Netgear WGR101 Cable/DSL Wireless Travel Router Review

Netgear WGR101 Cable/DSL Wireless Travel Router
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I applaud Netgear for being first to market with this device (the only other I know of is the Apple Airport Express), designed for geeky business travellers. There've been many times when I've been in a hotel with wired Internet access but wanted to use my laptop across the room in bed, or in a conference room with one wired network drop and a handful of people who wanted to use it. Travelling with a 30-foot cable and/or a multi-port switch is no fun. This device is light and tiny, has a modest-sized power adapter, and even comes with a short cable for connecting to a wired port and a zippered carrying case for all of that plus your pc-card NIC.
If you're not concerned with security and have your wireless NIC set to do DHCP basically all you do is plug it in and you're all set. Configuring the device is kind of a pain though: you can only connect to it wirelessly, so if you forget the SSID after setting it not to broadcast, or forget the WEP key, you have to use the reset button and start over (make sure you hold it down a good 10 seconds, just pressing it once quickly doesn't work).
It doesn't act quite like a typical router despite some product literature I've read: on a hotel network it doesn't provide firewall or NAT security--keep in mind if the hotel assigns you a public IP you're bare naked on the Internet.
Although the physical switch on the unit that puts it in config or single-/multi-user mode is a neat idea for security, it gave me a lot of problems having to reassociate or power cycle the device after changing settings. Given that in its default state it's a pass-through device like a bridge and has no IP address, there may not be a significantly better way though.
I had little to no luck using this device with my home router or cable modem, but on a hotel wired access point it was seamless including VPN connectivity (unlike my Netgear MR814 at home). Range is very good even through walls and floors/ceilings. I got mine for about half price after rebates which, I think, just barely makes it worth it. If you like to have the latest gadget, and especially if you travel, this is less of a pain and certainly niftier than carrying around a 30-foot cable and/or hub.

Have you ever felt like using a wired Ethernet connection in your hotel room was not much fun?Was the desk or chair uncomfortable, and sitting on the bed or soft chair preferable while accessing the Internet wirelessly?Have you ever wished to have convenient wireless access for a group of people in a conference room?NETGEAR has the perfect solution for your wireless Internet access needs away from home. The WGR101 54 Mbps Wireless Travel Router is as small as a deck of cards, yet provides 54 Mbps wireless Internet access as well as routing functionality and security.Use an external switch to select configuration, or to enable either single or multi-user access.A convenient carrying case is included in which to carry the traveler's router along with other essentials.

Virgin Mobile Broadband2Go Wireless USB Adapter - Black (VMMC76NTKIT160) Review

Virgin Mobile Broadband2Go Wireless USB Adapter - Black (VMMC76NTKIT160)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This device is a very fast (Sprint Network) and economical way to get onto the mobile internet without having to get locked into an expensive contract. Make sure you check your account each month that you use it though. I caught them skimming MB off my account. When I contacted them on it, they gave me a $10 credit to cover what they had taken from me, but made no apologies for it occurring. If you opt for this type of service, I strongly recommend that you add your usage history to your "remaining MB" a few times a month to ensure you are getting what you pay for. The month I caught them, I had used 138 MB in my history and they showed me having 98 remaining for a total of 236 vice the 300 I had paid for. It took three e-mails, and over an hour on the phone with a "technician" to get a $10 credit out of them to make up for it. Not the sort of thing that would happen with Verizon or another first tier carrier.
Now that they have gone to an "Unlimited Plan" at $40 a month, I am upgrading this to 5 stars. You can't beat the deal on this and my previous customer service issue is negated with this new pricing tier.
$40 a month for unlimited internet, and the ability to turn it off during the months that you don't use it, is a great deal. Because of my overall positive experience with this company, despite the problem I mentioned above, I have switched both our cell phones and our mobile data to them. I now pay $90 a month ($25 + $25 + $40) for what would cost $200+ a month from VZ or ATT.

3G Wireless-N Travel Router

I use this device with a Verizon USB modem. It works great in many US cities. The product worked as stated immediately after plugging in the USB modem. The battery life is sufficient @ around 3 to 4 hours depending on amount of data streaming. It is a great companion to my wifi Ipad. There have been instances where speed was slow but I was able to confirm that it was due to the Verizon network range inside some office buildings.

