Verizon USB760 3G Prepaid USB Broadband Device Review

Verizon USB760 3G Prepaid USB Broadband Device
Average Reviews:

Okay, I just purchased this device from a store. It's very compact, functions well and easy use. It does have several disadvantages to it as well. The installation process was basic and easy, but it took a lonnng time to install and activate it. Well, 15-20 minutes can be a long time for an eager and loyal customer. It doesn't seem to pick up signals as good as their cell phones do. But I can manage to get 1 or 2 bars in a weak reception area. Also, I believe for the price you pay for this tool should allow you to have unlimited nights and weekends like the prepaid cell phones. I paid a pretty penny for this device, and so far its worth it but they just constantly have to charge you as you continue to use the service. Feels like you're standing on thin ice sometimes. The pre pay time is measured by megabytes of data from the websites that you visit, and the service plan that you pay for. There are multiple pay options, and service plans to choose from. Daily, weekly and monthly. It also gives you an option to upgrade to a contract. I was feeling doubtful about making such a large investment, but as a student I can say that this will come in handy for research when I'm on the move or don't want to take the risk of using public WiFi. The speed is based on the signal that the device picks up, a lot like a cell phone again. Another good feature is you don't need an Internet connection to install, activate or make a payment on your account, as the modem will provide one for you. Overall quality so far 4/5. Another good suggestion would be choosing the $30-$50 service plan if you need a decent amount of time without being disconnected. You don't want to get too greedy and do a lot of downloading either, because it costs and before you know it you'll find yourself making another payment to connect again.

I install networks in Dallas, TX and we have never found an easier more reliable system to use and install than 2Wire. All we had to do was plug it in, install the client software on any machine connected to the phoneline network and then type in a verification code and the settings for your dsl isp, then it was good to go, we have not recieved a single complaint from multiple customers of the homeportal unit being down for a single second. As a networking company we highly recommend it for home or even small business use.

Nothing spectacular about the increases in range or performance. I had to eventually go buy a wireless repeater to reach the far bedroom in our ranch-style home. These antenna additions couldn't do the job themselves.

Manufactured to exacting specifications, it performs as well or better then the Linksys model HGA7S. Lifetime Warranty and Lifetime Technical Support are included at no additional charge. (** actual range and performance increase is dependent on environmental conditions and local interference.) *** Please check with your WiFi manufacturer to determine which model antenna will fit your device - this antenna will ONLY fit RP-SMA connectors - this is NOT compatible with older models of Linksys and Cisco products which use the RP-TNC connector. Actiontec Ethernet over Coax MoCA Adapter - Single Review

Actiontec Ethernet over Coax MoCA Adapter - Single
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I used this device to connection to my FIOS Actiontec router, and without a few comments from people here, you'd never get this to work properly.
First, the "quick instructions" (the only instructions as it turns out) assume that you are using a pair of these only to create an ethernet bridge over your coax. Thus, using this to connect to your FIOS router, the instructions are nonsensical.
Second, without instructions, you'll conclude you put this in between your coax cable and set top box. This will not work, even though this is apparently the way it's supposed to work. You'll get interference on your TV, things won't work, and you'll be ready to throw it in the box and return it.
In reality, you take the cable from the wall jack and get it into a coax splitter. One split goes to the set top box, the other to the device. You connect the ethernet jack to the device, and you're up and working.
If you go to Actiontec's site, they have no instructions how this will work with an Actiontec's FIOS router, despite the fact that this is probably the best use of the device!.
Anyway, once you get it hooked up, as other have said, you don't configure anything. It just works.
So it's a great product, hampered by no instructions for many people, and no help on the web site.

