Sony VAIO Wireless LAN PC Card Review

Sony VAIO Wireless LAN PC Card
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I used many different wireless LAN card (Linksys, SMC, and Lucent), and finally I can said this is the best for Sony. First of all, it fully supports Windows XP. The installation is very easy and clear, and it may only takes you less than a minute at your currently wireless network environment. The range and connection quality are very good, and I get pretty stable and good connection even I go over 150 feet in my house at the other floors. For Advance user, you can use this card at different wireless network environment by one click, because the card can support and can be able record multiple access points setting (up to 8). So, it will be easy for you to switch backward and forward from your working wireless environment to your home wireless environment, or even at your friend's houses without any further setup at each time by different network environment needs. By few words to describe this card, I would say "Easy, Simple, Stable, Beautiful, and Wonderful".

Innoband HomePlug AV Wireless N Starter Kit Review

Innoband HomePlug AV Wireless N Starter Kit
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The Good: Bridges Ethernet devices and extends Wi-Fi coverage using *existing power lines*. Performance is exceptional.
The Bad: Setup is less than straightforward. Documentation is limited.
The Ugly: The 210P-I1 access point's antenna is poorly designed and fragile.
I purchased this product because Wi-Fi reception in my kitchen (which has a lot of stainless steel cabinets and is far away from our Linksys WRT54G Wireless-G Router) is poor.
Before setting up the Innoband HomePlug Kit, laptop reception in the kitchen was bad but tolerable. However, a Logitech Squeezebox Duet Wi-Fi Internet Radio we purchased recently was unusable. We had to walk out of the kitchen to use the Squeezebox Controller, and the Receiver in the kitchen simply couldn't keep up with the streaming audio. Synching with our older Squeezebox was impossible because both players would cut out for seconds at a time.
When I purchased the HomePlug Kit, I was worried that ethernet over power lines simply wouldn't work or would perform so poorly that it wouldn't be useful. I was also concerned that the 210P-I1 access point would be annoying to configure or incompatible with my 802.11g devices. Finally, I was taking a chance by buying an unreviewed product from a company that I didn't recognize.
But the HomePlug Kit does just what it is advertised to do. Namely, it bridges Ethernet devices and extends wireless coverage over existing power lines. And it does so with exceptional performance--better, it feels like, than my existing wireless network. In fact, after the 210P-I1 access point had been running for a few minutes, all 5 of the devices that had been using my router's Wi-Fi selected the 210P-I1--automatically.
My one major complaint about the HomePlug Kit is the 210P-I1 access point's fragile antenna, which I managed to snap within moments of removing the device from its packaging. The break is only cosmetic (the wiring is intact even though its housing was comepletely separated from the unit) so I decided to use some super glue rather than go through the hassle of a return. But I hope Innoband will address this design flaw in future revisions of the product.
My second, lesser complaint is that although Innoband effectively promises a plug-and-play configuration, the experience is in truth less straightforward. The main issue I found is that the 210P-I1 access point was not configured to work with my home network (it was using a different subnet and wireless network). Which isn't really that surprising, but I had to exercise some trial-and-error in order to get everything configured as desired.
In order to integrate the 210P-I1 with my home network, I had to:
1. Connect my laptop via the supplied Ethernet cable to the 210P-I1.
2. Configure my laptop for the same subnet as the 210P-I1:
IP Address: 192.168.1.1
Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
Gateway: 192.168.1.210
3. Connect a web browser to http://192.168.1.210.
4. Reconfigure the 210P-I1 with an IP address on my home network.
A. Click "Lan Setting" [sic]
B. Enter an IP address from my home network (e.g., 192.168.0.NNN for addresses ranging from 192.168.0.0 to 192.168.0.255)*
C. Click "Apply"
* Your specific configuration may vary.
5. Reconfigure my laptop for my home network's subnet. Generally this just means using DHCP, but you can use a static configuration like:
IP Address: 192.168.0.NNN
Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
Gateway: 192.168.0.XXX
6. Connect a web browser to http://192.168.0.NNN (i.e., the IP address configured in step #4).
7. Reconfigure the 210P-I1's SSID to match my router's existing SSID.
A. Click "Wireless Settings"
B. Change "Network Name(SSID)" [sic] from "innoband" to "mywifi".
C. Click "Apply"
8. Ensure that my router's wireless channel and the 210P-I1's do *not* overlap.
A. Channels 1, 6, and 11 do not overlap
B. The 210P-I1 access point is already configured to use channel 6
C. I reconfigured my router to use channel 11
9. Ensure that my router uses the same encryption and secret as the 210P-I1.
A. Click "Wireless Settings"
B. Click "Security"
C. Choose the "Security Mode" (WEP or WAP) that matches my router's
D. Enter the WEP key or WAP pass phrase that matches my router's
E. Click "Apply"
Admittedly that's a lot of configuration (and the documentation doesn't cover it adequately), but in the end the Innoband HomePlug Kit does exactly what I need it to do. Which is more than I can say for a lot of products I come across.
I plan on ordering another 200P-I1 (the wired device) to bridge more A/V devices like the Samsung BD-P1600 1080p Blu-ray Disc Player.
p.s., Innoband included a black knit watch cap with the HomePlug Kit they sent me. This was a nice gesture (and not a bad cap either).

