(More customer reviews)I read the prior reviews but went ahead and bought this on the advise of a friend who intalls wireless networks for a living and he uses this access point a lot. I am completly pleased with this Linksys product. When you plan to use it for what it is designed for, an Access point, and don't have any notions that it is anything more, it chugs right along. I ran CAT 6 cable, (keeping under 300 meters total length) and used the AC adaptor supplied to power the unit. It is ran off a Linksys wireless-N router and a 5 station Linksys Workgroup hub. I mounted it in the downstairs coat closet behind my TV room and turned on my laptop, found it, and connected. I then entered it's webbased setup utility and configured it to my liking, (WPA2 security to match my wireless router) and I works like a charm. I am writing this review on my laptop, in my bedroom, where my upstairs router alone could never reach. I now have full bar service all over my complete property, inside and out. It is just what was needed.

Cisco Aironet 350 Series 11Mbps Wireless LAN PC Card Adapter ( AIR-PCM352 ) Review

(More customer reviews)I manage the wlan at work and test numerous cards. The Cisco 350 series is what we rolled of company wide for for employee use. The Client software (ACU) included with the card is straight forward and provides great info on the current connection and link status.
One thing you can do with this card that you can't with others is modify the transmit power for the card. The primary difference between the Cisco 340 and 350 series is the transmit power. On the 350 you can change this from 1mw to 100mw (the 340 series peaks at 30mw). This feature is especially handy, especially when taking my laptop from work to home (you just don't need 100mw of transmit power in a 1200 ft. apartment).
The hardware is great (Cisco acquired Aironet around 97 I think), the software is intuitive, and is fully compatible with many authentication methods other than wep (i.e., TLS, MD5, EAP, LEAP).
So why did I give this card a 4 star rating instead of 5 stars? Three reasons:
Client side software does not roam between discontiguous networks when using advanced authentication
Client side software does not include any kind of sniff feature to see what wireless networks are within range. I have to use third party software for that.
Cisco cards do not do true rfmon passive packet acquisition. Cisco (and I think Lucent) diverged from the prism 2 chip , so i keep my Cisco card for work and keep a linksys wpc11 (prism2 chipset) for "network analysis".

LinkSys tech support tells me that this is a normal behavior -- the unit might work for 1 hour, and then off for the next few hours, then again, on & off. I thought they would just replace the unit (since it is under warranty), but they wouldn't... they transfer instead to their technical support in India or Philippines... & would not replace the device saying that "when it doesn't work, it is a normal behavior..."

Wireless 7760 11 A/b/g Poe Access Point Review

(More customer reviews)For what I paid, I was seriously expecting an industrial-strength access point with a solid range. I have used other 3Com access points such as the 8250 in larger environments with desired results, but this one doesn't measure up AT ALL. I mounted it centrally about 7 feet up a wall, tried different antennas, different physical locations, different software settings, firmware upgrades, etc, but my cheap crappy netgear consumer wireless router gets better range, and from farther away will generate a better signal than this 3Com.
Sorely disappointed.

(More customer reviews)It had the latest firmware and wireless protocols installed, and the web-based configuration interface has well organized pages of setup options. The Help pages are actually helpful. As with any networking device it is good to be a little familiar with TCP/IP so you can handle minor annoyances like giving your computer a temporary static IP address in the same subnet range as the DWL-7100AP so you can communicate with it during configuration (This is explained in the manual). Afterwards, I was able to change my computer back to dynamic IP addressing, and still access the configuration pages of the DWL-7100AP. It will work just fine right out of the box with default settings, but as with any wireless access point, better security can be had by creating your own SSID name, disabling broadcast of the SSID, changing the default user ID and password, using MAC filtering so that only your computers will be accepted by the access point, and enabling data encryption. The DWL-7100AP allows you to use two kinds of WPA encryption, which is much more secure than WEP. I highly recommend this product and it's well-written manual. Some users report having their connection dropped frequently. I found that interference from 2.4 Gigahertz portable telephones in my house was the culprit for dropped connections on the 802.11g band, which is in the same frequency band as the phones. Since I switched to the 802.11a band (5 Gigahertz) I very seldom have dropped connections from the DWL-7100AP.

