D-Link DWL-M60AT 6dBi Directional Indoor Antenna Review

D-Link DWL-M60AT 6dBi Directional Indoor Antenna
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
For those that want something to improve the range of their Wireless Access Point (WAP) / wireless router then what you need is an *omni* directional antenna.
This is not what you're looking for. This is a directional antenna, in very simple terms, you'd add to something like a wireless network card, or some other wireless device and point it very specifically in the *direction* of your wireless access point / wireless router.
In my case I have a wireless router, and a number of wireless network clients, one of which is a D-Link DSM-520 HD media player. My problem was, according to the site survey functionality on the DSM-520, I was only seeing a connection level of between 40-50.
My solution was to replace the two 2 dBi antennas on my 802.11g SMC Barricade 2804WBR route with two 8 dBi omni-directional antennas to increase the overall range on my wireless network (site survey on the DSM-520 went from 40-50 range to about 70), and then this product, the D-Link DWL-M60AT 6dBi to replace the 2dBi antenna on the back of my DSM-520 HD media player. On adding this the site survey showed (to my pleasant surprise) a perfect and consistent 100 level.
I highly recommend this product if you want to increase the connection level of a single wireless device to your wireless network. If, however, you wish to increase the overal range of your wireless network then I recommend that you purchase an omni-directional antenna.

NETGEAR WG111T Super-G Wireless USB 2.0 Adapter Review

NETGEAR WG111T Super-G Wireless USB 2.0 Adapter
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Although, this is a great deal: easy to setup, easy to install, easy to reset, etc., it does contain many problems.
One problem is that it heats up to quickly, mainly because its through USB, and USB travels really quick, especially if you are running a USB 2.0 port instead of 1.1 port.
Another main problem is that it doesn't function well unless you have a netgear router. I got a new router when I renewed my Verizon contract, and decided to get this so I could network my two comptuers without having to open it up. Often times it says that network is unavailable, even though the adapter is receiving fine. When I bought a Netgear router, it worked flawlessly, but if you don't have a netgear router, its a hassle.
The size is overall good, and you can either plug it in directly to the USB, or have a cord so that you can wrap it around or hang it on the side of your computer. Netgear has great customer support, even though their lines are often full the wait time is long, they are always there.
I've only had one for 2 months, but so far, it really hasn't given me any problems. Just make sure when your not using it, to unplug it, or it will heat up and wear quicker.

Wireless networking is constantly evolving, and the need for increasingly faster speeds and greater range is not only sought after, but expected. If better wireless speed and range with consistent wireless connections is what you're looking for, then NETGEAR has you covered with the WG111T Super-G Wireless USB 2.0 Adapter. With this handy device you'll have no more dropped connections, and you can kiss dead spots goodbye.
If you love all the new media applications, such as video and music streaming, you know you need a wireless connection that operates at lightning quick speeds to keep things running smooth. These new applications are nearly impossible with the old 802.11b wireless protocol, but they are certainly attainable with increased wireless speeds. The WG111T delivers the speed you desire. At 108 Mbps, it is up to ten times faster than 802.11b, and extends your network coverage up to four times more than standard Wireless-G protocol.
NETGEAR also helps you keep it simple with an easy-to-use, intuitive USB 2.0 interface. Just plug the WG111T into the external USB slot of your desktop or notebook PC, and you'll be ready to connect. Plus, you can keep your network private with WEP encryption, and this diminutive device is even upgradeable to the more secure WPA encryption (Wi-Fi Protected Access).
Setup is made quick and easy with the Smart Wizard install software. The WG111T has a compact, pocket-sized casing and with the included five foot USB cable, you can place this device near your computer for optimal signal strength for the best performance.
System requirements include a Pentium class PC, an available USB port, two MB of free hard drive space, and Microsoft Windows Vista, XP or 2000. Microsoft Vista drivers are available at www.netgear.com/vista.
What's in the Box NETGEAR WG111T Super-G Wireless USB 2.0 Adapter, USB cable, installation guide, setup CD, cradle and Velcro, and warranty/support information card.