D-Link DWL-G730AP AirPlus G High Speed 2.4GHz 802.11g Wireless Pocket Router/AP Review

D-Link DWL-G730AP AirPlus G High Speed 2.4GHz 802.11g Wireless Pocket Router/AP
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
We travel a lot: international, domestic, business, vacation, moving (hotel living for a month every two years) and an annual month of Leave- jumping from house to house all over the US. So our computer gear has to be small, tough and ultra compatible... which the D-Link Pocket Router is- in Spades! (We got the Netgear first... horrible.) The other (positive) reviews have been right on about the technical aspects, so I only want to add a few other notes:
1. The D-Link is compatible will every modem we've hooked it to... from dial-up (scary) to DSL and Cable. From the big name modems in the US to the strange things you find in people's homes in Asia... it synced with each one and worked great... just plug it in and you're wireless!
I would also suggest picking up a cheap usb wifi adaptor. If someone doesn't have a wireless router already, they will likely only have a desktop and since you will be connecting their modem to your router, you will need to make the desktop 'wireless'.
2. The D-Link really shines in hotels. There have been no problems hooking it to the Ethernet connections in the myriad of hotel rooms we stayed in: from Alabama to Bangkok (even Abu Dhabi). The plug is not only 110-240 but is not grounded so can be fitted to any overseas power adaptors. The reach overseas does vary wildly and where it's mostly concrete construction (Asia, Middle East, etc...) you are better 'sharing' the connection through windows and floors/ceilings, than walls. Good to keep in mind when you are watching the children at the pool or sharing an expensive connection with co-workers.
3. Even if you do have wi-fi on your lap top, if you're at a hotel with wireless "in public areas" or even in a house where the bubble is small (hand me down wireless routers that only reach to the gifter's guest room for example) try using it as an access point... you'd be surprised.
All in all, the slick design and very small size (compare it to the other travel routers and you'll understand) coupled with ease of use and overwhelming compatibility make this a necessity for any traveler... or expat.

Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Having owned an Alfa AWUS036H, I was hoping the R36 would exhibit the same excellent quality and reliability since they both come from the same company. The feature set and concept behind the R36 plus pairing it with the AWUS036H are just great, but that's just about the only good thing I can say about it. The R36 is quite a big disappointment for me and I don't know how this even passed their quality control or even their usability tests.
First, the R36 won't let you connect to WiFi hotspots with spaces in their SSIDs, such as "My Hotspot" or "WiFi Fo Fum".
Secondly, for some unexplainable reason, the R36 disconnects intermittently. Sometimes it stays connected for hours, but there are times it just disconnects after a few minutes. This doesn't happen when using the other WiFi routers I own that run for weeks or even months non-stop without hiccups.
I'm just hoping that these flaws could be resolved by future firmware updates. If not, this was just a complete waste of time and money.
UPDATE (11/04/2010):
I recently checked Alfa's website for firmware updates and I was elated to see a new R36 firmware released just last 11/02/2010. I immediately downloaded it and updated my R36's firmware and all my complaints above have been resolved. The control panel interface was also updated and reorganized, but the DHCP Clients list doesn't always work. I've been testing wireless connection stability by subjecting it to around 600 simultaneous incoming/outgoing connections, downloading multiple torrents on three laptops.
So far so good. I would give it a 5 star rating once I verify consistent stability for at least a week of continuous use and after Alfa gets to fix all minor interface bugs on the next firmware release.
UPDATE (12/03/2010):
After a month of rigorous use and testing, sadly, the R36 still has connection stability issues. It's a moody device. Sometimes it works fine. Then sometimes connections will intermittently drop, then reconnect. There are times while browsing, you will get broken/unloaded images, or a page would fail to load. You will then have to click on reload/refresh to load the page and images successfully, sometimes you need to do this twice or more. This is just very annoying. A major flaw that requires Alfa's serious consideration and attention.
Secondly, when paired with the AWUS036H, the site survey shows far fewer and weaker hot spots than when using the AWUS036H directly. Latency/ping response is also slightly better with a direct AWUS036H connection by 5ms to 10ms. I really wouldn't mind the small difference if only the R36 could maintain a stable and consistent wireless connection.
UPDATE (01/05/2011): 0 out of 5 stars
As of today, my R36 is dead. No power. No nothing. It's not even 3 months old. This is a complete waste of money. Look for a better router. Don't buy this!

We use one of these for tradeshows to connect multiple computers at the booth and can share the connection with our colleagues in other booths. When the wife and I travel, we can be on the internet on separate laptops. If a client is without internet for whatever reason, this can serve them for a short time days until they are back online.
It's easy to setup and with the firmware update never drops the connection to Sprint.

