Zoom X5 2/2+ Retail Modem/ Gate Router/firewall 4-PORT Switch USB E Review

Zoom X5 2/2+ Retail Modem/ Gate Router/firewall 4-PORT Switch USB E
Average Reviews:

The modem works very well for me. It autoconfigured without a hitch and I was up and running at noticeably faster speeds than with my old Actiontec in a matter of minutes. The trouble is, that in those couple of minutes, the thing had already heated up to a surface temperature of around 110 degrees F! That's warm enough that you could get a reasonable first-degree burn if you left your hand on there for a while. I contacted Zoom to see if this was normal and they were very cordial, but did confirm that this particular model (the X5) runs very hot.
In general, the hotter a piece of electronics runs, the less reliable it will be and the shorter its life span will be. Given this, I decided to return the modem and order a Zoom 5615 to replace it. Their rep assured me it would run cooler, but I'll leave a review on that page, too, when it arrives to see if that verdict is true. (Basically, they're the same modem, but the 5615 doesn't have a built-in 4-port switch, which I don't need anyway since I'm hooking it up to a separate wireless router.)
Update: The 5615 takes longer to heat up, but still runs at a worrisome temperature. It was also significantly harder to set up. If you're willing to take the risk on the heat, the 5660 model X3 Dsl 2/2+ Modem/router/gatew would probably be the best bang for the buck. I wish I'd seen it before I ordered the 5615.

Cisco-Linksys WGA54AG Game Adapter 802.11A/G 54 Mbps Review

Cisco-Linksys WGA54AG Game Adapter 802.11A/G 54 Mbps
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
At $50, it's a steal for what this product does, right? Well, sort of... I purchased this device in order to allow my desktop machine to run Linux and connect wirelessly to my Netgear wireless router, thus bypassing all of the issues with wireless and Linux. I expected a nice setup process; connect the adapter to my NIC, configure some properties, and be off and running. I was wrong. Wrong in the form of a three hour session of head-versus-keyboard style troubleshooting. Hopefully this review will shed some light on this mysterious device.
Let's just get it out of the way that Linksys's customer support is nonexistant. Forget trying to call them. Also, the provided documentation is submoronic at best, and provides absolutely no information on troubleshooting. I had to figure everything out myself.
This thing is a nightmare to configure. I unpacked the unit, connected the power, and plugged into my NIC. Interestingly enough, my computer didn't automatically obtain an IP. After checking my TCP/IP settings, I reconnected and power cycled the thing a few times. Still no dice. As my frustration was building, it mysteriously connected! Awesome! I got no further than logging into the web interface, and it disconnected as mysteriously as it connected. I have no idea why it was designed like this, but it seems that you need to have a preexisting wireless connection for the thing to connect using DHCP!! The manual vaguely suggested plugging the thing into a router, so I tried that. Not only did I not connect, but my router wigged out several times, requiring me to restart it.
I finally figured out how to resolve all of these problems. It seems that since I have a netgear router, and the game adapter uses a static IP that is not in the router's DHCP range, this device behaves erratically when hard wired to the router. So...
1. Before doing anything, even before unpacking the adapter, log into your router and make sure your DHCP range is set to use IP's 192.168.1.2 to 192.168.1.254. Most default router setups (except for Linksys of course) use 192.168.0.x, and this will simply not work.
2. Pray, then plug the adapter into a free port on your router. Nothing horrible should happen yet, so open up a browser and http on over to 192.168.1.250. You should get a login screen, so go ahead and leave the user name blank, and "Admin" for the password.
3. The configuration interface is horrible. Straightforward, but horrible. The "Scan" feature only works half of the time, so you may have to refresh the page a few times before it works. Here, connect to your wireless network by SSID. It should say "Setting Successful," at which point you can unplug the adapter. It will very likely crash your router due to connecting thru wireless at the same time as wired. There are some other options to play around with, but whatever you do, DON'T ENABLE DHCP. Everything else should work as configured unless you have WEP, in which case you're on your own.
4. At this point, you should be able to plug the adapter into the intended computer, and it should work.
Since I got it working, it's been a great little adapter. It's very robust and does everything I need it to. Here are some thoughts on getting it working without having to violate your router:
Since the adapter requires there to be a wireless signal present in order to log in using a standalone computer, you may be able to connect directly to it with a crossover cable. When connecting with a crossover, you have to manually specify an IP. Anything in the 192.168.1.x range should work, subnet 255.255.255.0, no default gateway or DNS servers. Using this method, you should be able to access the web configurator to set the adapter up. I recommend that you change the IP to one in your router's default IP range. Also, you can play with WEP. Again, don't enable DHCP, or your day will get a lot worse. Trust me on this.

