Zoom CableModem 5241 - Cable modem - external - USB / Ethernet - 42 Mbps Review

Zoom CableModem 5241 - Cable modem - external - USB / Ethernet - 42 Mbps
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I used previosly the modem model 5041 over 5 years already. There were issues with connection at first time, but it was solved when I called to my provider (Comcast by the way). Since then I never had any problems with this equipment. I would keep it till it die of the old age but on Dec 14 2009 Comcast upgraded its network so I had to pick new modem from their approved list of modems for 3 days before of marked day. I checked reviews and picked the ZOOM 5241. I have wireless router (linksys 54G) connected to my 5241.
What did I do for setup.
1. Unplugged old modem from power, coaxial and router,
2. Plugged new modem 5241 to his power adapter, coaxial cable and router (with RJ45 connector),
3. Lunched Internet browser (Firefox or IE),
4. I got Comcast page with instructions automatically (It wouldn't let go for another until setup is done),
5. Followed technician instructions (which not require any special skills),
6. Entered my current account number and Comcast shown me all my data including physical and mac addresses. I did not plug in directly from modem to PC. At first Comcast did not pass linksys. I just ignored it and "run diagnostic" (which is just a button) again. Everything was set up automatically. After too reboots I got perfect connections wire and wireless.
Downloading speed jumped up dramatically.
PS. One week later.
Zoom 5241 works now with renewed Comcast network very good. However once I lost connection but because of the my LinkSys 54G wireless router. After I hit reset button on it I got all my connections back. So it was a linksys issue. Right now Zoom + Linksys work flawlessly. And I noticed that downloading speed went up about 10 times faster (Limewire from 15-24 Kbs to 200-500 Kbs - 250 average).
Well 5041 is useless for Comcast IP for today anyway but 5241 works perfect. I picked mine in Fry's Electronics with described above characteristics for $54.
Good luck

Touchstone® Telephony Modem TM602G Review

Touchstone® Telephony Modem TM602G

It's the same model as the one distributed in MA by Comcast so should work and for me with little hassle. The only hassle was that I had to call both Comcast Internet and Voice in order to activate the ethernet and telephone plugs on the modem. Tried to get the TM402P I also got from Amazon and it wouldn't connect without a Comcast technician coming over (for $30). Anyway this eMTA is lighter than the Scientific Atlanta or that other Arris model and in my opinion looks better (sleek and not boxy). The technician that came over to set up the Comcast provided TM602G told me that they were having problems with the scientic atlantas (didn't tell me what, but bought this since it's the same one the technician gave me).

Comcast Netgear Wireless Cable Modem Gateway CG814WG Review

Comcast Netgear Wireless Cable Modem Gateway CG814WG
Average Reviews:

The unit works as expected. I use Comcast which lists this unit as compatible. It was setup and running in seconds with our Unix (Linux) operated computers, the Windows one took a few minutes, better than expected if I may say so.
I like the small design, woud rather have it standing straight up, mine did not come with supporting legs.
There is no power switch on the unit, it stays on all the time. Not only a waste of energy and additional wear on the unit, it also makes the network visible all day.
Bottom line: It is a more affordable product and works fine. No need to go go DOCSIS 3 as in my case my provider does not have it setup yet. I recommend to check with your provider first before spending money on DOCSIS 3. Same with wireless "N", no need for it if you are not setup yet, that includes the computers you are about to connect as well.

SURFboard SB5101 DOCSIS 2.0 Data Modem Review

SURFboard SB5101 DOCSIS 2.0 Data Modem
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)

I bought the Motorola Surfboard 5101 a couple of weeks ago on Amazon. Think they must have gotten a new vendor because the price was about $15 cheaper and there were hundreds of reviews for this cable modem.

I just wanted to point out some things that I picked up from the other reviews. I am a Comcast customer and I wanted to avoid paying the $3/month rental charge for their RCA modem. When I connected the 5101 even though I had all green lights I still had no internet connection. That is because you have to call Comcast and tell them your new MAC ID number that is shown on the modem. This is not pointed out anywhere in the instructions. The Comcast tech did not ask for my serial number. After a few minutes he made the change and said everything was OK.

I rebooted the modem and computer but I still could not connect to the net. I remembered from other reviews that it takes about ten or fifteen minutes for the change to take place. After 15 minutes I rebooted everything and I had my internet connection.

Also there is no mention that the 5101 works with Vista. Thought I might have to download some drivers but I didn't. It works just fine with Vista.

After two weeks the 5101 modem has been working with no problems. I do use that Standby button when I am not connected to the net just because all those green lights are a distraction.

Hope this helps.