Subject to customer authorization by Linksys. The Linksys Wireless-G Router for Mobile Broadband is really three devices in one box. First, theres the Wireless Access Point, which lets you connect both screaming fast Wireless-G (802.11g at 54Mbps) and Wireless-B (802.11b at 11Mbps) devices to the network. Second, it is a built-in 4-port full-duplex 10/100 Switch to connect your wired-Ethernet devices together. Connect four PCs directly or attach more hubs and switches to create as big a network as you need. Thirdly, the Router function ties it all together and lets your whole network share a mobile broadband Internet connection (requires a mobile broadband data card). Alternatively, you can also connect a cable or DSL modem to the Ethernet port and access the Internet via your available broadband service. Once your computers are connected to the Router and the Internet, they can communicate with each other too, sharing document files, a printer, storage space, and other resources.

Cradlepoint MBR1000 Review

Cradlepoint MBR1000
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I purchased this unit about 14 months ago. It was purchased from [....]. I had decided to finally get my parents some sort of high speed internet because dial up just wasn't cutting it. They live in the woods about 5 miles from the I-5 freeway but DSL or Cable doesn't come down the road. It goes right by the end of it but not down it. So for Christmas of '08 I went to Sprint and purchased the Air Card, well the card was free just had to sign up for a 1 year contract. I asked them about a router for this and they told me to visit [...] and look at Cradlepoint. I found the MBR1000 and when I buy something I want to make sure it is the best. So I purchased it. Got it in about 4 days. Once I figure out where I was going to get the best signal for the air card it took me about 10 minutes to set up the router, air car, and my parents computers. I have had no trouble with it. I think the LOS (Line of Sight) is underestimated. I purchase a range booster for it as well and the neighbor said he could get 1-2 bars of signal (Router signal not modem) at his place. He is about 100yds from my parents house with a couple of trees in the way is all. We unplugged the range booster and the signal stayed the same. Turns out the Router itself was getting that range. He could sit out on his deck and use his laptop with 1meg download speeds. I would recommend this product to anyone. As a matter of fact a close friend of mine doesn't have high speed internet at her house and she wants to get the same thing that my parents have. I am going to recommend the MBR1000 especially since it has gone down in price since I purchased it. I was astounded by the range it can get. I did however have to purchase an antenna for the modem itself because it wasn't the best cell signal in that area but I went from 1-2 bars, 2nd bar flashing to 3 solid bars of signal with the external antenna mounted on the deck. DO NOT but directional range booster antennas because the cell companies will not tell you where the towers are so you can aim it. The margin of error in pointing one of those is too small to get it. I used a Trucker antenna from Wilson Electronics that works great. I hope someone finds this useful and makes a decision based on this review.

Novatel Wireless MiFi 2200 3G Mobile WiFi Hotspot Modem (Verizon Wireless) Review

Novatel Wireless MiFi 2200 3G Mobile WiFi Hotspot Modem (Verizon Wireless)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The device works well in areas that I have traveled to or lived in with good Verizon coverage.
Your result will vary STRICTLY based on VERIZON COVERAGE IN YOUR AREA.
I believe that the operation and connectivity functions of the MiFi device deserve 5 stars. The configuration page (accessible at 192.168.1.1 when connected to the MiFi) allows you to encrypt your connection and even setup a MAC filter. Unfortunately you cannot change the DNS servers at the device level (but of course can still do this through your computer's connection settings).
The signal to and from the device is strong enough to put the MiFi under your seat, in your pocket, etc and still maintain a fast connection.
The battery life will vary based on what you are doing online. Streaming audio and video will shorten battery life quicker than checking email, looking up web pages, etc. This is an easy fix if you are in a vehicle: plug in a cigarette lighter adapter or even plug in the USB cord to your computer or laptop inverter to keep it charged and running all day long.
The only real con that comes up on a regular basis is a fairly small one... the blinking activity light on the MiFi is so bright, it is distracting in a dark vehicle. I wish they had instead set up a solid green "connected" light similar to the one that is on the Apple Airport Extreme Router.
Overall, with good Verizon service, definitely worth the purchase and ridiculous price Verizon charges for the service.
*NO cellular device or service is going to be able to stream uninterrupted audio and or video while you are traveling. As you leave cities and regions, your device will lose service while it is searching for the next tower, etc. Your best bet if you want smooth audio and or video is to stick with satellite radio or portable satellite TV, downloaded podcasts and videos, etc. However, if you are commuting back and forth in a metro area or staying in the same basic spot (parking lot, etc) this is fantastic for video and audio streaming and everything else.

this router is working great for me as a repeater/internet bridge. I must say that initially i was confused during configuration as it seemed that if i made a change using the web interface and applied it, sometimes i would notice that something i did earlier would get wiped out. this may have been intentional (for example my changes may have been in conflict), because when i used the 'one click setup' option in the web interface everything worked just fine. The router has been working consistently for 2 months now and i have never had to reboot it.

