Prosafe Dual Band Wirelss-n Access Point Review

Prosafe Dual Band Wirelss-n Access Point
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I use this AP along with a NetGear dual band WNDR3700 Router, a Netgear GS116NA Giga Switch switch and a Netgear WNHDE111 5 GHz AP. I have ethernet cables from each AP back to the switch.
When you open the box you'll find the build quality of this AP to be very impressive. You'll get a CD that has an excellent manual which describes how to set up the unit. You can also go to the Netgear website and download the manual to see what you will be getting into. Not so bad but you should really have some idea of wireless settings since you will be able to select and adjust them with the WNDAP350. The manual is very helpful and if you just want to set up WPA2-PSK using a PassPhrase [network key] on both bands you'll have no problems as you will leave almost all settings on their default.
When the device arrives you don't immediately put in on your network. First you'll hook up the WNDAP350 to a laptop or desktop computer via an ethernet cable [provided in the box]. This removes the computer from the network and allows it to communicate with the WNDAP350. Why, well the WNDAP350 comes with a default IP of 192.168.0.237 so you set your adapter to have a static IP of 192.168.0.210. [subnet 255.255.255.0]. All of this is covered in the manual. You then go to your browser and type in [...] and this opens the excellent interface for the WNDAP350. Then you set the IP of the WNDAP350 to what you want for your network, say 196.168.1.10, and click apply. You can then set the computer adapter you were using back to "obtain an IP address automatically" and hook it back into your network. Now you are all set to put the WNDAP350 in your network and you can complete all settings from any network computer using the browser interface built into the WNDAP350. If you make a mistake in configuring the unit there is a reset button so you can start the process over.
If this made sense to you or you're willing to learn then you can't beat this AP as its one of the best around.

802.11G Wless Bb Router with qos Review

Router works pretty well except for the fact that IT LOCKS UP AT LEAST ONCE A DAY. It'll drop all connections (wireless and wired) and refuse new ones until you reset it. Plus, mine refuses to upgrade the firmware and gives "not enough resources" errors. I have hardware v1.0 so MAYBE v3.0 is better, but why take the gamble?

I bought that router because the cable modem from Comcast is crap, so I need a router to share the internet connection with other computers at home.
I am so glad that router is cheap because it's not an newest model, but it works well. It's not 802.11n but it's enough for me at this moment.

D-Link DWA-160 Xtreme N Duo Dual Band Draft 802.11n USB Adapter Review

D-Link DWA-160 Xtreme N Duo Dual Band Draft 802.11n USB Adapter
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I was unhappy with by Linksys adapter, I just purchase a extended warrenty on the adapter and I call tech support. They wouldn't help me; stating my router is out of warrenty. I decided to purchase all D-link products; Dir-825 router with the D-Link DWA-160 Xtreme N Duo Dual Band. Tech support was easy to reach and the tech directed me to the manual setting of the router, once there I had a idea from my research what to do and mention it to him. We followed the direction I got from [...] to the letter. I was only getting 130 Mbps with my adapter. I'm using Rev. A from Amazon.com with XP Professional. The only thing I did differently from the instruction I'm going to provide was to rename my network name by putting a "1" on the previous name so I would be sure to connected too the changed network. I'm running a total of three computer at the same time on the network and getting a very strong signal; the wireless connections are on the second floor of my house. You also would be safe to retype your password while in your manual setup. The instructions are as follows:
300Mbps Connection Requirements! Please Read!
« on: April 28, 2008, 11:21:08 AM »
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
To have your Draft N wireless network connect at 300Mbps as it should, ensure that the following requirements are met.1) The router and adapter are both D-Link 802.11N products and are using the latest firmeware/drivers. Ensure that the 802.11 Mode of the router has a 802.11N mode selected. Also if you have issues with mixed mode, try locking the 802.11Mode to either 802.11N Only or 802.11G/N.
2) If you are using encryption the router must be configured to use AES cipher. In some firmware versions/models, the only way to get the AES cipher is to run WPA2. If you can not select the Cipher, selecting WPA2 only will force this cipher type.
3) The channel width needs to be set to 20/40Auto, if it is not, the adapter will report a connection speed of 130Mbps. This is a feature that was added for compatibility with Intel 802.11N adapters, as they only operate on a channel width of 20.
D-Link reccomends that you use the D-Link Wireless utility, however the Windows Zero Config will also work.
Assuming you have met all of these conditions, you should see a 300Mbps connection speed with either the D-Link Utility or WZC.
Note: Not all Intel adapters are the same as D-Link's N line. Some Intel adapters do not support the broader 40 Channel Width option. This (by design) limits their connection speed to 130. Check the specifications of your Intel adapter to ensure that it is capable of bonding on the 40Mhz range to achieve the full 300Mbps.

