TRENDnet 300Mbps Dual Band Wireless N Gigabit GREENnet Router TEW-672GR (Black) Review

TRENDnet 300Mbps Dual Band Wireless N Gigabit GREENnet Router TEW-672GR (Black)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
First beware that this product does not do simultaneous dual band (there is no indication that it is only one band at a time until you are deep in the configuration menus). That means you have to pick 2.4 (b, g or n) or 5GHz (a or n). There is supposedly a 673GR coming out in a few months that is proper dual band.
Secondly unlike routers from other manufacturers, this one does not reboot itself every time you change a setting. However it then gets confused if you have any port forwarding setup and starts providing the web admin interface externally, and forgets about any port forwarding. If you have DNS settings in it, then it messes up external DNS queries (source address is internal address not external address). The moral of the story is to always manually reboot after any settings change and don't configure any DNS if you have an internal DNS server.
To get a feeling for functionality, Trendnet do have an emulator of the web admin interface on their web site. A really nice feature is that you can have multiple SSIDs each with different security settings. I used WPA for all my machines on one SSID and then had a second one with WEP limited to my Nintendo DS which doesn't support WPA.
It doesn't get very hot, the gigabit works well, and other than the settings change/reboot and DNS issues it didn't have any issues.

Cisco-Linksys WPC54GX Wireless-G Notebook Adapter with SRX Review

Cisco-Linksys WPC54GX Wireless-G Notebook Adapter with SRX
Average Reviews:

I bought this card along with the WRT54GX router. My house has two stories and plenty of walls. Before I had 3 11a Access Points. Now I only have the WRT54GX. This card works as advertised. I can get 108mbps with almost 100% signal anywhere in my house.
With this card, I can also get a strong signal from my neighbor's wireless network :-)
My only gripe is that if you want to use WPA, you can use the Linksys wireless utility. You must use the windows one. I find the Linksys one better. Minor complaint though.

Whether you're upgrading to a higher-end adapter or setting up your first home network, the Linksys WPC54GX Wireless-G notebook adapter is your ticket to wireless convenience and optimal performance. The SRX-enhanced cardbus adapter gives you the mobility to use your laptop PC anywhere in the house--and, when used in concert with other SRX-enabled networking components, you'll enjoy unparalleled range and speed. The WPC54GX uses Linksys's advanced SRX (Speed and Range eXpansion) technology, which enhances the speed and reach of a Wireless-G (802.11g) network. Relative to standard 802.11g technology, a network using all SRX products can extend network reach up to three times as far and boost wireless network speed by up to eight times. (Actual throughput, speed, and range depend on a host of factors, from building materials to network traffic and distance from your network router.) The device is Wi-Fi-certified and backward compatible with 802.11b (Wireless-B), 802.11g (Wireless-G) and, of course, other Linksys SRX products. The minimum operating system requirement is Windows 2000 or Windows XP. Mixed wireless environments such as networks containing SRX, Wireless-B, and Wireless-G products can operate each client at its own maximum data rate. SRX products maintain their higher speed and range, providing the throughput and quality of service to deliver applications such as VoIP (Internet telephony) and video streaming. SRX is based on MIMO (multiple-in, multiple-out) technology, a key component in the upcoming Wireless-N (802.11n) standard. To improve range and speed, MIMO uses two radios and three antennas on a wireless cardbus adapter or client adapter. What's in the Box A Wireless-G cardbus adapter, a quick-installation guide, a resource CD-ROM, and a user's manual.

Cisco 871 Integrated Services Router - router ( CISCO871-K9 ) Review

Cisco 871 Integrated Services Router - router ( CISCO871-K9 )
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
NOTE: This is review is also in the context of setting up a CCSP/CCNP lab.
Granted in a production environment, the plethora of integrated security features are nice, and if you have fewer than 20 systems on your network, then this little guy is exactly what you need. For a branch-office, its inline security design is ideal. Additonally it supports up to 5VPN tunnels, so admins should be able do whatever tasks are needed. However, if you plan on using this for a DMZ, I'd recommend you reconsider. This only has 128MB of DRAM, and isn't the fastest CPU either, so you -will- have latency on a heavily accessed webserver. If its an extranet for some business partners, I'm sure you can get away it, but this will NOT meet your needs for consumer traffic destined for eCommerce or email relay servers for large corporations.
As far as setting up your own Cisco lab goes, this is by far the cheapest unit to support all the IOS features that must be mastered for CCNP's ISCW, and CCSP's SND and SNRS exams. Specifically:
-CBAC
-APPFW
-DES/3DES IPSec VPN [primarly for site-to-site]
-EZ VPN
-IPS
-WebVPN
-SDM
-AAA
Additionally, it can be configured to interoperate w/ a Micro$oft CA; another plus as far as self-training goes. Not -that- common in Corporate America; however if you plan on deploying smart cards to a highly mobile IT team, it can be useful to know how to do this.
NOTE: For the tests I used IOS 12.4(9), since the exams specificaly as you about attack-drop.sdf, 128.sdf, and 256.sdf. In newer versions of the IOS, they now use v5.x of the signature files, which is completely different format and no longer uses the predefined SDF files.

