyxel quits making excuses and comes up with stable firmware that's sufficiently robust to operate a real life public hotspot, we're going to have to eBay it and find something that works. Or maybe build our own. We could homebrew something quite nice for the same $500 or so.
I hope to be able to update this review one day to say that Zyxel fixed their bugs. But at the moment, all we can say is that we don't recommend buying this product. It crashes, it freezes, and the manufacturer denies that anything is wrong. Save your money.

Apple M8799LL/A AirPort Extreme Base Station with Modem and Antenna Port Review

Apple M8799LL/A AirPort Extreme Base Station with Modem and Antenna Port
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Got this primarily so we could work anywhere in the house on our PC laptops. Granted, a Linksys wireless router would have been cheaper, but the Airport Extreme also serves as a wireless print server and that (plus the fact that our primary computer is a Mac) was what sealed the deal for us. Our cabling setup is:
Cable modem -> Linksys Wired 4-Port Router -> Airport Extreme -> Lexmark Optra E312L
Our laptops use Linksys Wireless-G cards and get good reception throughout the house. Our G4 and PS2 are hooked directly into the wired Linksys Router for their connectivity. The trick to using it with an existing router is to turn off the NAT addressing feature of the Airport Extreme so that it acts only as an Ethernet "bridge" to the wireless computers; the Linksys router assigns all the IP addresses for everything on the system including the PC laptops. The PCs can print wirelessly to the laser printer via the Airport and so can the Mac. Bonus!
Setup was very quick - about 15 minutes to get everything plugged in. The hard part was getting the security set up correctly (and yes, you'd better secure your wireless network) as the format for passwords was different on the Mac vs. PC platforms. Had to do some Web searches to find out how to make them speak the same language (hex). Has worked flawlessly since then. If I had to do it over, would buy it again in a heartbeat.

The AirPort Extreme Base Station with Modem and Antenna Port is compatible with the industry-standard 802.11b wireless networking protocol, which means all AirPort products, as well as Wi-Fi certified 802.11b wireless products. For higher performance you will need to have both the Airport Extreme Card and the AirPort Extreme Base Station. The range of AirPort Extreme is up to 50 feet at 54 Mbps and up to 150 feet at 11 Mbps. The Base Station can be used in conjunction with an Ethernet connection (such as with a cable modem, DSL modem, or Ethernet network) through the integrated Ethernet port, or with a telephone line through a modem.
The AirPort Extreme Base Station with Modem and Antenna Port also supports USB or Ethernet wireless printer sharing. Just plug in a compatible USB or Ethernet printer and with Mac OS X on your computer you can quickly and easily print. You can use the new USB port to attach a USB printer or use the 10/100BASE-T Ethernet LAN port to plug in an Ethernet printer directly into the base station.
With the new AirPort Extreme Base Station with Modem and Antenna Port, up to 50 users can work and play on the Internet simultaneously up to 150 feet away from an Ethernet connection or a phone line. The Base Station comes equipped with a built-in firewall to protect sensitive data on your computer and the ability to secure transmissions with support for 128-bit encryption.
The AirPort Extreme Base Station with Modem and Antenna Port lets you manage the range of your wireless network. An external antenna port is provided for you to attach an external antenna. There are two types of antennas available: an omni-directional and a directional, which extend the range of the AirPort Extreme base station. There is also a software feature that allows you on reduce the size of your wireless network, down to just a single room for extra privacy.

Upon receiving my G5 Tower, I was appalled to realize that I needed an external Airport Antenna. However, once plugged in, it works perfectly. Without the antenna, the computer can receive a signal (sometimes) within a foot, but with the antenna, I can receive a signal from 30 feet away. Very helpful!

Actiontec Verizon GT704WGB Wireless DSL Gateway Review

Got this for my dad when I finally convinced him to get DSL. It's awful. It's marketed as a "Verizon" wireless modem & router, but it's made by Actiontec. The first one my dad got just up and died after only a few months. You couldn't even connect to it to pull up the diagnostic menu. He returned it to Best Buy and got a replacement. This one needs to be reset at least once a day if not more often. I would never recommend this box to anyone ever in the future.

