D-Link DCM-202 DOCSIS 2.0 USB/Ethernet Cable Modem Review

D-Link DCM-202 DOCSIS 2.0 USB/Ethernet Cable Modem
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I bought this cable modem when I moved into my new apartment because it would be cheaper than renting one from Comcast in the long run. Everything worked fine for about a month, but then I wouldn't be able to connect to anything outside of my local network. Comcast technical support said that from their end it didn't look like anyting was connecting to their network, and my router could release and renew its IP address, so that narrowed it down to the cable modem. Unplugging the modem and plugging it back in would make it work again for 30-45 minutes at a time, but it would cut out at random without warning.
I downloaded and installed new firmware from d-link's website that was specifically for Comcast customers and everything seems to be working ok again, but I know a lot of non-technical people who wouldn't be comfortable doing that. If you are a technically unsaavy person and use comcast, you may want to purchase another cable modem all together.

Zoom CableModem 5241 - Cable modem - external - USB / Ethernet - 42 Mbps Review

Zoom CableModem 5241 - Cable modem - external - USB / Ethernet - 42 Mbps
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I used previosly the modem model 5041 over 5 years already. There were issues with connection at first time, but it was solved when I called to my provider (Comcast by the way). Since then I never had any problems with this equipment. I would keep it till it die of the old age but on Dec 14 2009 Comcast upgraded its network so I had to pick new modem from their approved list of modems for 3 days before of marked day. I checked reviews and picked the ZOOM 5241. I have wireless router (linksys 54G) connected to my 5241.
What did I do for setup.
1. Unplugged old modem from power, coaxial and router,
2. Plugged new modem 5241 to his power adapter, coaxial cable and router (with RJ45 connector),
3. Lunched Internet browser (Firefox or IE),
4. I got Comcast page with instructions automatically (It wouldn't let go for another until setup is done),
5. Followed technician instructions (which not require any special skills),
6. Entered my current account number and Comcast shown me all my data including physical and mac addresses. I did not plug in directly from modem to PC. At first Comcast did not pass linksys. I just ignored it and "run diagnostic" (which is just a button) again. Everything was set up automatically. After too reboots I got perfect connections wire and wireless.
Downloading speed jumped up dramatically.
PS. One week later.
Zoom 5241 works now with renewed Comcast network very good. However once I lost connection but because of the my LinkSys 54G wireless router. After I hit reset button on it I got all my connections back. So it was a linksys issue. Right now Zoom + Linksys work flawlessly. And I noticed that downloading speed went up about 10 times faster (Limewire from 15-24 Kbs to 200-500 Kbs - 250 average).
Well 5041 is useless for Comcast IP for today anyway but 5241 works perfect. I picked mine in Fry's Electronics with described above characteristics for $54.
Good luck

Took bars from 1, too max. The product does as it was intended, the only down point I can give it is lack of stability. The mount system rely's upon the stretching of plastic, which over time will fatigue, and if you try to stretch it too far will break. It is not stable to simply sit on a table so you must mount it in some way. A flat stand option would be nice, but for the price you can't beat it.

