Before I got these antenna, the media center extender would drop its network connection frequently enough to be quite annoying. With these antennas replacing the ones on the extender, I have not had another dropped connection. Still get slowdowns in video every so often, though not enough to really bother me.

I use all Netgear products to hopefully prevent any conflicts between hardware, but I'm not an networking expert so I'm not sure if that will really prevent any problems. But from my POV this is a safe buy. No problems so far. What I like about this product is that i can place it on a high shelf out of the way of metal objects and other stuff that would potentially interfere with the radio signal, because it's connected by USB.

(More customer reviews)This item is advertised to work on Windows/Mac/Linux. I'm a linux user, and this device is a pain in the butt. You plug it in and nothing works out of the box. lsusb doesn't show you what chipset is working inside: I had physically open the device to find out. It's a realtek RTL8188CUS. There is no support for this chipset in the mainline kernel (yet?). However, you can download the sourcecode for the kernel module from realtek.com. Doing so gives you a zip file that claims to support the 8188CUS, but compilations yield only a kernel module for the 8192CU chipset. Loading this module enables the detection of the device, but once you try to connect to a network, the whole system crashes. EPIC FAIL.
If I wanted this kind of user experience, I'd switch back to windows. For now, this isn't even worth the return postage as it was so cheap.

(More customer reviews)I had ordered a mini wireless USB adapter for 33 dollars thinking it was cheaper than the most.It did not work, it detected 2 connections and the quality of signal was bad.I was not able to go online with that adapter.I returned it and looked for a cheaper but more useful alternative.I found this after reading about Alfa antenna adapters.Alfas were more expensive (30-40 dollars) and I did not want to spend that much because I did not want to have a costly non-functioning adapter.I wanted to give this a chance instead since it was 12.99.If it did not work, it was no big deal.
WOW! It does work great.While the previous adapter detected only 2 networks, this detects 5-6 networks and the signal quality is good (60-80%.It stays connected at a decent speed.
I highly recommend this adapter for people who need more and reliable reception at a value price.
The only possible disadvantage of this adapter is its antenna protrusion.If you have preschoolers like I do, they might bump into it and break it.Apparently you can not have it all (perfect reception+ultra-compact design+good price) at once.
So far I am very happy with my purchase. Thanks to Amazon (for free super saver shipping) and the vendor.

(More customer reviews)I purchased two of these for my wife and myself because we like to sit out back on nicer evenings and wear down our laptop batteries together.
I have installed the drivers on XP, Vista, Windows 7 and tonight on Ubuntu 10.10. In order of ease-of-install I go with Win7, Vista, Ubuntu and XP. Win7 and Vista both installed the drivers without the disk, Ubuntu seemed trickier but not really. I plugged it in, ran update manager and rebooted (Ubuntu does a full reboot on my netbook in under a minute and a half.) XP was a nightmare of picking through the mis-labeled folders on the disk, giving up and finding the drivers online.
As far as performance is concerned, I saw little signal boost on XP (went from 1 bar without to 2 bars with.) Win7 and Vista both showed a steady two bar increase (1 without to 3 with) but the most impressive was Ubuntu. On Ubuntu I went from barely 1 bar without the dongle to full signal with a rare fluctuation down to 3 bars if someone stands directly in the signal path.
I've read the other reviews and they seem pretty mixed but my opinion is that this is hands-down the best purchase under $20 I've ever made.
I'm writing this review from my back patio with my Ubuntu powered Ideapad s10-3t and wireless dongle.
"A computer is like an air conditioner, it works great until you open Windows."
