Dynex DX-E401 4-Port Ethernet Broadband Router - Router - 4-port switch - desktop Review

Dynex DX-E401 4-Port Ethernet Broadband Router - Router - 4-port switch - desktop
Average Reviews:

Usually I don't purchase "no name" products, and Dynex is not very well known. I purchased this product in desperation - my brand new Linksys router stopped after 2 days of erratic work, and I was in the middle of urgent work and needed quick replacement. This was the only "other" brand available at local Best Buy store.
I was very positively surprised - it took me not more than 5 minutes to make this router working, virtually without any setup except defining the ISP type (dynamic). Works very well and stable.
Later I did some tweaking with firewall settings. Highly recommended.

TRENDnet Wireless N PCI Adapter TEW-643PI Review

TRENDnet Wireless N PCI Adapter TEW-643PI
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Bought it locally for ~$40. After installing it, I cannot get it to connect faster than 26 Mbps, when I should be getting 150Mbps (that's as fast as my Linksys N Router will go). Connecting to a Netgear G router will only get me 11 Mbps - nowhere near where it should be.
Besides it being slow, it seems to lose signal every now and then. It recovers after a minute, but my Vaio laptop (a couple years old and a few rooms FURTHER from the router) *never* has any problems losing signal.
The Trendnet wireless configuration utility is not awful, but it is far from user-friendly.
It gets two stars because it connects and it works. But not very well.

Netgear MR314 802.11b Wireless Cable/DSL Router with 4-Port Switch Review

Netgear MR314 802.11b Wireless Cable/DSL Router with 4-Port Switch
Average Reviews:

This is a nice piece of gear because it saves having to get a wireless hub and router separately, which frees up the 4 ports for just computers, and eliminate extra wires and boxes and power cables.
Router:
A great feature of this particular router is that it can email you activity logs which show what websites were visited on that day through the router. You can also block access to websites or any site that contains a keyword, so this could be useful in small office and home (children) use. (By viewing the website activity logs, you can find out which sites to block so that next time the user tries to go there it will say "blocked by netgear" and you will be notified of the attempt.) You can also lockout times and dates.
This Router does NOT have a firewall built in- even though this box looks like the netgear firewall router (the one for the same price without the integrated wireless hub).
Wireless hub-
Average range. Security wise, you can set it up with 128 bit WEP and with MAC Address authentication, which secures your network to a reasonably safe level. ALSO MAKE SURE YOU CHANGE THE ADMIN PASSWORD FOR THIS ROUTER, AND FOR ANY ROUTER.
Cons: The antenna can not be changed or removed. The unit is not designed to be hung from a wall like the SMC wireless hub. (WHY would you do that? To get better wireless range).

THE UNIT
The unit itself, like all netgear products, is metal and a nice dark hue of blue, with several blinking indicator lights. I am happy with my one, which uses a DSL connection with static IP address to feed 4 computers and two wireless laptops.

Cisco-Linksys WEC600N Dual Band Wireless-N Ultra RangePlus Expresscard Review

Cisco-Linksys WEC600N Dual Band Wireless-N Ultra RangePlus Expresscard
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
My late 2008 unibody Macbook Pro recently lost the Airport card to a glass of water. Before forking over $1400 for a hefty tier 4 repair (AppleCare doesn't cover water damage), I decided to feel out my options for add on WiFi cards.
Initially my experience was horrible, after going through both the MX Nubbin and Dlink USB adapters which claimed to work with Mac OS X I decided to give up. Not that either of the aforementioned products are bad, they are just not quite ready for prime-time when it comes to Mac OS X support (especially Snow Leopard support). Both the Dlink and MX Nubbin used the same Ralink based chipset which has immature Snow Leopard support via software (ie, no WPA Enterprise support, which is a killer for me because I need to connect to corporate WiFi).
Before giving up and forking over the $$$ to Apple Repair, I decided to try to find something which could make use of my ExpressCard slot. To be candid, it's one of those slots on my MBP I didn't plan on ever using. Boy, was I wrong!
I bought this adapter, plugged it in, and instantly Airport lit up! Cautiously optimistic, I joined my WPA Enterprise network and had no issue. I was ecstatic. The card only sticks out about 1.2 inches. I then went home and tried to join my WPA2-PSK network, no problems there either. Full native Airport support, I'm not sure what else one could want...no need to deal with 3rd party driver software! Yay! Actually, double yay.
Wrt to the overheating, I've been rsync'ing a large directory for 49 minutes (sustained @ 40mbit/sec) and:
1) I have not experienced disconnects
2) The card is not warm at all. In fact, the "better battery life" GPU is warmer than anything around my ExpressCard slot.
Summary: I cannot speak to the experience of Windows users with this card but it's been near perfect in Snow Leopard for me.

Aluratek 3G Portable Wireless USB Cellular Router Review

Aluratek 3G Portable Wireless USB Cellular Router
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Being an "IT" guy I see gadgets and new stuff all the time. Frankly a lot of it is junk or simply an infatuation with the latest thing. This however turns out to be a useful tool if you need portable, high speed connectivity and happen to have a USB 3G card. I needed something for mobile connectivity in to work. Within 15 minutes of getting the Aluratek I had exactly that, and it worked perfectly with my client based VPN. Even when in a moving vehicle!
There aren't a lot of frills, its pretty much a simple firewall with the ability to utilize 3G cards for Internet access. One really nice feature with this cellular router versus another brand I also considered is the addition of a battery, as it opens a lot of possibilities and flexibility.
The price is right and since its a simple device that didn't require hours of tinkering or fussing.
2010-10-05 Follow up: Turns out that after figuring out how to update the device firmware, it also tethers very nicely with my Blackberry Curve 8530 simply by plugging it into the USB slot with the Blackberry cable. In fact the access was consistent faster via my Sprint USB stick (both are via Sprint). The firmware was not hard to find if you Google the Zalip CDM530AM.
There are times when the unit may not be quite as strong on signal strength as I would like, it must default to 25% wifi signal when running off of battery and resetting it higher requires a router reboot. In spite of that I kept the rating at five stars due to ease of use and overall reliability. The unit fits into a small pocket of a computer bag and is easy to carry with you. The battery lasts at least several hours and that's sufficient for most purposes, and not much worse than my Blackberry 8530 when using it via bluetooth tethering.