Belkin Wireless Network USB 2.0 Adapter N1 Review

Belkin Wireless Network USB 2.0 Adapter N1
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Since this was my first step into wireless computing, I was a little anxious. I had nothing to worry about. The Belkin adapter comes with a CD that walks you through the driver and hardware installation process.
The USB adapter has a stand with an adequately long cable, or you can plug it straight into a USB port on your desktop or laptop. I would recommed the stand if you have a desktop computer, as you can move the receiver out of the way.
After installation, it connected to my router immediately. You can use Windows to manage the connection or the Belkin utility that comes on the CD. I would recommend the Belkin utility. It has a graphical display of the status and settings that allow you to see other networks that might be in your area.
The only problem I have had is when I leave the computer on and connected to the network then go to bed for the night. When I come back, I have to disable and re-enable the adapter. I don't know if this is an issue with the adapter, the network, the router or Windows. It doesn't matter, as this is only a very minor inconvience.
The thing to keep in mind is that while this is compatiable with the G standard, the box indicates it meets the current DRAFT version of the N standard. It doesn't matter to me even if it ends up not being compatiable with the N standard when it is released, this device works just fine.
I would recommend this to anyone looking for a wireless USB adapter.

SILEX TECHNOLOGY SX-2000WG Hi-Speed USB 802.11g Wireless Device Server Review

SILEX TECHNOLOGY SX-2000WG Hi-Speed USB 802.11g Wireless Device Server
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
INTENT: I bought the Silex SX-2000WG USB Device Server for one reason but with the hope of all the reasons that it describes in the product description. I have the Kodak EasyShare AIO 5500 printer, scanner, fax, copier. I wanted to make it wirelessly available to other computers in the house. The Kodak website listed this device as a recommended accessory with a link to the Silex website. They have since removed this device from their list of accessories for the 5500.
CAVEATES:
* Product Description says it can connect up to 15 devices but it doesn't tell you that there is only one USB plug on the back of it. You have to use a USB hub for more than one device.
* Virtual Link software (required) does NOT run on Mac Snow Leopard at this time. It does run for a time but tends to cause the OS to crash. See "MAC SNOW LEOPARD" for more.
* Only one computer can connect at a time. See "HOW IT WORKS" for more.
* Some devices will require a wired connection for initial setup.
* SX-2000WG firmware updates only via Windows.
* No firmware update of devices can be performed wirelessly.
HOW IT WORKS: In layman's terms, it creates a USB over IP tunnel between the computer and the SX-2000WG. Virtually, it is as if the USB device is directly connected to your computer. A round blue icon appears in the Dock (Mac) or Tray (Windows) that allows you to connect to devices. If another device in the network has the connection, you have to send a request for a connection and the user of the other computer has to agree before their connection is released and your computer is connected. Ergo, device sharing is not like file or print sharing in a corporate network environment, where any computer on the network can access the resources. It does what it says. It provides a wireless connection to USB devices. Think of the USB over IP tunnel as a virtual USB wire through your wireless network, one computer at a time. IMPORTANT NOTE: If your device software requires sensing the device during installation, you will have to direct wired connect to the device during installation. More in SETUP.
CONCLUSION: For my purposes, it doesn't work. As I said above, it does not offer One-To-Many server services. Because the user of one computer ties up the printer, other computer users are not able to print until they request a link and the currently linked user releases the link.
SETUP THE SX-2000WG: The setup is fairly simple although not intuitive. Printed instructions include directions for Windows and Mac platforms. There is a utility on the included CD that has two different programs. One for setting up the Silex in your network and the other to enable your computer to connect to the printer. I used the setup program on my MacMini running OS 10.6.1. It allowed me to connect to the device both wirelessly and by Cat5. The printed instructions are only for wired setup, which is the easiest to follow but requires a wire. If you select the wireless setup, the software does explain the following. The wireless setup process required that I change the IP address of my Mac to match the IP address they included in the SX-2000WG. After connecting to the SX-2000WG, it listed the available wireless networks. I selected my network, provided my networks password and it joined it receiving a DHCP provided IP address from my DSL router. At that point I lost a connection to the SX-2000WG and changed the IP of my Mac to DHCP and rejoined the network. NOTE: There was another wireless setup that allowed all manual settings but it required knowing if your AP was WAP, WEP, etc., and levels of encryption, etc. I was easier to choose the automatic route.