I'd go with some other brand if you have to support Apple equipment. 3Com does have a handy Windows program for discovering and configuring these things, and their web config interface is pretty good as those things go.

The Netgear WN802Tv2 is an Access Point that is meant for an existing network that already has a router setup. In other words, you will need to have a wired or older wireless-g router in place before you can use this device for Wireless-N Connectivity.
Basics first:
Whats in the Box? Access Point, Ac Adapter, Ethernet Cable, Netgear CD, Quick Start guide, Warranty Card, and Stand.
Setup:
So begins the install and testing. I was mildly irritated when I read the quick start guide. Most of you that have routers with a 192.168.0.x address will be ok and can install this thing in a jiffy where as others that use different ip addresses like 192.168.1.x will have to go through a few extra steps as I did. Basically this access point comes configured with a 192.168.0.x address out of the box...therefore you must follow the quick start guide and first connect it to your computer with an ethernet cable to configure it. That being said, if your network provides 192.168.0.x addresses and you are not using 192.168.0.233 you should be ok to plug this in and set it up via your browser.
Once the IP situation is ready to go you simply open your web browser and go to the 192.168.0.233 ip address. Log in with the username and password on the quick start card and you are given access to setup the access point with your preferences. Here are some of the basics:
1. Upon Entry - Name of Access point and Country it is used in.
2. Time Zone and If you would like to use a internet time server.
3. IP Settings - you can manually assign it an ip address or have it use dhcp to get one from your existing router.
4. Wireless Mode - 11b, 11BG, 11NG - all at 2.4ghz (another disappointment).
Once you get more deeper into the setup you are able to go through a multitude of wireless options which include things like the broadcasting of your wireless id, security, quality of service etc. This access point does include Quality of Service settings for Wi-FI Multimedia (WMM) which basically provides preference to multimedia based content over the wireless network.
This access point allows for a good array of security settings and supports Wep 128/152bit, WPA, etc....it also adds support for Radius Settings which can be found in an enterprise environment.
Wireless Performance:
This is probably one of the hardest tests to run but I was able to get some results. I used a commonly known speed test site to test my broadband connectivity whilst using the Netgear access point. As background, I have about 15-20mbps download and 2mbps upload via Comcast. The speed test on this router was similar to what I have achieved on my D-Link and Apple Airport Extremes. For that it gets a 5/5.
Speed testing was not enough and now it was time to stream a hd quality movie from this device onto my ps3 from a mac.....this is probably where this access point will shine. I usually stream movies and get a bit of stutter here and there...so I wanted to make sure I tested a movie that I have played before. I started the the movie and saw a stutter for about one second...but once it started streaming it played on and I did not notice any of the usual issues. The WMM QOS does work (wi-fi multimedia quality of service). More testing will continue and I will update my review to indicate the good or bad.Now for my thoughts and opinion on the product:
The size of the device is nice and the look is perfect. The picture on the product page does not do it any justice. The LED's are perfectly light and not too bright...they wont take your eye out.
I like the documentation, it will allow any user from novices to advanced users to be able to get up and running quickly with this device....More advanced documentation is on the resource CD. Note...you do not need the CD to install the device as the quickstart will guide you in the right direction at the get go.
The price is high - If you are going to spend over $100 to buy an access point you are better off spending the same amount to buy a new router which has built in Wireless N abilities. Even if you dont need another router, you can buy one and use it as an access point.
NO 5ghz - Another negative - most wireless-n routers are now able to broadcast in 5ghz mode. This router does not have that ability...and again for something with this price point it should. You can also spend $10-20 more and buy a dual band router which broadcasts in both 2.4ghz and 5ghz modes. With all of the wireless around our homes and offices, it is a must to have the 5ghz band so our computers can run un-affected by other wireless devices such as cordless phones etc....
Wireless performance is on par with other products and the WMM-QOS features make this access point shine.
Last but not least - and this may be just for me - but I think that Netgear can make this device ship so that it can pick up a DHCP address from our existing networks. This way everyone that buys one is able to plug it in and get to setting it up. I have seen this done on a multitude of products and Netgear can surely adopt those feature sets. I am a little knowledgeable in these things, but for a home user I would not want them changing ip addresses on their computers and plugging routers into them...its a bit on the complex side.
I think there are many improvements to be had on this item and price is definitely one of them. While I like the performance of the wireless, I do not like other things, as stated above, thus my rating is on the low side.
3/5 for me....sorry Netgear.