Panasonic BL-C131A Network Camera Wireless 802.11 Review

Panasonic BL-C131A Network Camera Wireless 802.11
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
My wife and I wanted to keep an eye on the nanny with our baby from work. After researching the network cameras for several months, it seemed that only Panasonic cameras consistently received positive (usually glowing reviews) whereas cameras from other major brands like Linksys, D-Link, etc received mediocre or poor reviews. So I went with Panasonic. And after about a month, I have to say I am very impressed with it. Some background: I have a classic Linksys WRT54G 802.11g router, with 2 WinXP PCs connected to it via ethernet and 3 more PCs connected wirelessly; plus, I have AT&T/SBC DSL service via a Speedstream 5100 DSL modem. If you're moderately computer literate, you should have no problem following the included instructions to setup (view and control) the camera in wired mode or in wireless WiFi mode.
But if you want to setup the camera to be viewed (and controlled) from the internet, you need to do a bit more work. And this is where Panasonic's excellent, excellent customer support comes in. Panasonic's support line is 8_0_0-2_7_2-7_0_3_3; they are open Mon-Fri 9AM-9PM and Sat/Sun 10AM-7PM Eastern US Time; this tech support is available to you for the LIFE of the product. They will walk you through how to setup the camera, configure your router (for, among other things, port forwarding), and register with Panasonic's FREE Dynamic DNS web service. This last point is important: Panasonic network cameras include FREE Dynamic DNS hosting service for the life of the product; other brands offer the service for an annual fee.
Okay, step-by-step, here's how to config the camera for internet viewing:
First, if you use DSL as I do (as opposed to cable broadband), you have to configure the DSL modem for "bridge mode." (If you don't use DSL, then you can skip this step.) This is because DSL modems act as a router, and port forwarding cannot work behind both the DSL modem's router and (in my case) the Linksys WRT54G router. If you want, you can call your DSL tech support to ask them to walk you through how to "bridge" your DSL modem. But here's what I did.
1. Login to your DSL modem (for me, it's 192.168.0.1) using your DSL account (for me, it's my SBCglobal email address).
2. Select Advanced >> PPP Location
3. Select Bridged Mode (PPPoE is not used), then Change PPP Location
4. When prompted, restart the DSL modem
5. Login to your router (for me, it's 192.168.1.1)
6. Under Setup> Basic Setup >> Internet Connection Type, select PPPoE and enter the DSL login & password info you normally would enter in your DSL modem to authenticate your DSL service.
7. At this point, the "bridging" should have been successful. To check that bridging has been successful, click Status >> Router, and check that you are "connected" with an IP address showing. If successful, you should also see that your DSL modem's "internet" LED light is off while your router's "internet" light is on. What you basically have done is to move the point of authentication for your DSL service from the DSL modem to your router; your DSL modem merely acts as a bridge for the DSL service to your router.
8. Now, we move on to configuring the camera itself. I assume that the camera has already been configured for wired and wireless mode. Login to the network camera (for me it's, 192.168.1.253).
9. Click Setup. Change the Port No. from the default of 80 to 50000 (fifty thousand) and enter the IP address of the camera (for me, it's 192.168.1.253). Click Save, and the camera will restart. When it finishes restarting (taking as long as 1.5 min), it'll bring you back to the "Top" home page of the camera config screen.
10. Log back into your router, and go to Applications & Gaming, where you'll be able to set up port forwarding.
11. In the Port Range, enter 50000 as "Start" and 50000 as "End." Enter the IP Address of the camera (for me, 192.168.1.253). Check Enable. Save Settings.
12. Now, log back into your camera. Go to Setup >> DynamicDNS. Select viewnetcam-dot-com, then Next.
13. Click on "Your Account Link" to bring up the viewnetcam.com registration page, where you then select New Registration. Enter your desired registration info and select your domain name at viewnetcam-dot-com (e.g. yourname-dot-viewnetcam-dot-com). Click Choose.
14. Now, you will be shown a page confirming your registration. Under DDNS status, you will see Active-waiting. You need to wait up to 10min as the domain registration occurs, at which time, the status will change to Active.
15. We're almost done; stay with me! From WinXP Start Menu, click Run and type "cmd" to bring up a DOS window.
16. In the DOS window, type "ipconfig/all", which shows your computer's various network information. Under Ethernet adapter Local Area Connection, copy down the two addresses under DNS Servers.
17. Log back into your camera, select Setup, and enter the 2 DNS Server addresses from ipconfig/all in the 2 DNS boxes.
18. Go back to viewnetcam-dot-com, login to your account, and check that the DDNS status is now Active. If so, then you're all ready to go!
19. Go to yourname-dot-viewnetcam-dot-com:50000 to see your network camera on the internet!

D-Link DIR-451 3G Mobile Router for UMTS/HSDPA Networks

I use this router with a pcmciaa Sierra aircard on the Cingular/ATT network. I'm very pleased it extended the capabilities of the card from simply allowing access from my lap top to using it as my overall internet connection at home. Speed is sufficient to play Final Fantasy on the Xbox and even hook up the Vonage router to make phone calls. It's certainly not as fast as my old wired dsl connection but that is not the router's fault just the fact of the cingular/att wireless network. For me this router saves me 50 bucks a month by allowing me to drop my wired connection. I grab my aircard when I leave for work in the morning and then after work and weekends just leave it in the DLink router for around the house always on internet connection. Great router I bet it would be a big seller if more people knew about it.

