D Link AirPlus DWL-900AP+ Wireless 22MBPS Access Point Review

D Link AirPlus DWL-900AP+ Wireless 22MBPS Access Point
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I bought another one of these to repeat my existing 900AP+'s signal to extend the range of my wireless network. It works great since I set it all up 2 weeks ago. I am not able to go all the way out to my backyard by the pool and still have Internet access on my laptop. This is very convenient when swimming or just laying and you get the urge to look something up on the Internet, but usually you don't because the PC is so far away. Not anymore. I am now able to bring my laptop out with me and maybe watch a DVD outside while I BBQ or just drink with my friends.
The repeater function looks like it only repeats other D-Link products. It also brings the speeds down to 11Mbps when you are connected to the network via the repeater. If you can get a signal with the main AP, then you are able to maintain your 22Mbps speeds.
Everything else about this AP has worked great for me as well and I'd highly recommend it.

The D-Link AirPlus DWL-900AP+ can be configured to perform in any one of four modes--as a wireless access point, as a point-to-point bridge with another access point, as a point-to-multipoint wireless bridge, or as a wireless client. It also includes an embedded DHCP server that, once enabled, will automatically assign IP addresses to wireless clients. It also eliminates the need for a separate DHCP server on the network. This unique feature is ideal for quickly creating a wireless local area network in offices or other workplaces, or a temporary network at trade shows or other events.
The DWL-900AP+ also features 256-bit WEP encryption for a higher level of security for your data and wireless communications.
The DWL-900AP+ is fully compatible with the IEEE 802.11b standard, making it interoperable with all existing 802.11b-compliant devices. But unlike standard 802.11b access points, its data transfer rate can be up to 20 percent faster. When your wireless network is comprised of other D-Link AirPlus products, such as the DWL-520+ wireless PCI adapter, the DWL-650+ wireless CardBus adapter, and the DI-614+ wireless router--transfer rates can be as high as 22 Mbps.

Belkin F5D8000 Wireless Pre-N Desktop Network Card Review

Belkin F5D8000 Wireless Pre-N Desktop Network Card
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I went completely Belkin PreN - Router, Desktop card, Notebook card, and Print server.
It was hell when I tried installing the PreN Desktop Card (this is in place of having an antenna) into the PreN PCI CardBus adapter on my new Dell Win XP SP2. The instructions tell you to install your Card "label side UP, into the PreN PCI Adapters' CardBus". Well, both sides have labels, so I took it to mean the words 'Belkin' and two small LED's as the 'UP' side. The Computer would not recognize the card. After multiple attempts, I thought I would have to return the PreN Desktop card due to incompatibility. I tried surfing the net one more time and came across a forum message with someone having this same problem. They spoke with Belkin tech support and were told that the Belkin installation guide is wrong. The card needs to be inserted facing 'DOWN'. I tried it and it immediately was recognized. As frustrating as it gets, I guess it just takes a little perseverance versus giving up.

So, aside Belkin's Topsy Turvy joke, I'm glad I got it to work because it's a screamer.