Cisco-Linksys WPC300N Wireless-N Notebook Adapter Review

Cisco-Linksys WPC300N Wireless-N Notebook Adapter
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Linksys WPC300N Wireless-N Notebook Adapter
The Linksys WPC300N has some nice features in a PCMCIA card. Unfortunately, many high expectations based upon the wireless N standard will leave a lot of people disappointed. I'm going to discuss Windows XP and Vista separately, since I bought the card a long time ago and have used it on both.
First and foremost, this card was created when the Wireless-N standard was still in draft form. In fact, I have had this card for more than 2 years, which tells you just how long ago that was. There's nothing wrong with that, just be aware that there are several limits in this card.
First, this card can be configured to achieve greater throughput by setting up multiple data channels. That's the `MIMO' technology that uses multiple radios, which they vastly over-hype on the packaging.
However, the improved range of the wireless N standard as compared to wireless G just never materialized. That's because this is still a 2.4 GHz card. Newer wireless N products with 5 GHz capabilities are on the market which give much better range than this.
Second, the firmware AND software for this product initially were each very buggy. I first installed this product on Windows Vista and have tested it on some 2003 boxes. All of those required multiple reinstalls and driver downloads. In the end, the GUI configuration tool is very limited in explicitly give you the information you need to know whether you are getting a faster connection with this device. So if you're not techy, this can be a drag.
The wireless security support of WPA2 is nice, and most legacy cards don't have that. It gives you stronger encryption (256 bit). But this only really works if your access point is configured that way too. Linksys WRT300N Wireless-N Broadband Router And in that case, there are newer cards and access points that give you this and more.
Still, I can say without a doubt, that when I needed to add another wireless connection to my Vista Ultimate box, this guy worked much better.
Bottom line, there seems to be a lot of people clinging to XP. If you're one of those, plan on downloading and updating your driver software and firmware before even testing this card.
If you are a Windows Vista user, only get this if you need a spare card for backup machines or multi-card setups. If you need something for your primary wireless access, you may want to avoid this and the WPC600N Linksys WPC600N Ultra RangePlus Dual-Band Wireless-N PC Card altogether and go with the 5 GHz Netgear line. NETGEAR HD/Gaming 5 GHz Wireless-N Networking Kit (WNHDEB111)
Pros
+ Works well on Windows Vista
+ Does give you MIMO support for greater capacity
+ Once you set it up, seems to work well with Wireless G
+ PCMCIA slot saves you from using a USB port
+ Nice WPA2 support
Cons
- Doesn't give you full Wireless N capabilities (only 2.4GHz, no 5GHz)
- Legacy OS users need to download and install many updates
- Price is still surprisingly high
- Somewhat buggy software requires frequent shutdowns
- Better options available for the price
This card might be worth looking into if you can get it on sale and need an extra one for an older laptop.
Enjoy!

The Wireless-N Notebook Adapter is the simple way to add or upgrade wireless connectivity in your notebook computer. Just slide it into your notebook's PC Card slot and enjoy incredible high-speed wireless network access while retaining true mobility.
The Wireless-N Notebook Adapter uses the very latest wireless networking technology, Wireless-N (draft 802.11n). By overlaying the signals of multiple radios, Wireless-N's "Multiple In, Multiple Out" (MIMO) technology multiplies the effective data rate. Unlike ordinary wireless networking technologies that are confused by signal reflections, MIMO actually uses these reflections to increase the range and reduce "dead spots" in the wireless coverage area. The robust signal travels farther, maintaining wireless connections up to 4 times farther than standard Wireless-G.
With Wireless-N, the farther away you are, the more speed advantage you get. It works great with standard Wireless-G and -B equipment, but when both ends of the wireless link are Wireless-N, the throughput can be increased even more by using twice as much radio band, yielding speeds up to 12 times as fast as standard Wireless-G.
Once you're connected, you can keep in touch with your e-mail, access the Internet, and share files and other resources such as printers and network storage with other computers on the network, wherever you wander. At home, you can surf the web or use instant messaging to chat with friends while sitting out on the patio. You'll also be able to connect with any of the growing number of public hotspots springing up in coffee shops, airport lounges, hotels and convention centers. Your wireless connection is protected by industrial-strength 256-bit encryption. The included Setup Wizard will walk you through configuring the adapter to your network's settings, step by step.
The incredible speed of Wireless-N makes it ideal for media-centric applications like streaming video, gaming, and Voice over IP telephony, and gives you plenty of headroom to run multiple media-intense data streams through the network at the same time, with no degradation in performance. Get your notebook connected to Wireless-N, Wireless-G, and Wireless-B networks with the Wireless-N Notebook Adapter from Linksys.

Virgin Mobile Broadband2Go Wireless USB Adapter - Black (VMMC76NTKIT160) Review

Virgin Mobile Broadband2Go Wireless USB Adapter - Black (VMMC76NTKIT160)
Average Reviews:

This device is a very fast (Sprint Network) and economical way to get onto the mobile internet without having to get locked into an expensive contract. Make sure you check your account each month that you use it though. I caught them skimming MB off my account. When I contacted them on it, they gave me a $10 credit to cover what they had taken from me, but made no apologies for it occurring. If you opt for this type of service, I strongly recommend that you add your usage history to your "remaining MB" a few times a month to ensure you are getting what you pay for. The month I caught them, I had used 138 MB in my history and they showed me having 98 remaining for a total of 236 vice the 300 I had paid for. It took three e-mails, and over an hour on the phone with a "technician" to get a $10 credit out of them to make up for it. Not the sort of thing that would happen with Verizon or another first tier carrier.
Now that they have gone to an "Unlimited Plan" at $40 a month, I am upgrading this to 5 stars. You can't beat the deal on this and my previous customer service issue is negated with this new pricing tier.
$40 a month for unlimited internet, and the ability to turn it off during the months that you don't use it, is a great deal. Because of my overall positive experience with this company, despite the problem I mentioned above, I have switched both our cell phones and our mobile data to them. I now pay $90 a month ($25 + $25 + $40) for what would cost $200+ a month from VZ or ATT.