Belkin F5D6230-3 Wireless Cable/DSL Router Review

Belkin F5D6230-3 Wireless Cable/DSL Router
Average Reviews:

$129.99 is a "hot buy"????
I bought this on clearance from the Belkin website 2 months ago for $30.
I wouldn't even recommend it at that price.
The firewall will not close off everything it leaves "port 0" open no matter what. And the only way to stealth port 80 is by redirecting it to a fake ip address.
It also slows down such that browsing the web becomes an excruciatingly slow experience. The only way to fix it is to unplug the power and plug it back in whenever it goes slow. I have read reports that turning off the router's DHCP server might prevent that from happening... but DHCP is not something you should have to do without.
This is an out of date product. Badly put together. Definitely not worth what Amazon is asking for it.
Try to find a good deal on a Linksys or something... do not walk, RUN away from Belkin products.

Let me start by pointing out that I am a Network Technician. That said, the setup of this device was not easy. Once I got it set up, it works great. I recommend that you have someone who knows what they are doing come in to set this up, especially if you are using WEP or WPA security.
Although I have used this device as a print server, I mostly use it as a wireless network hub. This means I have a wireless connection from my Router to this device, then a wired connection to a PC and XBOX. This is a LOT cheaper than buying a XBOX wireless adapter, and works more reliably than a PC wireless USB receiver (in my application).
Basically, once you get this set up correctly, it will be a great device with great conveniences. the trouble is getting it set up.
NOTE: if you buy this device, be sure to download any updated firmware and software from the NETGEAR website! it will save you a LOT of trouble to do this first!

NETGEAR WN802T RangeMax Next Wireless-N Access Point Gigabit Edition Review

NETGEAR WN802T RangeMax Next Wireless-N Access Point Gigabit Edition
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
My husband has a computer business and has purchased 5 of these devices for various customers. Each and every one of them have failed. Three of them within the 3 months Netgear will provide free support for and two of them after 1 year.
When they work they don't work so well, a lot of disconnects, and network not found. Working with support stated that too many wireless networks in a congested area will cause this. Understandable, but hardware failures are not understandable.
Out of the five of them, Netgear has replaced the three that failed withing the 90 period and they have been taken out of service since then. There were too many network disconnects to be useful.
When they fail the power light comes on, but nothing else. No network light when the cat5 cable is plugged into it, nor does the wireless work on the device either.
My husband made the mistake of purchasing them when they were fairly new and paid over 170.00 per. What a mistake. DO NOT PURCHASE THIS AS IT IS JUNK.

The NETGEAR WN802T RangeMax Next Wireless-N Access Point Gigabit Edition lets you easily set up a wireless network in your home so you can share a single internet connection with everyone in your household at speeds up to 300 Mbps. You can stream music and video, make internet phone calls, videoconference, and surf the web, all at the same time.
Easy Setup The WN802T makes it easy for even a novice to set up a wireless network: just plug the included Ethernet cable from your LAN into the device and insert the included CD into any computer on the network, which will provide step-by-step instructions. The WN802T offers a myriad of placement options by including a stand for vertical placement and also a wall-mount kit.
The WN802T employs a web-based interface for configuration for compatibility with any computer with a web browser. The firmware is also upgradeable via the web interface so you can be sure your access point will always be up-to-date.
New Technology Means Blazing Speeds and Backwards Compatibility The WN802T complies with the latest 802.11n draft specification which allows for speeds up to 300 Mbps; this maximum speed can be achieved when used with other TopDog devices. By utilizing MIMO (multiple-input, multiple-output) technology, the WN802T has speed and range far surpassing the older 802.11g standard. The preset antennas in the access point ensure that the device is always tuned for optimal performance, and NETGEAR's Wi-Fi Multimedia technology optimizes audio, video, and voice applications.
By using Gigabit Ethernet for the backend, you'll be certain that the access point is receiving data at the highest possible speeds, ensuring the 300 Mbps wireless throughput is not going to waste.
If you still have computers that use 802.11g or 802.11b, don't fret as the access point is backwards compatible with the older wireless standards and can be set so all your computers can connect to the network. The access point will automatically figure out the connection type and work accordingly.
Security Made Easy NETGEAR's Touchless WiFi Security makes it quick and easy to set up network security on a WiFi network by asking for a passphrase from the user. The WN802T supports WiFi Protected Access (WPA2-PSK, WPA-PSK), and 64-bit and 128-bit WEP encryption for 802.11b/g networks. Additionally, you can set security through MAC address authentication, allowing only authorized users onto the network. There is also support for 802.1x RADIUS support with EAP TLS, TTLS, and PEAP.
The NETGEAR WN802T RangeMax Next Wireless-N Access Point Gigabit Edition is backed by a 1-year warranty.
What's in the Box WN802T RangeMax Next Wireless-N Access Point, power adapter, Ethernet cable, stand, wall-mount kit, resource CD, installation guide, warranty/support information card.