SETUP THE WINDOWS: The software included on the CD was (like the Mac) older software. I have a Vista Home computer and I chose to download current software from the Silex website. The installation is much more intuitive on a Windows computer and completely up to date. The SX-2000WG client software will find the device server on the wireless network and ask you to select it. When the installation is complete, you will have to start it from the Start Programs menu. You can choose options that cause the software to run upon startup, appear in the Tray, automatically connect to devices, etc. IMPORTANT NOTE: If you haven't installed your printer (or other device) software, you will have to wire connect for the first time. The Kodak software also will attempt to sense and update the firmware of the printer while installing. Again, VERY IMPORTANT, you must have a wired USB connection during a firmware update. Yes I had to lug my printer to the PC to install the printer software. Once the printer software was installed, I was able to return the printer to the device server. Like the Mac, I had to open printer properties and find the printer again and select the virtual USB port. Pretty easy.
SETUP THE MAC: Not nearly as intuitive. The software included on the CD is intended for OS up to 10.4. I did try to install it but it bombed. I had to download drivers (for OS 10.5) from the Silex website. The Virtual Link software does work (via Rosetta). When you run the installer, it first asks if you want to install Rosetta. Click yes and it downloads from the Mac website and installs itself. Then you need to restart the SX-2000WG client software installer again. At this point I have moved my printer to the device server. This was because the printer software was already installed. The SX-2000WG client software will find the device server on the wireless network and ask you to select it. When the installation is complete, you may have to run the software from the Applications folder (I don't remember). You can choose options that cause the software to run upon startup, appear in the Dock, automatically connect to devices, etc. You can install the software while being logged in as a basic user because the Mac will ask for an administrator's login during installation, BUT to configure the options after installation will require being logged in as the administrator. Otherwise the options you select will not be saved. Your printer software can no longer see the printer because it doesn't see it on the wired port. You will have to go into System Preferences, select Print & Fax, and click the + icon to add the printer. After that everything works as advertised.
MAC SNOW LEOPARD: Although the Virtual Link software does work when the Mac first boots up, it stops working (print jobs fail) when:
1) the Mac has been on for about an hour,
2) switching the USB connection between the other computers in the house.
Sometimes quitting the Virtual Link software and restarting it helps but not always. Sometime rebooting the Mac is necessary to get the software to work again. WORSE THAN THESE, my Mac occasionally will freeze up, the screen will turn gray from the top of the screen to the bottom, and a message in several languages will tell me that I must reboot the Mac by pressing and holding the power button. This only happened since I started using the Virtual Link software. I sent this information to Silex Tech Support and received the following reply.
"There are several known issues with Snow Leopard and our Virtual Link software, several of which are what you've listed. Unfortunately at this time it is not a supported operating system and our engineers are working hard to come up with software fixes to alleviate the problems you're encountering however at this time I can offer no support for your particular setup."
FIRMWARE: Do not attempt to update the firmware of any device via the device server. Make a wired USB connection to update firmware. Either the firmware will sense the connection is not direct and fail, or it will update the firmware and following the reboot of the device, it will not find the computer and the firmware update will bomb and revert (or worse, completely fail). I have experienced both.