I bought this same product. I use it with a Netgear 802.11g router. I use all Netgear products to hopefully prevent any conflicts between hardware, but I'm not an networking expert so I'm not sure if that will really prevent any problems. But from my POV this is a safe buy. No problems so far. What I like about this product is that i can place it on a high shelf out of the way of metal objects and other stuff that would potentially interfere with the radio signal, because it's connected by USB.

Hawking HWUG1 Wireless G USB Network Adapter with External SMA Jack Review

Hawking HWUG1 Wireless G USB Network Adapter with External SMA Jack
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This adapter works with Mac OS X, version 10.4, with a driver available from Ralink Technologies. I have tried this on both a Power PC (Powerbook G4) and an Intel machine (Imac). It worked on both.
To get the driver, go to ralinktech DOT com, navigate to support, then to Macintosh, and download the driver labelled RT2571...USB. Install the driver package, restart your machine, and then insert the adapter in a USB port. A "USB wireless utility" will then start. There is no documentation, but the utility is more or less self-explanatory. If you also have a built in airport card, it probably makes sense to turn off airport before using the adapter, just to be safe.
Out of the box, the sensitivity of this adapter seems to be at least as good as that of the built in airport card in my Powerbook. The adapter allows use of an external antenna. I expect that in situations where the built in airport cannot get an adequate signal, this adapter with an additional antenna could do better.

U.S. Robotics USR8022 Wireless Cable/DSL Router (22 Mbps)
Average Reviews:

I have been using this router over a month now and it has not given me one single problem in terms of network connection. The wireless range is far much better than the SMC Barricade 7004AWBR. I initially bought the SMC 7004AWBR because it has been out on the market much longer and most people have given thumbs up to it. But it literally keeps locking up on me when I tried to transfer a 120MB file from one computer to another over the wired connection. The U.S. Robotics, however, never gave me one single problem. The setup was fast and painless (like 10 minutes or so) and everything just work.
The only slight issue I have with this router is that the printer server does not behave as I expected. If I turn the printer off, the admin screen will show "Device Printer" error and sometimes I have to reset the router. Also, the router only comes with only 2 wired LAN connection, whereas most other ones come with either 3 or 4.

LaCie Wireless Space 2 TB Wi-Fi and Gigabit Ethernet Network Attached Storage 301940 Review

LaCie Wireless Space 2 TB Wi-Fi and Gigabit Ethernet Network Attached Storage 301940
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Network attached storage on a wireless router is the concept of LaCie's Wireless Space- good one. However, this device has inherent flaws and shouldn't be on the market- at least until the flaws are addressed. The flaws are too big to ignore. I had no problem setting up the router, other than repeated attempts with the "Network Assitant". This so-called assistant has problems that you can read about elsewhere. I'm a network engineer by trade but the storage device does not unmount volumes and leaves the artifacts within "My Computer" to aggravate and possibly damage my XP operating system. I used a usb port to connect another hard drive to LaCie's wireless network and found the wireless capability to work as advertised. I had looked forward to a simple file transfer system but the device's mandatory software had taken simplicity away. There's nothing simple about the interface, which provides no information about why it malfunctions. I read the PC Magazine review on the product and found that it had the same issues as mine: [...]
I never took the plastic coating off to "enjoy" the stylization look that is supposed to make you happy. Nothing to enjoy- get a brick and paint it black and stare at it- you'll be happy you didn't purchase the LaCie instead. This thing isn't what it's cracked up to be. If someone does come up with a router/ NAS that works easily- without the inherent problems of the LaCie Wireless Space, then I'll buy it. Support doesn't recognize the flaws yet and will suggest you exchange the unit. Don't bother. All of them seem to have the same problems as mine, judging from the reviews. This was my first LaCie purchase because I had been told that the company made good products. Innovative products should be tested before they are offered for sale. Is there another company who makes the nas/ router? I'm interested. I would try the LaCie again too if the firmware updated to where the device was workable.