Compliant with the latest HomePlug AV standards, which support data speeds of up to 200Mbps, the HomePlug AV Wireless N Starter Kit can be used to bridge Ethernet devices such as modems, routers, PCs, set-top-boxes, and game consoles, allowing users to share network access via existing in-home power cabling. I received my adapter before the wireless router (also EnGenius) and setup an ad hoc connection. Windows 7 found the adapter right after I connected it to a usb port. It is a small but stylish adapter. I like everything about it. After that it was just a matter of using Windows 7 Network and Sharing Center to setup the connection.
Of course, once the router arrived, it was a snap to setup the network, since Windows 7 had no problems finding the adapter and router. To setup a network using a router, plug in the wireless adapter and then follow the instructions for setting up the router. Easy installation and use, and low price makes each EnGenius product an excellent value.

If you are a newbie to wireless internet, the last thing you need is an adapter that is hard to install or understand. This product is neither. As my kids would say, it is so easy even Dad could do it. Simply put the disc in the cd tray and follow the instructions. Couldn't be easier. It takes you step by step and lets you know when to plug in the adapter. The results are pretty much instantaneous. You are on line. I found it even made my older computer work faster. Great product great price.

Belkin Wireless G Desktop Card F5D7000 - Network adapter - PCI - 802.11b, 802.11g
Average Reviews:

I got the wireless card for my PC and installed it with minor difficulty. It worked just "OK" for 8 months or so. Within that time period I had to troubleshoot with Belkin technical support about 4 times. They were nice, maybe a bit condescending. The fact is that I do not have a second job maintaining my computer and I expect the support to be supportive without making me feel like a dummy. But, those are minor annoyances at best.
Anyway, after the 8 months or so my computer unexpectedly froze and I could not get on my network, yet the wireless networks of my neighbors COULD be found. Huh? I called Belkin and (to their credit) they did not pretend to not know what the problem was. With little hesitation they said the card was defective. I was transferred three times and told they would replace it at no cost. While at this point I did not want any more Belkin products, since they were replacing it at no cost to me...what did I have to lose?
OK, they asked for a credit card number so that if I didn't return my defective card in 20 days they would charge my card $43 and change. That seemed fair. We did this arrangement on a Wednesday afternoon. However, less than two hours later I was looking at my records and saw they already charged me for the card! I called back and said I did not understand...Blekin told me one thing and did another...major pet peeve of mine! I asked them to stop the order and just credit my card. No one asked me WHY, but I didn't care anymore. Just credit me. I was placed on hold while they "undid" the order placed two hours earlier. Grrrrrr.
The customer service person said that he undid the order, but they would have to call me back this afternoon to confirm my cancellation...ISN'T THAT WHAT WE WERE DOING NOW???? Guess who didn't get a call?
I received an e-mail the next day about how to return my defective card after I receive the new one. I e-mailed back that I had cancelled and did and just wanted my credit. No one responded. I e-mailed again on Saturday. No word again.
On Monday I got an e-mail saying that the card already shipped and that there was nothing they could do! I tried to reach this particular customer service person and ...gasp...she was not at her desk! I sent her an e-mail telling her the entire situation and that I would not buy Belkin EVER again.
Never heard back on that. By the way, I was frustrated but not venting in my e-mail. I had legitimate gripes!
I received the card but left it in the box...went and added my defective card and copies of my previous e-mails and mailed it to Belkin...they rec'd it two weeks ago and have yet to credit me. I called cust service a few days ago and gave them my return authorization number, my case number, and the tracking number to prove the cards were rec'd by Belkin. The cust service person even complimented me on my having all the info. AUGH! He said he would send my request to be credited to the return dept and since I had all the info I should see a credit in a couple of days.
No such luck. This isn't about $43. This is about a company that promises one thing and then hangs up the phone and does another. I still have the router, but will be donating that soon. I *did* ask for a company credit in lieu of the card, and that would have been fine, but then it is not transferrable and I am not planning on going anywhere near Belkin products again. I had hoped to donate the credit with the router and maybe someone in need would have better luck.
Forget about it. STAY AWAY. I so wish I had spent a few bucks more for a better company and product. If I could give Belkin zero stars, I would.

Actiontec Wireless USB Network Adapter (Black) Review

Actiontec Wireless USB Network Adapter (Black)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I got this adapter for my older laptop that does not have a built in "N" card. It was easy to install with Vista OS, real plug and play. Once installed, it was able to see almost all networks in my area, and connected easily to my network. I moved my laptop around the house, out to the backyard, no problems. All in all, it is a nice addition to older machines.
Pros: Driver is already stored on the adapter and installs automatically when you plug it in.
Quick and easy installation, plug it in, and in a few munities you're done.
Received signal thru walls, and far from the modem.
Speed is about average both up and down stream.
Cons: Too large and unsuitable for laptops, will block the adjacent USB port unless you use the USB extension cable.
Will not work with Mac.
As other reviewers noted, the package is hard to open, environmentally unfriendly, and too large. I wish they packed it in a small box.

This product works flawlessly straight out of the box. The installation was a snap. It works best with the small usb extension provided. I use it with an old Dell laptop to connect it to my new D-Link615 router. It connects my network between two buidings separated by a small area of tropical rain forest, a distance of more than three hundred feet, and through three concrete walls.I like the AES encryption for the enhanced security. This has got to be the best product for the price. I was really impressed with the performance..

D-Link DIR-628 RangeBooster N Dual Band Router Review

D-Link DIR-628 RangeBooster N Dual Band Router
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I am in the business of IT and telecom.
I have used some other high end WiFi AP and routers in my days.
This DLink 628, even though just a consumer unit, has blurred the line between professional and consumer use wifi routers.
The setup is a breeze. I was up and running (using Mac), without the set up CD, in less than 3 min.
First on speed, it is fast. Side by side testing with the Dlink DIR655, they are both the same speed with all of the config being the same.
The QoS feature is wonderful, you can prioritize by IP to many tiers. So now when my kids are playing games with voice and video, my html browsing can have priority over them. (Since in routing, the voice and video gets priority in getting transferred.)
All in all, this is a wonderful unit for the price (only $75 now on Amazon).
I would buy this one over the DIR 655 since I really don't see any speed improvement on the 655 but almost twice the price.
I give it 5 stars and highly recommend it as a good buy.