(More customer reviews)My husband has a computer business and has purchased 5 of these devices for various customers. Each and every one of them have failed. Three of them within the 3 months Netgear will provide free support for and two of them after 1 year.
When they work they don't work so well, a lot of disconnects, and network not found. Working with support stated that too many wireless networks in a congested area will cause this. Understandable, but hardware failures are not understandable.
Out of the five of them, Netgear has replaced the three that failed withing the 90 period and they have been taken out of service since then. There were too many network disconnects to be useful.
When they fail the power light comes on, but nothing else. No network light when the cat5 cable is plugged into it, nor does the wireless work on the device either.
My husband made the mistake of purchasing them when they were fairly new and paid over 170.00 per. What a mistake. DO NOT PURCHASE THIS AS IT IS JUNK.

TRENDnet 14dBi High Power Wireless Outdoor PoE Access Point TEW-455APBO (White) Review

(More customer reviews)I purchased 2 of these units to setup WiFi for a mountain condo building (3 floors by 5 units). Both units are mounted on opposites end of the building on the top (3rd) floor. Setup was relatively easy (maybe not if a first timer). The one time I had a question for Trendnet (prior to purchase) their response was prompt and helpful. Units are attached to a DSL modem/router. Since we can only get 7MB DSL service I have limited the APs to 11b. So can't comment on higher speeds. So far all units are reporting good service.
These units are hard to beat for the price. Not as powerful as the Cisco units but you can buy 2 (or more) for the same price.
Note: Units have been installed about 5 months now at a condo building in the Colorado mountains at about 9000 feet. Units are mounted outdoors. Temperature range in that time has been about 85 to -20 F. So far so good.

NETGEAR WG302 ProSafe 802.11g Wireless Access Point Review

(More customer reviews)I purchased 3 of these APs with the expectation to replace 3 Cisco "b" APs and drop in. The setup used Radius for authentication which is claimed to be supported in both the online info and docs. After config (the web UI constantly has problems with cookies and forced you to re-login) the system would work. One quark was the IP address field for the radius server wouldn't accept more than one character in the forms. Up and running. However, upon reboot, the WG302 loses it Radius info and then cannot authenticate a client again. SHOWSTOPPER. After logging this with Netgear support - their response is this is an unsupported config and requires premium support. While this would be fine if it was a config issue, it's not ok given they claim support for these features and this was a required feature for purchase. They give no further support now.
I would HIGHLY recommend against the extra cost of this unit given it's buggy and has poor support. Config is difficult (I had to learn how to use the command line config), the upgrades are not well documented (they imply you have to import some obscure file with tftp - you don't but...), however the unit does have good range and works (No RADIUS of course) in a basic config.

I just wanted a wireless way to share my broadband internet connection between our home office desktop, my PDA (iPAQ 5455) and our kitchen/family room based laptop. The Microsoft MN 500 Wireless Base Station is the ticket to easy wireless networking. All you really need to read is the 4 page quick start guide and the device will be up and running. I read the very informative 100 page manual as well and learned a thing or two, but I really didn't need that informtion. The base station connected flawlessly -though I did reset my cable modem after connecting. That is not in the instructions but my ISP told me it would be a good idea. The base station has worked perfectly since and the signal is very strong throughout my house, upstairs and down- and in fact even in my driveway outside (so I was certain to leave the built-in encryption feature on to prevent drive-by theft of my signal.) My base station is tucked into a cubby hole in my computer desk next to the cable modem and has no problem sending its signal throughout the house. Those who have had problems with the signal probably just need to move the device. There is a lengthy discussion about placement of the base station in the manual (away from metal computer cases, for example). The MN-500 also comes with a hardware firewall. There is much debate as to whether software or hardware firewalls are best. I'm testing. The first two weeks I had my base station I disabled the hardware firewall and continued to use my Norton software based protection. Now, I've disabled that and am using the MN 500 alone. The ease of installation and the firewall and encryption features make this a great product for people who want to share the internet at home but don't want to learn the inner workings of wireless.