With capacities of 1 and 2TB, it holds all of your music, movies, and photos, helping you to access and share them on any computer on your home network. You can even stream movies from the Wireless Space to any UPnP/DLNA compatible device, and it works in tandem with iTunes. Now, it's simple to organize your files in a central location and play them on all your devices. TRENDnet Wireless N PC Card TEW-641PC Review

TRENDnet Wireless N PC Card TEW-641PC
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I have a Trendnet Wireless-N Router, it works perfectly and is quicker and more straight-forward to setup than my previous Linksys Wireless Super-G model. When my cable provider switched out my cable modem, my wireless setup "broke" and I couldn't connnect either to the router using a network cable, and had no internet access at all. Prior to my cable company swapping out my old modem (because it wouldn't support a higher download speed (which they were charging me for but I wasn't getting), my wireless connectivity using the Linksys router worked fine but wasn't very smooth. I was completely unable to get my Linksys router to recognize an internet connection using the cable company's RCA modem, so I thought I'd give another router a chance. Went to Fry's and spotted a Trendnet Wireless-N router on sale for $25 so it came with me back home.
At first, I was unable to get it to talk to my modem either, and I inadvertently reconfigured it with a new password, which it then refused to recognize. A quick call to Trendnet's tech support quickly straighten me out on how to reset the router back to the factory defaults, and after going through the Trendnet user's manual, instead of using the quick setup guide, it became apparent to me the problem was the default subnet settting was at 255.255.255.0 while my cable provider had a different subnet value. No problem in changing the subnet setting in the router software to the correct value, and I had internet connectivity, both wired and wireless. I was thrilled with the Trendnet router, and it was much faster even using my built-in Wireless-G card in my laptop than before when I was using the Linksys (which refused to accept a new subnet value when I tried to modify the settings).
So, now I was quite curious to get a wireless-N adapter for my laptop to bump up my overall speed. After reading a ton of reviews of usb and pcmcia adapters from various manufacturers, I thought what the heck I'll try a Trendnet card even though some of the other reviews I found weren't that complimentary. So bought one for $26 including shipping through an Amazon seller, and in 2 days I had the card. Followed the instructions, installed the software, plugged in the card, and with a very small amount of configuration it worked, but at a transfer rate no faster than Wireless-G (54kbps). I checked my router settings and it was set to a mixed signal (to accept WirelessB/G/N connections). I changed the value to only N connections, and the connection speed jumped up from 54kbps to 64kbps. This was with the laptop within 2-3 feet of the router. I then carried my laptop across the house, about 25 feet into another room (and didn't turn it off). Plugged the laptop back into an AC-powered outlet, and tried logging onto CNN. Took about 20 seconds and the connection worked, and then I checked the speed. The connection was "good" but the speed had dropped down to 6kbps. Whoah...!! That was bad, very bad.
Moved the laptop back to within a few feet of the router, back to 64kbps. Now, the card and Wireless-N is supposed to support up to 300kbps, and here I was about 25 feet away getting 6kbps. That was that, shut down the laptop, pulled the pcmcia card, put it back in it's box, and requested an RMA for a return. I hope this discourse helps you decide NOT to buy this card.
However, Trendnet does have my total recommendation for their low-cost wireless-N router, it's much better than the Linksys Wireless Super-G router I had previously...

I've used two SX41s for over three years on DSL and they are rock solid providing that I don't violate the cardinal rules of operation. The VPN tunnels are easy to set up if you follow the guidelines. First of all you must use a stable firmware. 1.45.7 is the most stable. The latest 1.52.9 is okay, but not as stable. Also you must NEVER set any of the Web Filters to deny or you will have reboots. Generally it is as simple as that.
There are also rules for flashing that must be observed. It doesn't matter whether you use a ver 1 firmware on a ver 2 router or visa versa. Thinking there is a difference is nonsense. What DOES matter is that the router MUST be reset to factory defaults (30 secs on the reset button will do this) before a flash or you risk bricking the router. When flashing with the Web page flashing tool, use IE or you will risk bricking the router. Use the TFTP utility for the SX41 obtainable from Linksys if you wish to use a Mozilla-based browser to flash. After you flash, you should reset once again to factory defaults. There are residual register settings carried over from the previous firmware versions that can cause reboots and other malfunctions.
Even the best flashing procedures can fail, but there are procedures for recovering from a bad flash at DSLReports.com. The recovery rate is probably better than 90% using those techniques. Guidelines for setting tunnels up are also posted there as well as access to the 1.45.7 stable firmware.
Successful operation of the SX41 requires modest intelligence, some networking experience, and following the operating rules. Linksys support hasn't a clue as to what those rules are so don't even bother with them unless you are trying for an RMA for a defective unit. Basically the router has gotten a bad rap from people who don't know how to operate it. Unfortunately they can't learn how to do that from the minimalist manual or from the so-called tech support personnel. Ask for operation help in the Linksys forum on the above mentioned web site if you are struggling with this router.