Belkin F5D6230-3 Wireless Cable/DSL Router Review

Belkin F5D6230-3 Wireless Cable/DSL Router
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
$129.99 is a "hot buy"????
I bought this on clearance from the Belkin website 2 months ago for $30.
I wouldn't even recommend it at that price.
The firewall will not close off everything it leaves "port 0" open no matter what. And the only way to stealth port 80 is by redirecting it to a fake ip address.
It also slows down such that browsing the web becomes an excruciatingly slow experience. The only way to fix it is to unplug the power and plug it back in whenever it goes slow. I have read reports that turning off the router's DHCP server might prevent that from happening... but DHCP is not something you should have to do without.
This is an out of date product. Badly put together. Definitely not worth what Amazon is asking for it.
Try to find a good deal on a Linksys or something... do not walk, RUN away from Belkin products.

I have had this modem for about 5 years and it is very durable. I have put 100's of terabytes through this modem and it is still going strong. The wireless is great also, because you dont need a seperate router. It even has WPA-PSK encryption, and a firewall. Would purchase from actiontec again.

Zoom 5590-00-03 125MBPS ADSL Modem / Wireless Router Review

Zoom 5590-00-03 125MBPS ADSL Modem / Wireless Router
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
When my DSL modem died, I went to the store to discover this hardware combo. What an excellent device to include the 4-port WIRELESS switch/router with the DSL modem! Less hardware, less cables, more simplistic. I have a mixed PC/Mac environment and used the PC for setup since the included CD didn't mention anything about Macs. The install assistant was worthless. It actually just shows you photos of which cables go where, then it makes you restart the PC! There is an extensive .pdf manual on the CD, and if you pop the disc into you Mac, you'll find the English version of it in the "Mac" folder. - Along with with a "Glossary" .pdf and a "Support" .pdf. So while I do wish Zoom included good old fashioned paper versions of these, they did do a good job of including all of this on the CD, but you do have to look!
Luckily, Zoom did include a small sheet of paper showing the IP address, user ID & password needed to access the settings through a web browser. I found the setup to be pretty straight forward and the setup menus are laid out well. The menus are completely different from Linksys, but very easy to navigate. When it was all setup and done, my Mac & PC were talking to each other, but I still wasn't connected to the Internet. After calling SBC/ATT I spoke with a rep who admitted they didn't officially support any modems that aren't sold by ATT, but he took a stab at my settings anyway. It turned out that I needed my full SBC email address as the user ID, not just the first portion. The second I saved the settings, I connected to the internet!
I also found the WEP security settings very easy to setup and a nice strong signal emitting from the X6. Once the device is setup, you can virtually forget about it. I can't speak for this devices longevity yet, but it's nice knowing it has a 2-year warranty.
One thing missing on the back of this unit (like many current routers) is an UPLINK jack to daisy chain this into another router if necessary. Being that this is designed for a home/small office environment, it's probably not a big deal for most users who will never need to upgrade beyond 4 ports.
I think networking gear reviews need to be taken with a grain of salt. Most of us (myself included) are NOT network professionals. Networking computers is considered by many, to be the hardest thing to do in I-T. Since it is a complicated scenario, many people I believe make the mistake of blaming the hardware, when many times, they have incorrect settings or software issues causing them to pull their hair out. Overall, I think networking companies are doing an excellent job making equipment that can now be installed by the average Joe. 10 or 15 years ago, that was unheard of.