I got this with my new linksys wireless-n router and this little thing works great. In a part of the house where I barely got a signal from my old dlink w-g router I know get a 70-80% strong signal with speeds between 250-350mbps!
I highly recommend this adapter to anyone. That stand, although it comes with the adapter, is not needed. The retail comes with an extra ~1ft long usb extension cord.
Remember: All Linksys wireless-n adapters and routers are backwards compatible to w-b/g.
I hope this helped anyone. The price may seem high but for the speed and reliability you get, you'd wonder why you didn't hear/get it sooner.

The Linksys WUSB300N Wireless-N USB Network Adapter lets you access the fastest and most advanced wireless solutions currently available. With this unit enabling your PC or laptop, you can run media-intensive applications at amazing speeds, without the hassle or expense of stringing a lot of wires.
The Linksys Wireless-N USB Network Adapter uses the very latest in wireless networking technology, Wireless-N (draft 802.11n). By overlaying the signals of multiple radios, Wireless-N's Multiple-In, Multiple-Out (MIMO) technology multiplies the effective data rate. Whereas ordinary wireless technologies are confused by signal reflections, MIMO actually makes use of these reflections to increase the range while reducing dead spots in the coverage area. This means the signal travels farther, maintaining wireless connections at up to three times the distance of standard Wireless-G, so the farther away you are, the more speed advantage you get. This Wireless-N adapter is fully backward compatible, so it works great with standard Wireless-G and -B routers, but when both ends of the wireless link are Wireless-N enabled, you can experience increased throughput by using twice as much radio band, which allows speeds up to 15 times that of standard Wireless-G.
To help protect your data and privacy, this wireless adapter can encode all its wireless transmissions with iron-clad, 256-bit Wireless Protected Access (WPA2) encryption. Yet, despite a robust and deep set of features and functionality, configuration is simple and easy with an included web browser-based configuration utility. The incredible speed of Wireless-N networking is ideal for media-centric applications like streaming video, gaming, and voice-over-IP telephony, and gives you plenty of headroom to run multiple media-intense data streams at the same time, without worrying about a degradation in performance.
The Linksys WUSB300N Wireless-N network adapter is easy to use, and can be plugged in to any open USB port. To experience the full advantages of Wireless-N technology, it is highly recommended that you use USB 2.0. This unit is FCC, CE, and IC-03 certified, receives power through its USB connection so it doesn't require an external power supply, and is backed by a manufacturer's limited three-year warranty.

Cisco-Linksys RT31P2 Wired Router for Vonage Internet Phone Service Review

Cisco-Linksys RT31P2 Wired Router for Vonage Internet Phone Service
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I had the Motorola ATA (analog telephone adapter). The voice quality was fine unless other people were downloading. Then I would have dropouts. I bought this product specifically because it support Quality of Service, reserving bandwidth when using the phone to maintain voice quality.
In order to take advantage of QoS, all traffic has to go through this router. No problem, I did my homework and ensured that it had all the features I needed; port forwarding, a DMZ setting, and IPSec and PPTP passthrough. I installed this in front of my current firewall, assigned my current firewall to the DMZ address, forwarded all ports, enabled IPSec and PPTP passthrough and I was all set - I thought.
My current firewall is also a VPN device - it establishes an IPSec tunnel to a matching firewall to another location. This works fine, the RT31P2's IPSec passthrough works well. All servers behined the RT31P2 are also functional, Web, mail, ftp, etc. Great!
But for 2 weeks I could not understand why no one could complete a VPN conection PPTP) to our Microsoft remote access server. Turns out the the "PPTP Passthrough" setting on the configuration menu (and in the manual) is for show only - it doesn't work. A search on the Vonage forums and a Vonage tech representative confirmed this. So even though I did my homework, downloaded the manual ahead of time, etc, I still have a paperweight - I have to go back to my Motorola ATA. Worse, Linksys says it's a Vonage problem, and Vonage has no plans to fix this issue.
As an aside, I bought the RT31P2 about 5 weeks ago (I can't return it for an RMA). Back then I found a number of sources that sold it. I just did another search and most have taken it off their web sites. Is the word getting around that this is a Mickey Mouse device? (No offense to Micket).