Buffalo Technology N-Technology Wireless-N150 Router and Access Point WCR-GN (White) Review

Buffalo Technology N-Technology Wireless-N150 Router and Access Point WCR-GN (White)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I've been using a powerline adapter to get ethernet to my slingbox and other A/V equipment, but powerline is very sensitive to anything and everything. So I started looking for an affordable wireless bridge. Here it is in the WCR-GN.
To be clear (since the packaging is not) this unit can be used as a standard access point and firewall, or as a bridge to connect to your existing wireless network and give you five ethernet ports in a remote location--a wireless switch. The box leaves you wondering if this unit is compatible with other brands of access points--it is.
I got the unit, plugged it in and configured it for bridging mode, and it connected to my D-Link DIR-625 wireless network with no problems (using 802.11n). It brings me much better and consistent throughput to my A/V equipment than did my four port powerline unit. In bridging mode the "WAN" ethernet port becomes a fifth switch port.
The web management interface is quirky and unrefined, but it gets the job done. When you make changes that cause the unit to reset, the screen usually says it will take about 20s. It really takes 1-2 minutes to settle down and stabilize, so don't get too impatient. The radio seems to have a more limited range than most, but it's acceptable for my purposes. It is a rather small unit, so can fit just about anywhere.
This unit can also act as a simple access point with a no-frills firewall, but I don't intend to use it that way and haven't tested it. What I did test was streaming my slingbox to my desktop while simultaneously watching an HD YouTube video streaming to my BluRay player. Both were running through the Buffalo in opposite directions. Pretty basic stuff, but I had to make sure it performed given the price. Neither had a hiccup, which is again far better than my old setup.
Lastly, in bridging mode it can also act as a wireless repeater to extend your existing wireless signal, or to add more SSIDs. I don't have a need for this and only tested it briefly.

Cradlepoint CTR-350 Cellular Travel Router (Black) Review

Cradlepoint CTR-350 Cellular Travel Router (Black)
Average Reviews:

The CTR350 is a great little Mobile Broadband/Wifi router. It's designed to use a mobile broadband data device (I'm using Sprints U595), and provide access to it via Wifi. It worked right out of the box in a default configuration, though you probably want to enable security after testing it out, or else everyone will have access to it.
Set-up is via the usual web-browser interface, and this devices interface is laid out pretty well. It struck me as being more sensible than most of the Linksys/Netgear devices I've used. Its got a nice full featured firewall, various WEP and WPA authentication modes, and can be used as a wired access point too (there's an Ethernet port). Apparently the port can also be used to provide wired access to the mobile data device too, but I haven't tested that yet.
The router is not battery powered (see the PHS300 for that). It comes with a standard ac power adapter. There is also a dc power adapter available for use in a car. I've mounted mine in my car, and hardwired a cable for it into the wiring harness of the car so that I can have internet in my vehicle wherever I have Sprint service. Cool!

Aluratek 3G Portable Wireless USB Cellular Router Review

Aluratek 3G Portable Wireless USB Cellular Router
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Being an "IT" guy I see gadgets and new stuff all the time. Frankly a lot of it is junk or simply an infatuation with the latest thing. This however turns out to be a useful tool if you need portable, high speed connectivity and happen to have a USB 3G card. I needed something for mobile connectivity in to work. Within 15 minutes of getting the Aluratek I had exactly that, and it worked perfectly with my client based VPN. Even when in a moving vehicle!
There aren't a lot of frills, its pretty much a simple firewall with the ability to utilize 3G cards for Internet access. One really nice feature with this cellular router versus another brand I also considered is the addition of a battery, as it opens a lot of possibilities and flexibility.
The price is right and since its a simple device that didn't require hours of tinkering or fussing.
2010-10-05 Follow up: Turns out that after figuring out how to update the device firmware, it also tethers very nicely with my Blackberry Curve 8530 simply by plugging it into the USB slot with the Blackberry cable. In fact the access was consistent faster via my Sprint USB stick (both are via Sprint). The firmware was not hard to find if you Google the Zalip CDM530AM.
There are times when the unit may not be quite as strong on signal strength as I would like, it must default to 25% wifi signal when running off of battery and resetting it higher requires a router reboot. In spite of that I kept the rating at five stars due to ease of use and overall reliability. The unit fits into a small pocket of a computer bag and is easy to carry with you. The battery lasts at least several hours and that's sufficient for most purposes, and not much worse than my Blackberry 8530 when using it via bluetooth tethering.

I had doubts that this would work with the T-Mobile laptop sticks. It worked within minutes and now we never have to worry about breaking one of the laptop sticks. Two or three of use one laptop stick at the same time with the router.