Sure if I study it more it will work.
My internet identity was stolen 1 year ago, he has hacked all internet accounts and NOW with the help of this router I PRAY that he will no longer be able to take over anymore accounts. Hopefully he will be blind as to all our accounts.
Cudo's for such a really inexpensive unit that can finally protect us from him.
Thank you for carrying such a device.

I've given up on this product. The installation CD's first window was a mystery on what process to select since none showed as "installation". Called toll free number. Answered eventually (after enduring endless menu) by person who clearly spoke English as a second language. 30 min. on the phone later, I just gave up,thanked the guy for his time and ended the call. At one point I wondered if my call had prompted a hidden camera joke where eventually someone would tell me a joke had been played on me and the person I was speaking with really was Not a tech support rep etc.etc. I was absolutely worn out after dealing with Linksys's customer support for new installations. I had to repeat every sentence the guy said in an effort to confirm his instructions and then steps later, he would change his mind and have me un do something he had instructed me to do previously. After 30 min. on phone I questioned what to do with an included cable that he had not mentioned. When he told me it should have been installed many steps prior, I knew it was time to stop this torture. It was truly unbelievable ! End result: I am donating this unit to a local youth home, and buying another brand highly recommended to me by my neighbor who installed a wireless network in his home without any calls to tech support or any problems.I read scathing reports about the poor installation software on various Linksys products and now I am a believer. However poor the installation CD is, live tech support is worse....worthless, in fact.If you are not tech savy, I can't recommend using this product based on my installation misadventure.

Unit is solid and sturdy and has a bit of a utilitarian look to it. The software that comes with it lets you manage multiples of these devices at a time at a layer 2 level, meaning even if you don't know what it's IP address it, it'll find it and you can set it.
I had never setup WPA enterprise before, so it took a little bit of googling and trial and error, but I did get this going.
Device seems "faster" than the Linksys WAP54G we have been using.
I will be getting additional units to replace all the SOHO Linksys & Dell APs we've got in our organization all currently running WEP...

TP-LINK TD-W8960n Wireless N ADSL2+ Modem Router, A Review
[...]

TP-LINK TD-W8960n Wireless N ADSL2+ Modem Router, A Review

Introduction
In last week's column I talked about the issues I've had with the True supplied Billion Sky Modem and the Humack modems they carried previously.
Basically, despite many visits by True technicians, I could never get these two to work without dropping every few hours, often needing to be power-cycled to reset, and how after as little as a month old they'd progressively get worse. I have a box of over 10 of these, all in various stages of remaining function. The point with this was, even a brand new Billion Sky from the box resulted in the more than occasional drop and often needed to be power-cycled.

Finally I went to Pantip Plaza and asked for the best modem they carried. The True technicians had already told me the Dlink was the one to get, and the shops at Pantip confirmed this. At first I was excited with the Dlink DSL-2542b. More speed, no drops, and a reasonable price of baht 1800. Even though it took two True technicians two days to get it to work in a bridged mode with my Linksys WRT-350n Wireless N router, I was still happy because it was the first modem that worked without dropping. Then after less than 24 hours it dropped and required power cycling. It seems that every 24 hours, give or take, the Dlink would drop until it was power cycled.
A reader wrote in explaining that when running torrents the modem required an unusual number of connections and they probably weren't clearing from the buffer without a power-cycle reset. This makes sense, though I had no way to verify. Thank you!
I'd already ordered another unit, just in case, and it was on its way from the US. In the few short weeks it took for the new unit to arrive, the Dlink DSL-2542b's performance degraded noticeably. Speed decreased, power-cycle resets were required every 4-5 hours vs every 24 hours, and it started dropping like the Billion Sky from True. I exchanged it at the Dlink service center for a new one, and in less than 7-8 days of use it was acting the same.
And then the new unit arrived.

TP-Link TD-W8960n Wireless ADSL2+ Modem Router

TP-Link is a little known Chinese company in Shenzhen China. As most of the big name routers, including the Dlink and Billion Sky are manufactured in China, the TP-Links origin didn't bother me at all.
Unpacking the TD-W8960n I noticed it had very clean lines, was small and light, and included the power supply, two antennas, two RJ11 phone cables, one RJ45 connection cable, and a single ADSL splitter/filter in the event you use a phone on the same line.
The TD-W8960n is a single band (2.4ghz) wireless N/B/G wireless router with four physical Ethernet RJ45 ports, a standard phone line connection, and is rated to handle up to 24mbps download and 3.5mbps upload. As my connection is only 16mbps download and 1mbps upload this worked out fine.
It includes built in VPN tunnel capability, QoS protocols directly supporting most popular applications, a 300mbps Wireless N transmission rate, and just about any security protocol you can imagine. I won't go into all of the features, but except for the 802.11a band (5ghz) I can't think of anything it doesn't have. I've had the 802.11a band on my wireless routers for the last 6-7 years and they never get used so no big loss there.
The more I read over the specifications the more impressed I became. This unit doesn't lack for anything!
The front panel LED's are standard, power, internet, ADSL connection, QoS enabled, and 4 WLAN Ethernet port activity/connection LED's.