With Vonage, you can make phone calls over the Internet, potentially save on long-distance charges, and access a rich assortment of calling features. Plans start as low as $14.99 per month, and the Premium Unlimited plan offers unlimited calling to the U.S. and Canada for only $24.99. And it's easy to use--for making and receiving calls, Vonage works just like traditional phone service, with no special access codes or account numbers required.

All Vonage plans let you enjoy the call features you've become accustomed to: call waiting, caller ID, voice mail, call forwarding, three-way calling, call return, repeat dialing, and reliable long distance... plus other features that may be new to you. For example, you can receive your voice mail as an e-mail attachment, and you'll have a phone number that travels with you. Visit www.vonage.com/amazon to see which plan is best suited to your lifestyle and budget. The low monthly rates are quite reasonably priced, in our opinion, and with them you may save considerably compared to traditional phone service. International calls are available for additional low fees, with one economical exception: calls from the U.S. to Canada are treated as domestic long-distance calls, rather than international ones. Vonage also supports short-form emergency 911 service, where available. (Dialing 911 requires activation and operates differently than traditional 911. See Vonage's website for details.)
The starter kit comes with a Vonage-certified Linksys RT31P2 router, avoiding the need for a separate phone adapter. All you need is a high-speed Internet connection (cable or DSL) and a touchtone phone. After setting up your Vonage account, you'll have instant access to two lines, each with a separate phone number--you can even assign them different area codes, subject to availability. You'll still be able to surf the Web while talking on the phone or receiving faxes.
The router allows you to connect up to three PCs and two telephones or fax machines, and they'll all share a single Internet connection through which you can smoothly transfer data of all kinds. While talking on the phone, you can still share a printer, make backups, or simply move your latest presentation notes over to your laptop. With easy Web-based configuration, all these options are available at the click of a mouse. Linksys backs the router with a generous three-year warranty.
What's in the Box The Linksys RT31P2 broadband router with two phone ports and three switched Ethernet ports, a power adapter, a setup CD with user's guide, a network cable, Vonage plan and support information, a Quick Installation card, and a registration card

I use this device with a Verizon USB modem. It works great in many US cities. The product worked as stated immediately after plugging in the USB modem. The battery life is sufficient @ around 3 to 4 hours depending on amount of data streaming. It is a great companion to my wifi Ipad. There have been instances where speed was slow but I was able to confirm that it was due to the Verizon network range inside some office buildings.

3G Wireless Broadband Router Review

3G Wireless Broadband Router
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This stylish product is made by LevelOne, has by far the smallest footprint of all routers I have seen, and appears to work with the widest range of 3G modems.
The 3G broadband router turns your 3G wireless broadband into a WiFi connection. Why would you want to do that?
a) to let several computers share one 3G wireless broadband connection simultaneously
b) to use the internet at a place in the house where the cell phone signal is not so great, i.e. place the router where the signal is strong and let it send "the internet" on to your laptop in the basement
The router has an amazing number of advanced settings and features to lock down and filter traffic, so security should not be a problem if you want to set your home network up in any imaginable configuration. It almost works out of the box, just follow the instructions in the small quick start guide provided: attach antenna, insert PCMCIA card, connect the supplied ethernet cable to your PC, connect power. Then start browser and go to 192.168.0.1 , enter password, move to advanced, select 3G under WAN (yes, under WAN) and it is ready. The only thing to know is that for the Verizon PC5750 PCMCIA EVDO card the following settings apply:
Dial-Number: #777
Username: xxxxxxxxxxx@verizonwireless.com (where you put your cell number)
password: vzw
The PC card has to have been activated, which means it has to have been used before. If you don't know your cell number, insert the PC5750 into the computer and connect, the number will appear in the bottom of the Verizon Access Manager software.
By default the wireless network is open, so should be secured. The router antenna output power can be adjusted if you don't need to cover a large area.
I called Technical Support before purchasing and they were prompt and knowledgable.