I set one of these up for my father in law. The only issue I had was with his ATT DSL user account password. The device would not accept his password that he had used on his ATT 2Wire modem. It simply wouldn't allow it. It kept generating a "Passwords must be in ASCI characters" error message. We called ATT. They were both helpful and patient; they seem trained only to support the 2Wire modem, but they hung with me for over an hour while I got this worked out. They reset the password and generated a new one and within 15 minutes I was on the Internet. When I went to the ATT user account site to change to a new user generated password, the Trendnet modem would not accept the change. The same ASCI character error message. ATT reset the password and generated another new one for me. The modem accepted it and I was online again. Another attempt to setup a user defined password failed again. ATT gave me another new password and I was online quickly again. I gave up on trying to change it.
As far as speed, my father in law reports a noticeable improvement over the 2Wire we replaced.
As far as features, this device has more than I understand. It has all the latest technologies and is quite configurable. It has switches to toggle Power and WPS and Wireless funtions on the back.
The settings for ATT DSL are:
Connection to Configure: (VC 1)
Connection Method: (Manual)
VPI: (0)
VCI: (35)
Internet login: (PPPoE)
DSL Multiplexing: (LLC mode)
PPPoE login name: (your primary email address)
PPPoe Password: (your primary email password...this is where I had trouble)
I have set up Zoom and USRobotic modem routers with less frustration, but the improved speed warrants four stars for this device. I got it for under $100 at a local retailer.
Update: I am adding the following solution provided by another, more savvy, user. Thanks "OS".
"This modem has some faulty code that does not allow you to use your regular SBC/ATT dsl username/password. The fix is to download the latest firmware patch from Trendnet. Look up this model on the Trendnet website and go to their downloads link. You will see the firmware update that specifically addresses the "Passwords must be in ASCI characters" error everyone seems to be getting when trying to enter their DLS credentials into the router config screens. Download the firmware (which comes with instructions) and install it on the modem. After the firmware is installed, reboot the device and that particular input page will now work as intended. I've done a few Google searches and am amazed that no one has posted this. The patch has been out since May of 09."

I have used Netgear, Belkin and Linksys routers in the past and had no end of issues, the netgear one blew up and during its life required constant reboots, the wireless LAN on the Linksys kept turning itself off, an issue occuring on multiple units, and the Belkin router would not support my work's VPN. I bought a US Robotics router as back when i bought my first 14.4K modem it was reliable. This rounter lasted for about 2 years until i dropped it when moving house. I remember reading somewhere that 3Com had bought US Robotics so decided to go for this one. 2 years with it only requiring rebooting 3 times made me decide to get one once i moved to the US, 4 months and it still has not required a reboot. The firewall rules are easy to setup and use.
if you are looking for a router you can set up and never think about, get this one.

Actiontec GT704WG 54Mbps Wireless-G DSL Gateway Modem Review

Actiontec GT704WG 54Mbps Wireless-G DSL Gateway Modem
Average Reviews:

I bought this when getting Qwest DSL. The only problem I've had (so far) was on Qwest's side, where my phone wasn't wired for DSL when they said it would be. A (free) service call by a tech. fixed that very quickly.
As far as the modem itself goes, everything works. I've tested the ethernet ports and they get approx 100mbs. I also enabled the wireless part and got a 4-bar signal on my laptop three rooms away. Wireless was about 11mbs. The documentation was a little thin on how to set it up, but the Qwest hotline walked me through it. The modem also included a short sheet for configuring wireless.
UPDATE: I had been using VPN with my dialup service. When I got DSL, VPN would no longer work. The users guide said to contact Qwest to enable VPN pass-through, but they were not helpful. They suggested contacting Actiontec, where it was suggested I contact a group that charges per call. I decided to poke around somemore, and discovered that turning the modem Firewall Security setting from "low" to "off", VPN would start working. You'd think that somebody would have known about that...
UPDATE: This modem usually works fine for weeks at a time, but once in a while it loses its internet connection. This prompts a troubleshooting wizard to pop up. In my experience the wizard doesn't usually fix anything, and sometimes makes things worse. The best thing I've found is to turn the modem off, wait 10-20 seconds, and turn it on again. This reboot usually gets the "internet" light on the modem to turn green in about 30 seconds. I think the problem is on the Qwest side of things.
UPDATE: The problem of dropping the internet connection seemed to be happening more frequently. The modem firmware was W04; I found version W06 on the Qwest website and decided to upgrade to see if that would help. This was a mistake, as the upgrade process hung & rendered the modem useless. DOH! I now have a new modem, and will see if that helps.