Installation
The first thing I noticed when I carried this small device (8x5x1 inches) to my office where my networking equipment is located, is that it would replace an equally large Dlink modem/router AND a much larger Linksys WRT-350n wireless N router. The extra space and cleaner look is much appreciated.
Back panel connections are standard. One standard phone line port to connect to your phone wall outlet, four Ethernet RJ45 ports, a reset button, a power connector, and an on/off button. The two antennas screw on in seconds.
For me connections were easy. I connected it to my phone line, and then a single RJ45 Ethernet patch cord into my Cisco 8 port gigaswitch already connected to my NAS devices and the 6 cables routed to different locations in my home. I connected the phone line, the one Ethernet patch cord, plugged the power transformer into my UPS device, and screwed on the antennas to their threaded mounts. I powered it on and left the office.

Setup

So far the TP-Link TD-W8960n shined, but where it really shined was in the setup. Type into your browser URL bar "192.168.1.1" and you're immediately rewarded with the login window. The default `admin/admin' user/pass combo gets you into the main menu.
I'm not going to go into the 50 pages of setup choices the user manual lists. I'll just tell you I found their user interface totally intuitive and in less than five minutes I'd configured my PPP0E account information (username/password/VPi&VCI (True supplied)) , set my LAN default address, configured my Wireless security protocol, enabled the DCHP server, entered and tested my dynamic DNS account information (needed to run an FTP, IP cameras, etc), and forwarded 5 different ports thereby enabling my NAS devices, FTP's, IP cameras, and my other LAN devices. I also changed my user name and password information.
Each menu heading expands as necessary into the appropriate sub-headings allowing you to easily find and configure only the areas you need.
In under five minutes I was done and pressing the "update and reboot" button was surprised to see the internet come on-line, the wireless connect to my laptops, NAS's worked, FTP's functioned fine, and all this on the first try and without help from the True Somchai's! What a pleasure.
I will say this, there are MANY menu choices, and even for functions you'll recognize there will be more choices than you're previously been familiar with. Looking through the menu choices I saw it was configurable and supported every major VOIP service, game, and device I've ever heard of. This is the most complete user BIOS I've ever seen.
More, it gives you three login choices. You can assign an administrator with full privileges, a support user/pass set in the event you need TP-Link's excellent customer service, and a User login if you just want to limit certain users to logging on selected VPN's or games.
There is also a complete statistics and logging center so you can keep track of line drops, line condition, up time, and about 100+ other line controls. The Diagnostics section tests every line condition for you and the help section explains each test.
What a great User Interface!

PerformanceTwo minutes to install, five minutes to configure my setup (and I have a complex setup), and a `save/reboot' later I was up on line and I haven't dropped or had to power cycle since!
Usually I don't review hardware until using it for a few months, but I've tested/reviewed enough of these modems/routers to know when one is working perfectly and without flaw and the TP-Link TD-W8960n is without flaw. It's possible it will fail electronically, and if it does I'll update this review at the end. If you don't see an update at the end of this review, it means this device is still working perfectly.
Going to Speedtest www.speedtest.net I confirmed I was actually exceeding my 16mbps download speed. A few months back my True technician told me he'd tweaked the node downstairs to give me 20mbps and now I was actually seeing 20mbps. My upload speed was pegged at the max 1mbps speed. I then went to Pingtest www.pingtest.net and immediately saw I was now pinging all A's and B's on my line condition where before the best I could get was a C-, usually D's and F's.
But the real proof is in using the net. Page to page loads are much faster, my Slingbox is slinging 30% faster than the best I've seen before, and my torrents are moving almost twice as fast! The proof in the pudding so to speak.
Wifi performance you ask? I'm not only seeing an approximate 40-50% greater signal strength and range, but the speed gains via the Wireless N are huge. It's like having an entirely new Wifi service.
For the next five days I held my breath waiting for a drop that has yet to happen, or the need for a power-cycle which hasn't happened either.
Because of the feedback and questions I received after last week's review of the Dlink, and noticing I wasn't the only one experiencing sub-standard internet service, and because this TP-Link TD-W8960n setup easily and performed flawlessly, I decided to write this review immediately, and if any problems arise in the future I'll update this review at the end.
I couldn't be more pleased, there are zero glitches, and anyone can set one of these up. Other than the color (white) I have zero complaints and only praise.
Oh, I got mine on Amazon for $72 USD's. I don't know if they're available locally, but I'll take a look next time I take a safari through Pantip and I'll let you know.