i had purchased this product a month ago and i left a poor rating for item. something i NEVER, EVER thought would happen, happened. someone noticed! 30minutes after leaving feedback, a manager from the company called me to resolve the issue at hand!! my mouth dropped open! this is the very first time that i actually believed that someone cares! my experience may have been rocky in the beginning, but with this little phone call, the road smoothed out and i am definitly happy! this was the most wonderful way for this company to earn ALL of my computer business in the future. if they have the item i need, i will most definitly try and buy it from them. i will go as far as to say, i'd pay a little extra for something just b/c i know that they stand behind their product. Sela is the person that contacted me this morning and he said that he was the manager. WoW! i am stunned! thank you for your consideration in contacting an otherwise unhappy consumer. you have made a believer out of a non-believer!

Netgear WGT624NAR Super G 108 Mbps Wireless Router Review

Netgear WGT624NAR Super G 108 Mbps Wireless Router
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
UPDATE - 2010-MAR-20:
I bought yet another Netgear WGT624 Wireless Router but this time for my parents. And yet again, it was this particular refurbished (recertified) wireless router. But this time, I ordered here on Amazon from CompUSA who is a third-party seller here on Amazon instead of from Tigerdirect who is also a third-party seller here on Amazon. CompUSA is actually owned by the same company that runs Tigerdirect. Tigerdirect still sold this wi-fi router here on Amazon, but the CompUSA price was lower. I figured it had to be coming out of the same warehouse and they were just doing separate accounting for what products sold under their CompUSA store brand versus their Tigerdirect store brand. When I received the wi-fi router, the shipping box from CompUSA and everything inside the box including the invoice were just like if it was coming to me from the Tigerdirect branded store except it said CompUSA. Also, the separate emails (apart from the amazon emails) from "CompUSA" looked like what I remember getting from "Tigerdirect". Anyways, my parents dumped AT&T DSL and switched to cable internet. And they needed a wi-fi router to work with the cable modem. As expected, this was an easy setup. The cable modem was to be connected to a wall connection behind the TV set which was sitting on a shelf built into the wall in the living room. As a result, the cable modem and this Netgear wifi router would be sitting behind and to the right of the TV on that same shelf in the wall. When my parents would watch the TV, they could lean a little bit to right to see the lights on both the cable modem and the Netgear wi-fi router. There was no interference with the TV reception (over-the-air antenna tv) and there were no problems with the wi-fi throughout the house. So, it is all wi-fi for all of the computers at my parents' house with excellent five-bars wi-fi connection to the internet.
UPDATE - 2009-DEC-29:
I bought another Netgear WGT624 Wireless Router but this time for my sister. Again, it was another refurbished (recertified) wireless router that I bought again from Tigerdirect that they had for sale here on Amazon. It is simply a good product that is easy to set up. Something that I should note, if you have a desktop computer sitting next to your cable modem or your DSL modem and this Netgear wi-fi router, if you don't have an ethernet connection on that computer, try either using an ethernet USB adapter on that computer to directly connect to the Netgear wi-fi router with an ethernet cable -- or use a wi-fi USB adapter. Or, better yet, install a wi-fi PCI card into the motherboard on that desktop computer. My sister's desktop computer had no ethernet connection and I found it to be better to turn that computer into a wi-fi capable computer. Of course, having this Netgear WGT624 Wireless Router is to have other wi-fi capable computers elsewhere in their two-story house to able to have a wi-fi internet connection.
ORIGINAL REVIEW: I got this Netgear WGT624 Wireless Router last year and it's been working great. It's turned on all the time sitting next to a Motorola cable modem on top of a bookcase cabinet with their lights blinking. I got this Netgear router for $19 plus S&H. It was recertified and for me that means it works. And at $19 that's a great deal and worth the risk. I want to get another one (since they're not ridiculously expensive) for when if this may possibly go kaput. I don't expect that to happen, but you have to prepare for such a possible eventuality since I don't want to be without a wi-fi internet connection - just be prepared to swap out the old and put in the new. Swapping out things is an old habit I've had from when I did backup systems analyst work having to prepare for things not working and breaking down - I try to have eventual backups (always on the lookout for cheap prices for same equipment that I have) for everything not just software backups but hardware backups also. Anyways, it's simple to set up. Just plug the ethernet cable to connect the router to the cable modem and then plug it all in. You can connect four computers to the router via ethernet cables. I have one ethernet cable going from the router to an eMac and another cable going out but not connected to anything - that's a spare for if I want to have a direct ethernet cable connection for a laptop. Otherwise, it's wireless for my macbook downstairs for me, wireless for my sister upstairs, and wireless to a desktop PC. It all works. When you first set it up, you have to go into the Netgear smartwizard (local) webpage to set things up - I did this via a computer connected to the router via the ethernet cable. Be sure to set the security options (for the encryption) settings with whatever name (SSID) you want for your local network as well as input whatever password/passphrase you want to use. Then go to each of your computers to set up the wi-fi connection by inputting the password/passphrase. Easy to do. Oh, there are two plastic stand-feet thingies that you put on the corners of the router to make it stand up on its side and you can have the antenna point up in the same direction. I rather have it standing up that way which I think gives it better reception and not sitting flat. I don't understand the complaints by others, except that for me if I see that the device is recertified then I expect it to work. I'm happy with this router and you have to be a braindead gruntbrain to not be able to set up this Netgear WGT624 Wireless Router - meaning this is an easy router to have.