Belkin Wireless Play Router (F7D4302) Review

Belkin Wireless Play Router (F7D4302)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Bought at Costco as it was the only router for sale, and it has a USB port which means network printing OR file sharing without having a server turned on. My first complaint is that the "Easy Setup" diagram on the box clearly shows two USB ports on the back of the device while the spec. list says that it only has one. Two would make sense, since the router can act as a print server or a media server using an external hard drive. I can see that doing both at the same time would overload this router's abilities, as connecting an external hard drive and then trying to stream DVD quality video over the WIRED connection is sluggish and will cause VLC or Windows Media Player to hang. Forget about playing ripped DVDs from the hard drive if they have a menu. The menu will load and you will do nothing but wait once you click "Play Movie." Hell, even browsing files on the external HD will cause explorer to lock up.
If I stream a video from a computer on the network (over the wi-fi) as opposed to the external HD hooked up to the router, everything works as normal (when everything's working -- see below), throughout my apartment, despite the lack of signal bars (I always had full bars everywhere with my Linksys).
From my review thus far, one would assume that my only beef is with the USB functionality. However, you would be wrong. The main reason I bought this router is because I despise power cycling. I cannot stand pulling a plug in the back of a router, and then wasting a half minute of my time daydreaming of unicorns or whatever, and then fumbling with the plug and some unseen port. Do you miss the 90's when you would see pictures load line by line or do the slowly enhancing pixel routine? Remember server timeouts with their cute "Server not found" errors and their "Try again" buttons that never worked? Remember seeing red "X's" instead of pictures? Well, if you want to feel like a kid with a 28.8 modem again, then this is the router for you!!! You'll be nostalgically transported 15 years back in time approximately every day until you realize the Internet sucked in the 90's and so you get up, unplug the router, and continue your unicorn daydream where it left off. I'm currently at the part where we take a nap in the meadow together.
Oh yea, you'll have to power cycle so often, they even added a "feature" to do this automatically for you called "self healing" where you lose Internet completely at some specified time once a week. So I guess you only have to power cycle six times a week. THANKS BELKIN!!!

NETGEAR Wireless-N 150 USB Adapter WNA1100 Review

NETGEAR Wireless-N 150 USB Adapter WNA1100
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Doesn't even deserve one star, but I need to set something. On two different computers, one with Windows XP and and the other with Windows 7, the device would only work when the software was first installed, before the system was rebooted. After reboot, the device would NOT reconnect. Downloading the latest software didn't fix the problem, it only changed the failure. On Windows 7, the device would eventually reconnect if I disabled and re-enabled the device and otherwise fiddled with the networking stack in some indeterminate way. On XP, the device would reconnect, BUT, the system was unusable. A service named "WifiSvc.exe" would fail with a dialog reporting the failure. After closing the dialog, the service would be restarted and would fail again in one or two minutes, resulting in the dialog reappearing. This constantly reappearing failure dialog and intermittent network service rendered the system unusable.

Belkin Wireless N+ 802.11n USB Adapter (Black) Review

Belkin Wireless N+ 802.11n USB Adapter (Black)
Average Reviews:

I purchased this product in the hopes of using it for internet access to a desktop located in another section of my home than that of my router. The issues I have with the product are these: 1) connectivity was worse than that of netbooks/laptops in the same location, 2) no Windows 7 driver was supplied - had to download to a CD on the internet on another PC and then move to the remote PC - Catch 22, as I cound not get the driver w/o internet connectivity, and I cound not get the connectivity without the driver. If you intend this for a site with strong network signal - and do not need the Windows 7 driver, it would work in a satisfactory fashion - but not any better.

Been downloading average 250-300GB worth of contents with many overnight runs, never failed, never disconnected once. Work perfectly with my Buffalo G/MIMO router, even though this is an N adapter. In far places where other adapters get 2-bar signal only, this one gets 4. Planning to buy more.

