Cisco-Linksys WPC55AG Dual-Band Wireless A+G Notebook Adapter Review

(More customer reviews)I have a Linksys WRT54G wireless G router and I have tried it with 2 card offerings from Linksys - the WPC54G (for 802.11 b/g) and the WPC55AG (for 802.11 a/b/g). I can honestly say that with my router (w/ latest firmware version 1.02.1) I have had very strong streaming connection w/ the WPC54G card, not so with the WPC55AG. Using the a/b/g WPC55AG, the connection was significantly weaker and I would lose connection at the same distance. My desk is about 20 paces away from the router as the crow flies, (ie: other end of the 2 bedroom condo). Here is a pic of the 2 cards side by side: http://....
In conclusion, I would NOT recommend the linksys WPC55AG card if you DO NOT have to connect to a 802.11a wireless network.
I have not had to connect to a 802.11a wireless network so I cannot comment on this card's connection ability in a 5GHz network. Secondly, wireless 802.11a networks are quite rare. If you only have a Linksys WRT54G, then stick with the WPC54G card.
I purchased the Linksys WPC54G laptop card and WRT54G wireless 4 port router on Amazon for $...(UPS ground shipping included).
I purchased the Linksys WPC55AG laptop card for $...(SHIPPING included) on ....com. Their price unfortunately has since gone up ($...), but I was happy w/ their service. I received the product 5 days later via FEDEX.
Look up WPC55AG on http://www.....com for the best deal. Enter your ZIP to see the bottom line price including shipping.
One last tidbit, you could always go to Best Buy and purchase both cards to test them out for yourself. You are allowed to return the product withing 14 days. CompUSA will also probably have the product but imposes a restocking fee :(

D-Link Wireless 108AG Gaming Adapter Review

(More customer reviews)If your router is not by D-Link, and particularly if you use WPA encryption with that router, do not purchase the DGL-3420. I have tested it with both the Linksys WRT54G and the SMC 2804WMBP-G, and WPA fails with both of them. D-Link technical support, in fact, has confirmed that THEY know the adapter doesn't work using WPA with the WRT54G.
Besides, for significantly less money you can get a wireless bridge with a lot more functionality. After this product failed for me, I purchased the Netgear WGPS606, which can connect FOUR items (X-Box, computer, whatever) to your wireless network AND two wireless print servers, all for $20 less (on Amazon).

As my kids would say, it is so easy even Dad could do it. Simply put the disc in the cd tray and follow the instructions. Couldn't be easier. It takes you step by step and lets you know when to plug in the adapter. The results are pretty much instantaneous. You are on line. I found it even made my older computer work faster. Great product great price.

(More customer reviews)I would actually rate it closer to 4.5 stars. The range is comparable to the Linksys WRT54G v5 that it replaced so don't be discouraged by the single antenna on the USR5461.
The router software interface is simple and pretty straight forward. I don't think the options are laid out as nicely as with Linksys and D-Link, but it still works well. The HTML code is a bit sloppy because it doesn't render as well in Firefox as it does in Internet Explorer. The interface is still usable with FF though.
The print server is VERY easy to setup and works perfectly with our Brother HL-1440 laser printer. Once the router detects the printer, it creates a network printer address (which you get by logging in), which you just enter in the Add Printer Wizard in Windows. You'll need to install drivers for your printer, but no drivers or special configuration is needed to connect to the print server.
Transferring files wirelessly using normal 54mbps mode is decently fast. I transferred about 700MB of files wirelessly in about 10 minutes from a computer downstairs to my laptop upstairs. Both computers use 11g wireless cards made by different companies: Shuttle PN18 and D-Link DWL-G650.
The DHCP server doesn't let me manually associate IP addresses to MAC addresses, but that isn't a big issue. My old D-Link 713p let me do that, which made port forwarding a lot easier.
My biggest complaint is that Bittorrent will slow http traffic to a crawl when it's connecting to peers and seeds. This doesn't happen all the time, and once the torrent is going, everything works smoothly and quickly.
Also, the firmware is open source, but the router itself does not have enough memory to hold any of the current opensource firmwares like OpenWRT or DD-WRT. The processor that the router uses is supposed to be compatible though. Maybe someone will come up with something once the router becomes more popular.

I thought this update fixed problems with NAT rules. It did fix the bug where inbound NAT rules were damaged on restart, but now newly created outbound NAT rules don't work! Packets go from LAN to WAN but the responses are lost without even triggering dropped packet logging. Netgear online support doesn't seem to have the technical knowledge to investigate.
Stay away from this router. You will never get it working.Earlier reviews follow.

This router has suffered numerous firmware bugs that prevent it from working securely and reliably. Tech support's answer is always to hard-reset and reprogram manually. Reprogramming using a backup file only restores whatever corruption you're trying to get rid of. This is a BUSINESS class router! Manually reprogramming takes at least an hour. After fixing the bug that gave admin privileges to Telnet without a password, I've picked up a bug where an important NAT rule vanishes on each reboot. I've been told by Netgear Support to install the beta firmware update (and then manually reprogram AGIAN) but they never sent it to me and they stopped responding to the trouble ticket. Netgear has a forum that they recommend for fast support but it's staffed by illiterates. I can't tell what they're trying to say.
There's still no VPN client software for 64 bit systems.

Firmware 3.0.5-25 may grant administrative access to everybody on the LAN through Telnet. If this happens, you can't set a password and you can't turn the feature off. The ONLY solution is to reset to factory defaults and re-configure from scratch. If Amazon let me, I'd drop to no stars until this is fixed.

This little box is awesome. This is for anyone who has multiple internet connections, multiple static IP addresses, multiple home servers, or any other problem that a "home router" can't handle. Gigabit ports and the custom NAT rules allow a home server, a desktop computer, and a NAS can talk to each other at raw Gigabit speed.
The best feature isn't obvious until you're half way through the initial configuration - it's actually easy to set up. The web GUI is clear, full of help, responsive, and it tells you about potential conflicts. The owner's guide is all about how to create your network. It doesn't waste your time with Windows screenshots. Ping, traceroute, DNS, and packet sniffing tools are built-in for troubleshooting mistakes without yanking wires.
A test of NAT showed about 52Mbps, which isn't too bad for a small box. The only bug I've seen so far is that routing might not work immediately after setting up a custom NAT rule.

(More customer reviews)The reality of WiFi is that just about everyone I know is not getting as solid a signal as they'd like. I've been frustrated by dead spots in the house, and I'm sure we've all done strange "rain dances" with our notebooks, cables, antennas, etc. to try to improve the signal.
However, my WiFi network did not seem as zippy as my Ethernet when using our cable modem, even though the bandwidth of both networks dwarfs the cable modem. Well, instantly after installing the booster, I got noticeably better response in a room where the signal used to be so weak that Linksys' own utility would show no signal strength (even though I could surf from there).
The WSB24 is trivial to install (180 seconds and that was because I didn't know you had to push the cable onto the connector pretty firmly). If you were a LinkSys pioneer and bought the early access points, you owe it to yourself to upgrade with this booster.