Motorola Surfboard SB5101 Cable Modem Review

Motorola Surfboard SB5101 Cable Modem
Average Reviews:

We just ordered th SB-5120 from Fry's, and they sent this model instead. The SB-5101 has almost identical specifications, just the case is a little different, and I guess the 5120 includes TurboDOCS software. We previously had an old Toshiba, which has given stellar service for 5 years, but we decided it was time to replace it before it failed. The Motorola Surfboard was very easy to install, just plug in the ethernet cable to the router (or to your PC), connect the coaxial cable and plug in the power. There is no need to install software or drivers unless you want to use a USB connection. We also had to call Cox Highspeed Internet to give their tech support the new serial number and MAC address of the new cable modem (the Cox website neglects to tell you this step). That was the hardest part of the whole process - it took about 20 minutes, taking into account resetting and rebooting the system at their request. I am not sure that this modem is any faster than the old one, but we have a low signal on our line to start with.
Overall it was very easy to set up and has been fast and reliable. It plays nicely with our router, and has caused no problems in constant daily use on a home network with 4 computers.

This router will work with the Sierra AirCard 875 on the AT&T network.
It has a problem delivering full 3G speed however. I cannot get over
900Kb/sec even when parked 400 ft. from the tower. Plugged into the computer, I get 2.8Mb/sec speed, same location.
The problems people are having getting this router to work on an AirCard 875 is that they must set the router up *before* inserting the aircard.
The "APN" entries must be entered correctly for proper operation. Choose "Custom" for your entries. There are two entries that must be made correctly, one is "ISP.CINGULAR" if you were a Cingular customer, and the other is the logon username; "WEP@CINGULAR.COM." If these two settings are correct, save settings, unplug router, inset AirCard, re-power router and all will work correctly. The firmware revision number of the AirCard is of no consequence as I updated my firmware to the Australian 7.2Mb/sec version with no change in performance or connectivity problems. The 4 port switch section performs at 100Mb/sec just as advertised. This router can be configured as an internet backup. A person with DSL or cable can connect that signal to the "internet" port in back of the router and it will route that source. If the DSL or cable fails, it will automatically switch to the AirCard. This router auto-disconnects the AirCard in a 'non-use' time you select, and will auto-connect on demand. This takes care of AT&T's rule against maintaining an "always on" connection (forbidden).
"IMPORTANT" If you were using your AirCard 875 in a notebook/laptop computer... The last speed/network setting you used will remain in the AirCard! If you were using the "Edge" network and then plug AirCard into the router, it will only connect to the Edge network! Select 3G in your laptop before removing the card for use in the router! (if you have 3G available, otherwise , leave set to what works in your area).
I know I went on a bit here, but someone with an AirCard 875 may question purchasing this router if they don't know first that it WILL work, and how to make it work because right out of the box, it won't work. You must enter your provider particulars first!

Linksys has a good reputation for making quality products and this is no exception. I would buy it again.