This thing works fine, and this review is less of a review than a cautionary tale. I purchased this fine piece of equipment and got it all hooked up and nothing happened. No internets! omg plz!
Turns out I had to adjust the settings of the modem which is fairly easy if you are a computer geek, but for me it was a bit of a challenge. D-Link support refused to help me on the basis that all they would help me with was knowing how to plug it in and making sure the unit was not defective. They suggested I talk to my ISP.

My ISP would not tell me the VCI/VCP needed but luckily the modem found that on its own using the WAN Wizard setup, however I had to manually adjust a few settings before it would work, settings that neither my ISP or D-Link support knew anything about when I asked them. I did manage to get it to work but I nearly had to send it back and buy a modem of the same brand that my ISP requires.
So in short, this thing works as it should, but I recommend you consult with your ISP prior to purchasing a modem to determine which brands they do support so as not to have to deal with d-link support.

500 Mw Wireless Router (b+g) Review

500 Mw Wireless Router (b+g)

I never got this device to work properly. But it will likely work fine for you.
This device doesn't seem to work with the MTU (Maximum Transmission Units) provided from Windstream DSL. The MTU setting is NOT adjustable on this system. I had to send it back.
The problem was that certain sites ([...]) would act as if they were 'blocked' while others (e.g. picassaweb) were fine. VERY odd.
But it was SUPER to talk to service techs on the phone who were nice, spoke clearly, and easy to understand. They definitely tried to help me.
So if you're using Windstream (my sympathies) this system may not work.

Netgear MR814 802.11b Wireless 4-Port Cable/DSL Router Review

Netgear MR814 802.11b Wireless 4-Port Cable/DSL Router
Average Reviews:

I've replaced my Linksys BEFW11S4 router with Netgear MR814, and I have not been disappointed. MR814 has a better range, better user interface, and several features missing from the Linksys model.
Setup was very easy - Netgear setup wizard even recognized the type of the broadband connection I have (PPPoE-based DSL). The manual includes a handy table with settings for many US ISPs. Wireless LAN was also up and running in no time.
I have no complains about the router operation so far. It's does not drop my PPPoE connection, and is generally *not noticeable* - just like a router should be.
Features that make this router stand out in the crowded field of wireless routers: 24x7 tech support and 3yr. warranty, parental controls plus free Zero Knowledge Freedom Personal Firewall software (one-year license for up to 8 computers), and ability to update your dynamic ip address in DynDNS.org database automatically (very handy if you need to connect to your home computer).
The only downside I can think of is the size. The unit is larger than many comparable routers, although it is not as tall as others, and can be positioned vertically with the included stand, or mounted on the wall.

Qwest Actiontec PK5000 DSL Modem 4 Port Wireless Router Review

I bought this from Qwest and wasted at least an hour trying to get it set up to stream to my Xbox 360. It turns out that this device doesn't support multicast, which what the Xbox needs for media streaming, so it's worthless to me. (Do a search for "PK5000 Xbox multicast" to see what I mean.) I've read that other technologies, such as Apple's Bonjour, use multicast as well, so if you intend to use this device for network streaming, look elsewhere. Now I've got to return this to Qwest and find a better modem.

Zoom ADSL X6 5590 - Wireless router - DSL - 4-port switch - ATM - 802.11b/g - desktop Review

I worked for a small ISP/Telephone Company and this is the modem we installed in every new DSL install we performed. We sold several speeds of DSL over the years from 1.0Mbps to 12Mbps. Once our service hit 3Mbps standard the older modems would die from overheating. These Zoom's never had any issues. Company wide in several thousand installs over three years I had to replace around 6 of these and most of the time the problem was determined to have been a lightening strike. Since leaving the company a couple of years ago, I have used my x6 as a wireless router since all we can get is cable broadband. I disabled the DHCP to allow my cable modem to handle that task and it has worked like a charm and saved me the $50 or so for a stand alone wireless router. Every few months our Wii won't connect and we have to reset the modem. This is most likely a Wii issue since the easiest way to get a new IP assigned to the Wii is to just reset the router. My only issue is now the wireless G technology is outdated by N, but I've never had any issues even with the Wii, a couple of laptops and a Wifi enabled cell phone connected. We even stream Netflix over this thing on a regular basis and never have any issues other than the occasional blip probably on the Netflix side. I'm not sure where all the negative comments come from, but I've had a great experience. To top it off, the last firmware update was in fact October of 2008 and the website is still up.