HP DeskJet 6540 Color Inkjet Printer Review

HP DeskJet 6540 Color Inkjet Printer
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
HP Deskjet 6540 [PC Pro]
COMPANY: Hewlett - Packard
DATE: Nov 04
Verdict: Excellent text quality, high speed, expandability and smart styling aren't quiteenough to make this basic printer competitive.

The 6540 is the first unit we've seen from HP's all new Deskjet line-up, a range that's been home to several Recommended and A-List award-winners.
Compared to Canon's Pixma iP3000, the 6540 is a fairly basic unit - there's just a single printer tray, no duplex or CD printing, and no direct-print-from-camera functions, yet it still manages to be almost ?30 more expensive. In terms of build quality though, it's streets ahead of the Canon. The dapper metal shell of the HP is much slicker than the iP3000's silver plastic, and the whole unit suffers from much less rattle. The lid is even geared so that it closes softly rather than slamming shut.
This attention to detail is carried over to the button panel on the left; the keys have a positive clicking action and are smartly lit. The bottom button switches between printing modes (draft, normal and best), though the printer software can override this if you'd prefer. Paper follows the traditional HP U-feed path - not a problem unless you want to print on non-standard or thicker media - and there's the usual slot for feeding envelopes. You'll also notice the inclusion of an upstream USB port on the front - not for connecting a camera, but as an easy way to connect a laptop. We're not convinced it's a must-have feature, but it's there if you want it.
In testing, text documents were near laser-quality, with crisp, black and well-formed characters on default settings, while draft mode only added slight feathering. Print speeds aren't staggering, but with our 25-page text document taking four minutes, six seconds to run through on draft mode, and only a minute more for default, the Deskjet 6540 should be fast enough for all but the most demanding users. For extra speed, we found fast draft mode to yield an impressive 21.4 ppm, with still reasonable results.
Photo printing is slightly more disappointing. Though prints are delivered in a timely fashion - one minute, 54 seconds for a best-quality borderless 6 x 4in photo - colours are a little washed out, and detail is softer than we'd like. Some prints also exhibit a slight embossed effect, with ink appearing to sit on top of the printed surface.
The black cartridge can be swapped for a photo cartridge to turn the printer from a four- to a six-colour device. Results were certainly smoother, and though colours still lacked punch and the detail was a little fudged, photo prints of this quality are uncommon in a sub-?100 printer. An additional grey cartridge is also available for smooth monochrome prints. On the plus side, it means you can choose how much to invest in the machine as a photo device; we just wish there was somewhere to put whichever cartridge you're not using.
It isn't just the ink that's modular. HP offers a range of accessories, including an automatic duplexer, complete with separate small paper sheet feeder. There's also an additional 250-sheet paper input tray. Compared to what the Canon iP3000 is offering, however, these aren't cheap, costing another ?40 each.
If you're looking for a cheap workhorse inkjet, the basic model is a good choice. Its photo printing is respectable for a printer at this price, and when you add to this smart styling, low running costs, and superb build quality, the Deskjet 6540 deserves a PC Pro Recommended accolade. For sheer flexibility and value for money, though, the Canon is a better choice.
By Christopher PhinHope this helps you out.

Intel Wifi Link 5300 Review

Intel Wifi Link 5300
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I bought the Intel WiFi Link 5300 card to replace the stock card in my Dell Mini 9 netbook. The stock card is b/g only and gave me a lot of trouble associating with my home router. The Intel card arrived promptly and included the Intel ProSet 12 software on CD (though I had already downloaded an updated version from Intel's web site). The card and software installed easily.
The Mini 9 has only two antennas (I have a third on order) so I initially connected the two to the 1 and 2 terminals on the Intel card. It worked well and gave me a strong signal in my house, though sometimes the Wireless N connection was weak. I am sure the third antenna will help with that. No problem associating with my access point and the speed is great.
An easy upgrade if you are dissatisfied with the wireless solution in your netbook or notebook that uses a Mini-PCIe connector. Just make sure that the card size is correct - Intel makes one that's even smaller, but the Dell Mini 9 took this size.
Edit: As I predicted, adding the third antenna brought back the N performance. I'm now running Windows 7 on the Mini 9 and it recognized the Intel 5300 and operates it without the need for additional drivers or the Intel ProSet software, though the software does give you more information about how the card is performing. I'm very happy with the 5300.
Edit 9/30/09 - I've been getting lots of questions about where I obtained the third antenna and how it is installed. The antenna I used is made by Tyco and is typically sold in a pack of two. Amazon doesn't sell it, but if you search eBay for "tyco minipci" you will find many for sale. The pack is typically less than $10. Each antenna consists of a large square foil area, backed by adhesive, and a smaller section with an S-shaped foil trace, which is the actual, radiating part of the antenna. The only difference between the two antennae in the pack is the length of the lead, so pick the one that works best for you.
For best results, the antenna would be mounted inside the display lid of your notebook/netbook, positioned so that the S-shaped trace is not blocked by the LCD panel or metal shielding. It's ok for the adhesive-backed section to be blocked as this is just a "ground plane". The antenna should be as high up on the lid as you can manage, though I've heard from some who just let it lay flat inside the base of their PC and they say it "works fine".
The connectors used are standard but are somewhat fragile. Pull them straight up from the card and push straight down, taking care to align the plug correctly. You may find that long-nose pliers help (but don't squeeze too hard.)
Note that the Intel 5100 card is very similar to the 5300 except that it does not support the 3x3 mode with the very highest transfer rates (and uses only two antennae.) You may find that the 5100 is more than adequate for your needs, especially if your wireless router itself doesn't support the 3x3 mode (few do.)
One more point - both the 5100 and 5300 support Intel's "My WiFi" technology which lets you share Internet access with local WiFi devices. This requires the Intel ProSet driver and application which can be downloaded from Intel's web site - read more details on Intel's site.