Motorola Surfboard SB5101 Cable Modem Review

Motorola Surfboard SB5101 Cable Modem
Average Reviews:

We just ordered th SB-5120 from Fry's, and they sent this model instead. The SB-5101 has almost identical specifications, just the case is a little different, and I guess the 5120 includes TurboDOCS software. We previously had an old Toshiba, which has given stellar service for 5 years, but we decided it was time to replace it before it failed. The Motorola Surfboard was very easy to install, just plug in the ethernet cable to the router (or to your PC), connect the coaxial cable and plug in the power. There is no need to install software or drivers unless you want to use a USB connection. We also had to call Cox Highspeed Internet to give their tech support the new serial number and MAC address of the new cable modem (the Cox website neglects to tell you this step). That was the hardest part of the whole process - it took about 20 minutes, taking into account resetting and rebooting the system at their request. I am not sure that this modem is any faster than the old one, but we have a low signal on our line to start with.
Overall it was very easy to set up and has been fast and reliable. It plays nicely with our router, and has caused no problems in constant daily use on a home network with 4 computers.

I tried both Motorola SB6120 and Zoom5341. I have Comcast blast internet and Speakeasy test shows download speed 23.5 MBps with Motorola SB6120, 24.8 MBps with Zoom5341, so I decided to stay with Zoom5341. Installation takes around 30 minutes, you need to call to Comcast and give them modem MAC Address.

Purchased yesterday and set it up without any problems. It is now compatible with Comcast. This was an issue previously, but Comcast has now certified its use. Performance is great and very convenient having build in wireless, no need for a separate router, especially if you are mostly wireless, which my family is. I also ran several speed tests and got up to 20Mbps download and 3.4Mbps upload. Very pleased and a dramatic improvement from my older Comcast supplied Scientific Atlanta Modem. Highly recommended!!

Motorola SURFboard Gateway SBG6580 DOCSIS 3.0 Wireless Cable Modem Review

Motorola SURFboard Gateway SBG6580 DOCSIS 3.0 Wireless Cable Modem
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
When evaluating this type of equipment, one must differentiate between the device itself and other factors that can impact its performance. Blaming the manufacturer for issues likely caused by one's ISP is akin to saying, "I can't get past third gear because of all this construction on the highway... I'll never buy a Jaguar again!"
That said, the SBG6580 is a solid piece of kit.
This latest addition to the SURFboard line combines a DOCSIS 3 cable modem with a gigabit switch and a dual-antenna 802.11n wireless access point, providing all the networking equipment a home office needs in a single compact package... this amounts to a single point of failure, but that's par for the residential course. It can deliver 42 mbps downstream on a single channel (which my provider brands "Lightning") with support for eight bonded channels... meaning that when the day comes that ISPs start selling triple-digit speeds, this gateway won't need to be replaced.
Wi-Fi performance has been comparable to my old draft n router with similar range and throughput in a mixed mode environment. What sets the SBG6580 apart are its better indicator lights and superior configuration utility which offers some settings normally found only on enterprise-grade equipment. Those less inclined to tinker should know that push-button support is provided; once the cable guy finished with the wall outlet, setup took less than five minutes.
Finally, one word of caution: the SBG6580 needs airflow. I originally placed it flush against a similarly-sized backup hard drive on my desk and found the unit hot to the touch after a few hours. To avoid problems, do not block the vents.

ASUS Black Diamond Dual Band Processor, Hardware NAT, 5 Internal Antennas, Fast Gigabit Ethernet and 128MB DDR2 Wireless Router (RT-N56U) Review

ASUS Black Diamond Dual Band Processor, Hardware NAT, 5 Internal Antennas, Fast Gigabit Ethernet and 128MB DDR2 Wireless Router (RT-N56U)

I recently purchased two other routers before purchasing this one to replace an older 2.4ghz router. The first router I purchased was the newly released Cisco Linksys E4200. I ended up returning it because I barely had a signal downstairs and slow output. My previous router usually had around 70%-80% signal downstairs however the E4200 would quickly lose signal the farther I moved away from the router. I purchased as a replacement the highly rated Netgear WNDR3700. This router had much better signal however it would not work with my external hard drive. Per review of online comments and Netgear's own website, the 3700 has issues being compatible with numerous external hard drives. Netgear has posted on their website about a dozen compatible hard drives that work with the 3700. I had the choice to either keep the 3700 and fork out another $50-$100 on a new external hard drive that would work or purchase another router with similar features. I ran across the Asus at my local electronic store. I never heard of this model before since it is a new release. Before I decided to purchase it, I went home and read the limited reviews I could find on it. Both expert and consumer reviews were positive. I ended up purchasing the Asus. I was completely blown away by the features and performance of this router. I have over 90% signal downstairs. My laptop is maintaining 230-270mbps connection when I am downstairs (about 30 feet away from router which is upstairs) which was impossible with both the E4200 and 3700. The user interface provides significant amount more custom options than both the Netgear and Cisco. My external HDD (Seagate) was instantly recognized by the router. I also found the wired connection runs smoother and faster than the 3700. The 3700 had a delay at times loading pages. Overall this is in my opinion the best performing router that I have ever owned. Currently the WNDR3700 is considered the best but it has been out for a while now. The Cisco E4200 claims to be the best however I disagree with this due to real hands-on experience with it. There is a good amount of owner complaints already being posted about the E4200 which is similar to issues that I also encountered. The only bad thing I found with this unit is that it does not allow wall mount option. For the price, performance and features, this is an excellent value and steal.