(More customer reviews)Previous dead spots in my house are gone - replaced with 80+% signal strength and high speed. I was using a Netgear FWAG114 (dual-band b/g) but it couldn't reach everywhere. I have the WPN802 on the top floor of my house in a corner and it reaches everywhere without exception, even my backyard sitting on my porch at the opposite end of the house - which I couldn't do before.
Installation note: by default DHCP is not enabled - you have to perform the initial setup by setting the IP address on your PC and plugging it directly into the unit first - awkward - but it does work as the manual instructs you to do. Some people have complained about the blinking blue rotating lights on the top from the antennaes (who doesn't like blinking blue lights!), anyway, there is a cap (think of a pirate's eye patch without the head band) that fits over the lights if they bother you. Excellent - highly recommended.

RANGEMAX WIRELESS ROUTER Netgear RangeMax Wireless Router (WPN824)because of the advertised (last year Sept)
-MIMO (Multi-In, Multi-Out) technology boosts network performance with up to 10x the speed and 10x the coverage of Wireless-G
Result: Signal traveled straight up to the upper floor without a problem, but could not reach the rooms from the middle to the front of the house 2nd ,3rd ,or 4th floors (Comcast cable modem placed on the second floor back). Mysteriously connections would drop without reason from time to time. Theory Comcast equipment was causing that problem, too, wireless phone and fax interference too being the possible gremlins.

Phase 2-Linksys Wireless-G Range Expander WRE54G
used 3 Linksys Wireless G Extenders to act as repeaters on the upper floors. Could only manage to get a strong signal partially to the second floor but signal was intermittent. Could only link two extenders but the second, again dropped the signal intermittently and the dreaded `limited or no connectivity' message began. Observation proved these messages materialized while roaming-connecting to the second or third node (first node being Netgear WPN824). Though the signal was seen (in some cases very good) Netgear had a time issuing IP addresses past the first node.
Phase 3, after spending 1 whole day surfing the net for info. I decided to start anew....after much comparing and no reviews to go by. I decided on the Linksys WAP 200 because of its versatility and advertised signal strength - it could be an accesspoint, a repeater, or a bridge...and because I had the G extenders from Linksys that I became familiar with....

Setup 1- Continue the Netgear as the Ethernet to cable box, wireless access point, with DHCP server, using the 2 200's as repeaters. The main problem, after becoming familiar with the WAP200 was still the `Limited or no connectivity' message. I `trial and erred' the settings ,I observed a correlation between RIP and the error msg.I also noted the msg occurring much more on my older lap (XP home), vs my girl friends newer (XP) lap.
Setup 2- using the Netgear as the DHCP server, Ethernet to cable box SWITCH. One of the 200's would account for a wireless access point (located on the second floor, 2 ft from the Netgear), the other a 200 a Repeater (3rd floor hall...I added a Hawking Technology's HAI15SC,Hawking HAI15SC 15dBi Hi-Gain Directional Corner Antenna 2.4GHz Hi-Gain Wireless Corner Antenna, boosts your wireless signal strength from 2dBi (standard) to 15dBi to the second floor 200...didn't think I needed it). This configuration covered the whole house, there were a few low signal readings at the extreme ends on the 4th floor 3ft from the front window , which I intended to eliminate with the Linksys G Extender.
Which brings me to the only concern- AP Mode gives you the opportunity to use the 200 in either 1 of 3 modes
AP Mode Screen
Use this screen to configure the Access Point mode. The three available modes are Access Point, Wireless Repeater, and Wireless Bridge.
The 200 that was used as the wireless access point needed the MAC address of the 200 used as a Repeater (in Repeater mode-- max 3 MAC addresses). Adding the address of the second wap200 (as Repeater) was'nt an issue, all worked perfectly. When I added the MAC addresses of the G Extenders `Limited connectivity' messages again appeared, I tried various combo's including changing the order but always a problem...perhaps the repeaters have to be legit repeaters or WAP200's...anywho I found this interesting and will be taking the 3 extenders back to Best Buy
Conclusions-
overall I found the Linksys WAP 200 a really good product. I don't believe you have to know the nuts and bolts about networking to get the WAP200 up and running. The documentation will not be of help to a newbie, but if you google your concerns you may learn a thing or two. $124 is a really good price for the endless possibilities one could use this 3-in-1 wireless network product......btw I speed tested the connections, watched video (google video, Youtube) while roaming around the house and it never dropped a signal.
it is now 11-28-2008 and this product has been running non stop since the original review..