Subject to customer authorization by Linksys. The Linksys Wireless-G Router for Mobile Broadband is really three devices in one box. First, there is the Wireless Access Point, which lets you connect both screaming fast Wireless-G (802.11g at 54Mbps) and Wireless-B (802.11b at 11Mbps) devices to the network. Second, it is a built-in 4-port full-duplex 10/100 Switch to connect your wired-Ethernet devices together. Connect four PCs directly or attach more hubs and switches to create as big a network as you need. Thirdly, the Router function ties it all together and lets your whole network share a mobile broadband Internet connection (requires a mobile broadband data card). Alternatively, you can also connect a cable or DSL modem to the Ethernet port and access the Internet via your available broadband service.

Cisco-Linksys WRT300N Wireless-N Broadband Router Review

Cisco-Linksys WRT300N Wireless-N Broadband Router
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The WRT300N works flawlessly "out of the box" in wired configuration. It does not work at all "out of the box" in wireless mode.
Now, having made that harsh statement as if it would apply to every user in every case, some qualification is certainly in order.
I unpacked the router and took extreme care to follow the setup instructions PRECISELY.
I was connected to the internet the second I finished running the configuration utility from the installation CD - but the catch is that the setup utility has to be run with an ethernet cable connected.
Once I removed the cable and tried to connect to the internet in wireless mode - the end of the line had arrived. There was no connection. Period.
I could connect to the router via its built in config (HTTP) utility and I could ping the default gateway (in the router) but I could not get past that point.
After a couple of hours of fruitless trial and error, I gave up and called Linksys tech support. You know what that means - you get to talk to a person who knows next to nothing about computers or routers. But, they do have their scripts to follow and if you are patient with them and endure the mindless, mostly just plain useless instructions they give you and don't offend them, they will eventually let you talk to a Tier Two person who actually does know something about routers.
To end a very long story with a quick summation, after reaching the aforementioned Tier Two person, I learned that there are arcane, obscure settings buried deep within the router's config menus that you will never find without help (and even if you did find them by accident, there is no chance you would know what to do with them). After changing 5 of those settings, the wireless functionality magically worked and I was connected.
The router is fast. My cable provider only grants me 8 megabit service and the router handles that with ease - wireless or wired.
This would be a 4 or 5 star appliance if it arrived on your desktop with working settings. I doubt that anyone who is not a Linksys or Cisco Systems engineer will actually be able to get it to work in wireless mode without a call to Linksys tech support - unless those units manufactured more recently than mine (April 2006) are shipped with valid settings.
Normal users can stop reading here, but for those who are interested in the technical details, here is a summary of the settings I had to modify in order to get the thing to work:
Router web admin page - Applications & Gaming - QOS - Enable "WMM" and Enable "No Acknowledgement" (the factory default settings are "Not Enabled")
Router Admin Page - Wireless - Advanced Wireless Settings - "Fragmentation Threshold" was changed to 2304. "RTS Threshold" was also changed to 2304. The "Beacon Interval" was reduced to 50 from its factory default value of 100.
Here are a couple of sincere questions for you. Even if you are a "Power User" would it have occurred to you to check your Beacon, RTS and WMM settings, among others, when you realized that you did not have wireless connectivity? If you say "yes," would you really have known WHAT settings to replace the defaults with?
Other than that, it's a really nice router.
**Update 5/21/06**
After using the router for a few days now, I have some follow-up comments to make. Several times a day my laptop will "lose" its IP assignment from the router. Right-clicking the wireless connection in the systray and electing to "repair" the connection restores the IP address, but that is a real bother and it should not be necessary. This never happened with the wireless router I replaced with the WRT300N. I suspect Linksys will be releasing a series of firmware updates for this model until they finally get all the "quirks" (let's not call them bugs) worked out.

Finally, the Routerfunction ties it all together and lets your whole network share a high-speed cable or DSL Internetconnection. With Wireless-N, the farther away you are, the more speed advantage you get. It works great withstandard Wireless-G and -B equipment, but when both ends of the wireless link are Wireless-N,the router can increase the throughput even more by using twice as much radio band, yieldingspeeds up to 12 times as fast as standard Wireless-G. But unlike other speed-enhancedtechnologies, Wireless-N can dynamically enable this double-speed mode for Wireless-N devices, while still connecting to other wireless devices at their respective fastest speeds.

We use one of these for tradeshows to connect multiple computers at the booth and can share the connection with our colleagues in other booths. When the wife and I travel, we can be on the internet on separate laptops. If a client is without internet for whatever reason, this can serve them for a short time days until they are back online.
It's easy to setup and with the firmware update never drops the connection to Sprint.