Sonnett Technologies G54-PCI Aria Extreme Wireless PCI Card (54 Mbps) Review

Sonnett Technologies G54-PCI Aria Extreme Wireless PCI Card (54 Mbps)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
So you want wireless Internet for your home? This is what you need. This card, a wireless router and either a subscribed DSL or cable connection (modem usually provided by your Internet company).
Unless you want to connect solely to your PDA and cellphone, don't get a bluetooth adapter (I was hoping that would be the cheap alternative to get me hooked up, but it's not). You have to have the two pieces of hardware to make it work -- the pci card and the router.
I've been a PC girl all my life, but recently bought an Ibook. I also bought an airport express base station with itunes so that I could have my Ibook online at the same time as my PC, but you could buy any wireless router. However, the aiport base is so easy to use, I highly recommend getting one, takes the headache out of configuring your wireless and allows you to play your stereo in any room of your home (a neat perk). You basically just attach your Internet ethernet cable into it, then plug it into any wall socket and it's set. Even though it's an apple router, it works just as easily with a PC. It's brilliant.
I did a lot of reading to try to figure out a compatible format that would allow both my PC and Ibook to get online and found this. The other reviews are right, this is the easiest set up of wireless imaginable. And the beauty of it is that it works just as efficiently on a PC (I own a Dell Dimension) as it does on a Mac.
Before you install this card though, be sure to drop by http://www.sonnettech.com/ downloads and get the Aria extreme PCI Windows Utility & Driver -- just have it unzipped in a new file folder on your desktop, ready for installation. For some reason the company doesn't ship a CD, and while Windows XP is automated for almost every product out there, for this one, you need to do a bit of legwork by getting the download at the website. So you'll have to be attached to your Internet before you install this card to get the download first.
Next, open your PC, install the card in any open PCI slot, close the computer back up, attach the attena, tilt it vertically up, and then reboot your computer. XP will give you a prompt to install ... just ignore this and close out. Once you're booted up, double click the "setup" file from the aria download and it will install everything for you.
Unhook your Internet cable (you only need to unplug the part that would go into your PC normally), plug it into your wireless router and within minutes it will detect your signal. All set up for your PC. If you are encountering trouble with the signal .. go down to your taskbar.. you'll see a green icon next to your clock, bottom right, double click on it and go into the configuration tab. Mid-way down you'll see something that says Network name, with a pulldown menu. For me, because I'm using an apple router, I chose "apple network" and immediately got "excellent" connection. Experiment with the choices and pick the signal that gives you "excellent."
Now this may sound more complicated than it is. I wrote out the step by step instructions in case you ran into problems, but if your installation was anything like mine, it'll take you about 10 minutes at most to get back online and WIRELESS!
As for the card itself, the speed is stunning. I am impressed that the Internet can go much faster than I already had with a straight cable modem connection.
All in all, this is an excellent solution to going wireless. I highly recommend it, and the airport base, to get you wireless-ed in your home.

US Robotics USR5441 Wireless MAXg Range Extender Review

US Robotics USR5441 Wireless MAXg Range Extender
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I was a little worried when I bought this extender, but I was pleasantly surprised when I got it set up and working. Installation is pretty straight forward and the best part is that it will work with non-USRobotics Access Points (like my Asus WL-500g Deluxe). Be aware that not all extenders (like the Linksys) will work with APs that aren't from the same manufacturer. I was having a problem getting signal to a new Squeeze box located on a different floor but adding this little box did the trick.
One note on the install: if your AP is set not to broadcast it's SSID (usually not set by default), you might have a problem finding it even if you enter its MAC address into the extender's configuration. I simply re-enabled the SSID broadcast, found the AP, configured the extender and then disabled SSID broadcast again.

D-Link DWL-3140AP Web Smart 802.11g PoE Access Point Review

D-Link DWL-3140AP Web Smart 802.11g PoE Access Point
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
These little jewels will be an ultimate test of your patients. They only work with a DES-1228P D-Link switch as mentioned. They have no web interface and use a little (buggy) SNMP application to set them up. This makes remote administration virtually impossible. Several times I had to default the switch and APs to factory settings to get the APs to configure. There is only two settings on the switch that need set to make the APs work. This equipment would not work on my network. I had to put the whole system (switch and APs) on their own network. Once you get them up and running it seems to work pretty good. The SNMP application is the biggest downside. You can setup groups and all sorts of stuff, BUT if you load the SNMP app on another computer it doesn't recognize the groups or settings you setup on the other PC. You'll have to set it up all over again. It uses a local database on your PC to store this info. The settings are stored in the APs so after setup you don't need to use the SNMP app unless you want to make a change. With groups you can push a single change to all APs in that group. Very nice feature if you're doing MAC filtering and don't want to type the MAC address on all APs.
Bottom line is I'd do some more research before buying this system again. I know there are more expensive systems out there like 3COM. A full web interface would make this setup much better. The switch has a web interface and I wish they could incorporate the AP setup in it.