Medialink - Wireless N USB Adapter - 802.11n - 150Mbps - 2.4ghz - Windows 2000 / XP / Vista 64-Bit /128-Bit Windows 7 Compatible Review

I own a computer that utilizes Windows Vista (64 bit) and was not having success installing wireless adapters from two reputable companies. At this point I was ready to cut open walls and run the ethernet cable to my computer. I mentioned the problem to my computer geek cousin and he told me to purchase a medialink wireless adapter as it supports Windows Vista 32 and 64. So I googled the wireless adapter and found that Amazon carried it. So I went to Amazon.com and there it was in the medialink adapter's product information, compatible with Vista 32 and 64. At $29.99 ( $10.00 cheaper then the previous two adapters), I thought it was worth the risk. I recieved it two days later and proceeded to install the medialink wireless G USB adapter and again no success. At this point I'm ready to punch a hole in the wall out of frustration. I finally decided to contact Mediabridge to convey my dissatisfaction. The phone was picked up after one ring and a customer service person rerouted me to technical support. Technical support picked up after one ring and I'm thinking to myself, this is amazing, no machine telling me to push buttons. After running several test on my computer with technical support, I still was not wireless. The tech support person, who was professional and knowledgable, recommended trying their wireless-N USB adapter. He said Mediabridge will ship it out right away at no cost. I received the wireless-N adapter the following day (again, amazing). I install it and within five minutes I was wireless. The installation was a snap. I'm on the internet several hours a day and I haven't had any problems at all. I forget sometimes that I'm wireless. At the price Mediabridge is charging for their wireless adapters, this is a steal. Kudos to Mediabridge for backing their products and lowering my blood pressure. I recommend this product to anyone who wants a quality wireless adapter at a great price.

Cisco-Linksys E1000 Wireless-N Router Review

Cisco-Linksys E1000 Wireless-N Router
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The E1000 is an entry level wireless N router with a 100Mb switch. This router runs 802.11n in the 2.4GHz frequency (~130Mbs) to be backward compatible with 802.11b/g. The downside is that if you have a mixed wireless client environment at home (Wii/Blackberry) - 802.11b/g, newer laptop with 802.11n) you will only ever get a max of 802.11g speeds. If you have any 802.11b only clients, your performance could be much less. If you have a mixed environment and really think you need 802.11n speeds then you should be looking at the E3000. This device has two separate radios (2.4GHz and 5GHz). You would then dedicate the 5GHz to your 802.11n and use the 2.4GHz for 802.11b/g connections. You also get a gigabit capable switch vs. 100Mb). Running 802.11n in the 2.4GHz frequency in theory is 130Mb/s and in the 5GHz frequency that is pushed to 300Mb/s. Keep in mind, that you will never get the advertised speeds, not even on b/g as the wireless protocol has a very large overhead. You are lucky if you actually see half of that speed. The 2.4GHz frequency does travel farther than 5GHz but with speed tradeoffs. 2.4GHz is also more susceptible to interference from the microwave, baby monitor, or anything else that runs in the 2.4GHz frequency.
I know that was long, but the point is to understand what you have at home for wireless clients and then determine what product you need to buy. I think most people see the E1000 at a lot cheaper price and don't really understand what they are getting.
Now for my review: I have a mixed environment and am just happy with the 802.11g like performance. The speeds are not an issue for streaming HD content from my DireTV DVR to laptops over wireless or streaming video/music throughout my house. I have the device set up in the basement and get adequate coverage throughout my two story home. It even sneaks out to my garage (on the opposite end of the house from the E1000) and the patio. Having much experience with networking equipment, I choose to bypass the "easy setup" and manually configure the device and the clients. I think setup problems from a client perspective have more to do with Windows Vista and Windows 7 security than the E1000. My Wii and Blackberry connected quickly and easily while the Vista and Win7 machines took a couple of tries to connect. Overall, a good product for its intended purpose.