When purchasing this product you are not only purchasing a device that will allow you to access the Internet over your own wireless network but you are also assisting in building out the worlds largest wireless access point network. You can configure your FON wireless router to broadcast two SSID's one for your personal network which would be encrypted and then one for the public. The public would be other owners of FON routers around the world. The benefir here is you will have a FON user/pass that you can use at any of the tens of thousands of FON routers around the world. If this continues to grow there will be FON routers almost anywhere youo need.
The FON wireless router is a great concept being implemented with a great product. There are also all sorts of possibilities as far as customizing certain FON routers which you could locate by doing a Google search for FON and Pineapple. :)

VTech IS9181 WiFi Internet Radio with Access to Online Content Review

VTech IS9181 WiFi Internet Radio with Access to Online Content
Average Reviews:

Imagine playing music directly from Japan while eating sushi in your dining room. Or playing Hawaiian music from Hawaii at your next luau. With this WiFi internet radio you can listen to music from all over the world and save your favorites with just a push of the "favorites" button. Then the next time you want to listen you can go directly the the "My Stations" list and choose one of your favorites. I have a classical station in Italy, an oldies station in France, a Celtic station in Ireland and some radio stations in the midwest that I grew up listening to in my favorites list. I also have a French news talk station to keep up on my French. In my video I'll show you how to make some of the internet radio selections and find your own favorite stations.
One of the other options is to listen to music from your computer on this device. The included manual gives simple instructions, with some photos, for setting up your computer so that you can connect via WiFi with this internet radio and play your favorite mp3's, WMA's, Real audio, MP4 and M4A files. There are instructions included for Windows 2000, XP, Vista, Mac OS 10.4 and 10.5. I've listened to music from both my Windows and Mac computers without any problem. And the good news is that it's easy to set up, even for a non geeky person. The internet radio is also simple to set up. When you turn it on for the first time it asks you if you want to set the time, weather setting (your zip code) and wireless settings. It looks for your WiFi network and asks you to enter your password. I used both the little dial on the top of the radio and the remote to make entering it faster.
I mentioned in my video review that you can use the RCA connectors on the back of the unit to connect to other speakers, such as your stereo speakers. The RCA connector cord isn't included with the radio. There is an auxiliary audio cable included to connect another device such as an mp3 player to this radio (audio in). If you wanted to connect earphones, like the type from an mp3 player I think an adapter like this would work 2 x RCA Male / 1 x 3.5mm Stereo Female, Y-Cable, 6 inch
The sound on the video is limited not only by the camera, but by the compression into a video small enough to show here. It sounds so much better in person. But I hope the video gives you an idea of the different menus and features.

Cisco 871 Integrated Services Router - router ( CISCO871-SEC-K9 ) Review

Cisco 871 Integrated Services Router - router ( CISCO871-SEC-K9 )

Do you know what Cisco IOS is?
If not, just stop considering this right now. This isn't for you.
If you're working on a CCNA/CCNP cert, this thing is a great (albeit expensive) way to force you to learn your way around IOS, since there is nothing that will force you to configure your network properly faster than your own home. If you're working on a CCNP, it's got a lot of the features that are hard/impossible to find on used gear, plus you get the latest IOS updates (note that you'll have to hassle Cisco to enable your SmartNet contract since Amazon doesn't have a reseller code to provide). If anything, this product is worth it just for that: the ability to get your own legal IOS images for use in emulators such as GNS3, where you can set up your own virtual lab to play with/break things.
If you want this for your house, it's overkill unless you've got a 40+ megabit WAN connection (don't consider something like an old 1700 series if you've got that kind of speed, it'll just choke once you start maxxing things out).
Note that this product has the advanced image, which has support for OSPF/BGP/EIGRP, VLANs, IDS (not the best performance though, I'd upgrade to an 1800 series if you want decent throughput on the firewall), advanced QoS and IPv6 support.
If you're getting an 871 for certification practice, get this version. If you're an office with 20-30 computers, unless you KNOW that you need the above features, get the standard version and save a few dollars.
If your office has high bandwidth usage, or has more than 40 computers, start looking at higher end versions (and probably a VAR who can guide you better).