D-Link DWA-160 Xtreme N Duo Dual Band Draft 802.11n USB Adapter Review

D-Link DWA-160 Xtreme N Duo Dual Band Draft 802.11n USB Adapter
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I was unhappy with by Linksys adapter, I just purchase a extended warrenty on the adapter and I call tech support. They wouldn't help me; stating my router is out of warrenty. I decided to purchase all D-link products; Dir-825 router with the D-Link DWA-160 Xtreme N Duo Dual Band. Tech support was easy to reach and the tech directed me to the manual setting of the router, once there I had a idea from my research what to do and mention it to him. We followed the direction I got from [...] to the letter. I was only getting 130 Mbps with my adapter. I'm using Rev. A from Amazon.com with XP Professional. The only thing I did differently from the instruction I'm going to provide was to rename my network name by putting a "1" on the previous name so I would be sure to connected too the changed network. I'm running a total of three computer at the same time on the network and getting a very strong signal; the wireless connections are on the second floor of my house. You also would be safe to retype your password while in your manual setup. The instructions are as follows:
300Mbps Connection Requirements! Please Read!
« on: April 28, 2008, 11:21:08 AM »
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
To have your Draft N wireless network connect at 300Mbps as it should, ensure that the following requirements are met.1) The router and adapter are both D-Link 802.11N products and are using the latest firmeware/drivers. Ensure that the 802.11 Mode of the router has a 802.11N mode selected. Also if you have issues with mixed mode, try locking the 802.11Mode to either 802.11N Only or 802.11G/N.
2) If you are using encryption the router must be configured to use AES cipher. In some firmware versions/models, the only way to get the AES cipher is to run WPA2. If you can not select the Cipher, selecting WPA2 only will force this cipher type.
3) The channel width needs to be set to 20/40Auto, if it is not, the adapter will report a connection speed of 130Mbps. This is a feature that was added for compatibility with Intel 802.11N adapters, as they only operate on a channel width of 20.
D-Link reccomends that you use the D-Link Wireless utility, however the Windows Zero Config will also work.
Assuming you have met all of these conditions, you should see a 300Mbps connection speed with either the D-Link Utility or WZC.
Note: Not all Intel adapters are the same as D-Link's N line. Some Intel adapters do not support the broader 40 Channel Width option. This (by design) limits their connection speed to 130. Check the specifications of your Intel adapter to ensure that it is capable of bonding on the 40Mhz range to achieve the full 300Mbps.

Ok, the other reviews of this product weren't that helpfull for me previous to my purchase of this product so i thought i'd throw in my two cents. I'm using this card to replace my old Linksys card which wasn't giving a whole lot of range or power and replacing my old liksys router. I'm now using the DIR-655 in conjunction with this card and i'm getting exceptional range! 300mbps at the fence of my property about 150 linear feet away through multiple walls. The card itself is able to detect networks from a lot farther range than my previous card. I'm very pleased with my purchase. Hope this helps others out. Good Luck.

D-Link DHP-1320 Wireless N PowerLine Router Review

D-Link DHP-1320 Wireless N PowerLine Router
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is a new power-line combo with a wireless N router so I thought it would be great in my office and extendable throughout my home. No such luck for the second part (see my review of the wireless extender DHP-W306AV). As a N router is seems fine. The CD-set up was not helpful, very confusing, and for example, did not connect to my FIOS(Verizon) router although the account/password was correct, or give me a choice of FIOS as an internet source. So I just plugged it into my current set up as I expected it to go, and after a bit with D-link support was up and running (support was fine). Namely: several devices into one 8-port switch. This switch into the 1320 router via one cable. The uplink from the router into a spare port in my Verizon router/FIOS connection. So I have both the Verizon and the D-link wireless networks going. Not sure if I can unplug the Verizon one and go directly D-link to FIOS (probably), don't want to spend the weekend trying this out. I do think that setting up these networks is terribly wasteful of time and effort. Why should I have to fight with IP addresses? And now I have a power-line N router which only does the N-part.
The wireless signal seems strong enough locally, but not enough for the house, so I am going to try a repeater, since the power-line option did not take. I have the Hawking HWREN1 Hi-Gain Wireless-300N Range Extender on order.
Update: the Hawking arrived and was set-up in 10 mins to give a strong signal throughout the house. No problems so far. Clearly the way to go for my situation.

D-Link DIR-655/RE Xtreme N Wireless Router Refurbished Review

D-Link DIR-655/RE Xtreme N Wireless Router Refurbished
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I'm on my second unit after the first one had range issues. When I replaced my old G-band router I expected to get better (or at least the same) range with the DIR-655. Unfortunately that was not the case, as my range was effectively cut in half. I made several calls to D-Link and they stepped me through some configuration changes, which did not help. After 3 calls, they told me to return it to Amazon and request a new one. Amazon's exchange policy was quick and painless. With the new router I have the same range as my old G-band model, but the speed is quite a bit better. After setting up the new one, I noticed that it was hardware version A4 as opposed to the first one, which was A2. With all that being said, if you get an A2 model and have issues, you may need to exchange to get a later hardware revision.
As far as the router goes, the setup was ridiculously easy and so far the performance and reliability have been fine. Plenty of features in the firmware to tweak. I haven't messed with the USB port yet, but other reviewers have some complaints on that one. Right now I'll call this a decent router for the price.