The Cisco Aironet 113x WAPs are solid, professional devices. The 113x's are very configurable, and provide an exceptional feature set, reliability and distance -- even in congested areas. BUT: they require a very tech savvy consumer to configure them properly.
Tech Notes:
- This devices does not include a DHCP server -- the default config uses the DHCP server on your wired LAN -- there is NO default IP address.
- If default configuration does not work, you will need to use the console interface -- you'll need a serial connection and understanding of telnet.
- Securing the device requires an understanding of the difference between WEP and WPA and use of hex keys (no ASCII)
If any of the above is confusing or scary, you might consider one of the Linksys WAPs (Linksys was recently purchased by Cisco). They tend to be more sensitive to traffic congestion and have lower range, but they are much easier to configure.

NETGEAR WG102 ProSafe 802.11g Wireless Access Point Review

(More customer reviews)The NG102 works like it should--with one exception that I've found. If you set it up in Bridge Mode, it will NOT work with WPA security--you can only use the inferior WEP security.
WEP can be cracked in under 24 hours (the netgear helpfiles built into the WG102 setup pages even say this), but they still force you to use WEP security when bridging.
Additionally, Netgear's tech support is ABYSMAL. I have submitted several trouble tickets with questions, and it sometimes takes them TWO WEEKS to reply--and even then they did not give a reasonable answer to my question, they gave a stock answer to something I didn't ask. The user suport forum is much better, but you're not guaranteed to get any help there, either.
*** UPDATE: 12/27 - I'd like to downgrade this product to ONE STAR! ***
This access point would lock up at least once a day. The only solution was to unplug the power and plug it back in.
I found it had particular difficulty when trying to transfer files over the local network and when running internet speed tests (such as www.speakeasy.net/speetest). Somehow they seemed to confuse or overwhelm the access point, and it had to be hard-reset. Neither of those activities should have caused it any trouble at all--especially not this (much more expensive) "business-class" access point.
After spending way too much time troubleshooting the problem, I have finally given up and will return it.

TRENDnet 54Mbps Wireless G Access Point TEW-430APB (Blue) Review

(More customer reviews)I have a couple of computers in one room, connected via LAN to a Linksys Wireless G router/access point, which is connected to a DSL modem. I wanted to put another computer an an Ethernet-attached printer on the floor above. The standard way to do this would be to run a Cat-5 cable from the Linksys router to a small hub on the upper floor, and connect the new computer and printer to it. It would be a long and complicated run, though, and would involve drilling through the floor. Not impossible, but I didn't really look forward to doing it.
This device seemed to be just what I was looking for: a way to replace a long run of Cat-5 cable with a wireless link. Put the TRENDnet Access Point on the upper floor along with a small hub (the Access Point has only one Ethernet jack), and plug the computer and printer into the hub.
The Access Point offers five modes of operation. The one I expected to use is called "WDS", for Wireless Distribution System. From the user manual, it appears as if this is the mode for just extending a LAN as I wanted to do. I was never able to get this mode of operation to communicate with the Linksys router. The manual is not well written, and the help windows from the Access Point's built in web server are even worse. Using browsers to look at the settings of both the Linksys and the TRENDnet, I verified that everything that I can set was entered correctly: Channel number, SSID, passphrases, MAC addresses, everything. No connection was ever made, in WDS mode.
So I tried "AP + WDS" mode; still nothing worked.
Finally I tried "AP Client" mode, in which (quoting now) "the AP will be a wireless Ethernet adapter transforms any Ethernet-enabled devices to have the wireless function." From the diagram, it would seem that only one device (computer, printer) could be attached. I tried connecting the switch with both computer and printer to the Access Point in this mode, and finally it all works.
Now that it's working, it is doing just what I wanted it to. The new computer can access the internet and share files with the ones downstairs, the downstairs computers can print on the upstairs printer, and so on.
The poor manual and even worse help text really drags this product down. I would have rated it much higher if it hadn't required so much experimentation to get it going.