I'm happy I didn't read the reviews before buying this amazing adapter, because I now own one of the best USB network adapters money can buy! I do have to say that I did buy the lower grades of Belkin adapters and they were in now way comparable to this model... I'm averaging twice the network speed and blazing through internet sights like never before! I have been using the adapter with no problems what so ever with a netgear WNDR3700 N600... I will report back if I experience any adverse reactions to my computer/and or operating system. I'm not a computer network expert or wiz but rest assured that you do not need to be one in order to maximize the full benefits of this unit.

Netgear WGR614 Open-Source Wireless-G 4-Port Router - Designed for Linux Developers & Open Source Experts Review

Netgear WGR614 Open-Source Wireless-G 4-Port Router - Designed for Linux Developers and Open Source Experts
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
"Designed for Linux Developers & Open Source Experts" is marketing spin for "our router is broken and you'll have to fix it."
For starters, this router is marketed toward Open Source fans, but when you first start the router, it takes you through one of those 'configuration wizards' for setup, and it REQUIRES Internet Explorer. There's IE-specific JavaScript on the first page of the setup wizard, which is simply asking "Do you want to run the setup wizard?" and has yes and no radio buttons and a continue button. There's no reason for even having scripting on this page, but they put broken IE-only script there and the continue button doesn't work. Absolute incompetence.
After getting past the wizard, though, the normal web interface works in Firefox. But there are more problems to come. The router's DNS server is buggy and slow, and the router FORCES you to use it. I often couldn't get through to websites. It hijacks any DNS requests destined for a server on the Internet and handles them itself, so you can't go around the problem. Someone made modified firmware with a different DNS server. You need this custom firmware for the router to be usable at all. It will still hijack DNS with the modification, but it won't be so broken. This router is terrible.
I initially thought that my DS Lite didn't work at all with this router, but I found out quite unintuitively that you have to configure it in 'g-only' mode. The original DS and DS Lite are both b-only, so this is the only setting that logically shouldn't work, but it's actually the only setting that does work.
I also had connectivity issues with my Wii, but I seem to have sorted those out, and I'm not even sure what I did. The router would crash sometimes when I connected a device (Wii, DS, my laptop) and I've have to manually reset it.
I have it mostly working now but it just wasn't worth the trouble. If I knew in advance how much work it would be, I wouldn't have bothered. Only buy this if it's the cheapest router available, you have hardly any money, you desperately need a wireless router, it doesn't need to work well, and you've got plenty of free time to sink into tinkering with it. This router is terrible.

Good product - allows external access with minimal client setup. Setup of the router itself take a little time and the UI could be improved, but to get this function, it is a good deal.

TRENDnet 300 Mbps Dual Band Wireless N USB 2.0 Adapter TEW-664UB (Black) Review

TRENDnet 300 Mbps Dual Band Wireless N USB 2.0 Adapter TEW-664UB (Black)
Average Reviews:

I installed this on my G5 iMac, which natively only has 802.11g wi-fi. But with this adapter attached, I was able to stream 720p video from my iMac to the Apple TV without the slightest stutter.
Download speeds from the Internet were about twice as fast as before, according to a Speakeasy speed test. Upload speeds (to the Internet, not within my home network) were the same as before, but I suspect that's due to my ISPs upload speed caps.
There are a couple oddball things though. During the initial setup, it seemed to take awhile for my iMac to recognize that the device was connected to the Internet. Since then, however, it hasn't been a problem. Also, the device doesn't seem to like it when I download software via OS X's Software Update app -- downloads would stall out very quickly. Yet downloading the same update from Apple's support site worked flawlessly.
Also, when I woke the computer up from sleep, it appeared that the adapter didn't automatically reconnect to my network. But it established a connection the instant I started up the adapter's configuration app -- so quickly, in fact, that it may have just been a coincidence. Still, after doing that, the connection was as solid as ever.
Finally, the configuration app could definitely be more elegant and "Mac-like." But this is a minor concern. Some people might also not like the fact that the Mac drives aren't on the included installation disc. But they're easy to obtain off Trendnet's Web site.
Overall, so long as you don't mind starting up the configuration app when you wake your computer from sleep, this adapter should give you all the speed you need for normal Internet use and streaming video to your Apple TV or other media streaming box. Plus, it saved me from having to buy a new computer this year!