Easy Setup The WN311T is a PCI adapter and requires a Pentium 3 class PC with an available PCI slot for installation. It supports Windows Vista and is also compatible with Windows XP and 2000 SP4. Setup is as simple as installing the adapter into a PCI slot, connecting the included antenna, and installing the included software. The external antenna is housed in a small elegant white box that is preset for maximum performance and allows for extended range.
Fast, Backwards Compatible, and Secure The NETGEAR WN311T uses the Wireless-N protocol (based on 802.11n draft) for speeds up to 300 Mbps and a range ten times greater than 802.11g adapters. With this much speed and bandwidth, you can easily download large files, place Internet phone calls, download MP3s, stream video, and play online games -- all at the same time, without hiccups, and from farther away. You'll notice the difference immediately.
The WN311T is backwards compatible with 802.11g and 802.11b wireless networks so you'll be able to connect to any hotspot, and it improves network performance up to 50 percent when used with the older 802.11b/g networks.
You can feel secure about your information as the adapter supports Wi-Fi protected access (WPA2-PSK, WPA-PSK) and 64-bit and 128-bit WEP encryption for IEEE 082.11b and IEEE 802.11g. The included software makes managing different WEP passwords a breeze as you can set up different profiles for each location you frequent, saving yourself the trouble of having to type in encryption keys each time you connect to a hotspot you've already used.
The NETGEAR WN311T RangeMax Next Wireless-N PCI Adapter is backed by a 1-year warranty.

Cisco-Linksys Power Over Ethernet Adapter Kit Review

Linksys makes a version of this unit ( WAPPOE12 ) - that is designed for 12 volt systems.

The Linksys Power Over Ethernet Adapter Kit lets you put your access points almost anywhere, by removing the requirement of nearby power outlets. By using the existing Category 5 Ethernet cabling to deliver power to any standard 5 volt access point or other network device, you save the time, hassle, and expense of running AC power to the access points installation location. The best position for a wireless access point is usually on the ceiling, in the center of the area to be covered. Second best would be high on a nearby wall. Unfortunately, theres usually no easily accessible AC power plugs available in these locations. With the Power Over Ethernet Adapter Kit, installing the access point in these preferred spots becomes far less trouble.

2.4GHz Square GRID Parabolic Antenna 24dBi Review

2.4GHz Square GRID Parabolic Antenna 24dBi
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This antenna works beyond my expectations. I went from a 7dBi omni-directional antenna, to this 24dBi directional antenna. I was running very slow and could not always connect. I am about 100 yards from the base router which is indoors. I do not have a clear line of sight to the house due to several large, dense trees. I mounted the antenna on a pole about 10' from the ground.
The instructions for assembling the unit are non-existent. Not even on their own website. I used common sense and a few pictures posted on Amazon. I did guess on a couple of things. It comes in five pieces.
I also purchased the TrendNet 8 meter low loss "N-type to Reverse SMA" cable. The male N-type connects to the short piggy-tail of the antenna. The Reverse SMA connects to the male SMA on the network bridge (D-Link DWL-G820).
Ran multiple speed tests on the direct connection, wireless in the house, and at the access point. The speed at the access point is slower than the direct connection, but faster than the wireless in the house. VERY HAPPY WEB SURFER!!!

Works as well as it says it does! Get strong signals! Even get WiFi signals from routers a couple of blocks away! Wish it was a bit stronger though so you can pick up signals from further away.

Netgear MA521 802.11b Wireless PC Card Review

Netgear MA521 802.11b Wireless PC Card
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I bought this card after having lots of problems with a linksys card. I have a dell laptop and I'm running Windows XP Home. The linksys card had poor signal strength and repeatedly dropped signals, even if seated next to the router. This netgear card is phenomenal. The signal hasn't been dropped yet and I have a signal throughout my house (4000 sq. ft.) and outside! Avoid the linksys card and buy netgear! I can't say enough good things about this card. I love it!