Belkin Wireless 2-Port Print Srvr. ( F1UP0001 ) Review

Belkin Wireless 2-Port Print Srvr. ( F1UP0001 )
Average Reviews:

I spent lots of time with old ethernet/parallel print servers that wouldn't quite work with GDI and other low cost printers.
I was skeptical that this would work.
I was impressed that this print server worked with an easy 5 minute guided setup on my Minolta 1250W GDI printer.
The range of the wireless (Im using B, not G) is fine (covers whole floor of large home).
This device is an excellent solution for putting 2 USB printers anywhere you want them without dealing with the 16ft limitation of USB, or having to run any ethernet or parallel wires.
(I don't have to cut and run any wires in my new home). Plus
you get added bonus of having a normal cheap ($100~) printer
become a networked printer for all to share. (and you don't
have to have the original host computer on to print, as you
would with USB.)

Hawking Technology Hi-Gain 6dB Omni-Directional Wireless Antenna (HAI6SIP) Review

Hawking Technology Hi-Gain 6dB Omni-Directional Wireless Antenna (HAI6SIP)
Average Reviews:

Hooked the H-A16SIP to my Linksys WRT54GC. The antenna connections are compatible. No extra part needed. Defintely helped with my two major issues. I now have connectivity in former dead zones and those annoying Windows system tray connect/disconnect messages have stopped. I tried three routers (Linksys, SMC, Apple), none improved the connectivity as much as adding on a H-A16SIP.
While this device helped me, it clearly doesn't help everyone. Only buy from a place that will accept a return.

Hawking HWU8DD Hi-Gain USB Wireless-G Dish Adapter Review

Hawking HWU8DD Hi-Gain USB Wireless-G Dish Adapter
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
(see my latest update at bottom)
We purchased this unit to try out on vacation at a beach house rental where typically we have to connect to neighborhood hot spots. At best we usually have to manipulate our laptop to just the right position to find a sporadic at best connection (you know-- we're ultimately standing on our head, wearing a foil helmet, and holding the laptop on edge etc-- that kind of thing).
I'll have to report back to you from the beach house next week but right now I just pulled it out of the box in our urban neighborhood setting at home. We typically have an abundance of signals here but only 1 or 2 have been connectable using my Netgear Rangemax 240 (which does better than my other standard b/g wireless adapter cards).
The Hi-Gain picks up a ton of signals in each direction I point it and is able to connect to nearly anything with a signal strength of 20% or better.
The Quick Start guide warns you all over the place to be gentle when moving the antenna on its axis or swivel, so comments from others on fragility seem to be correct. It looks like for travel purposes you'll need to keep it packaged in its box (6"x8"x4")
But I'd have to say-- so far so good. I have no immediate criticism or disappointment, other than the Wireless LAN Utility has a somewhat undersized window showing available network info--but this is a small issue.
I'll report back from the beach house next week to share what our final verdict is.
Oh the USB cord is no more than 6 feet long so you will need an extension or a longer USB cord (I ordered a 10' extension for $8). By the way, if you intend to replace the USB cord rather than use an extension, it uses a mini-USB connector (the type you see on cameras and camcorders-- your standard connector as you see on printer will not work.
-----------------------------------------------
AUGUST 4TH BEACH HOUSE UPDATE
As promised, here is a bit more after a week of trying it out. The good news is it does consistently work. The ability to move the dish around to locate the best signal is a big plus when you are in some remote area. I am currently connected solidly to a site about 1/2 mile away across a Bay (I have a clear line of sight) with 2 of 5 signal strength bars illuminated.
We just repeated a download speed test and confirmed the wireless connection at 4861kbs down and about 420kbs up.
To be honest though, I'd say the HWU8DD appears only slightly more sensitive than my current pcmcia adapter, a Netgear Rangemax 240 (WPNT511). Again the advantage here is the ability to move the dish to the best reception spot rather than manipulate the computer itself.
Again, the short length of the USB cord (about 5') means in most cases you really need an extension, but with the 10' USB passive extension we also purchased from Amazon, I'm able to sit where I want to and let the antenna do its work. The bad news is I have a cord draped across the floor which may drive my wife a bit nuts at times.
We also discovered this is not compatible with my wife or daughter's Mac (also not compatible with Linux.) I just checked the Hawking website that tells me only Windows Vista 32, XP, 2000, Me, and 98Se are supported with drivers.
Finally, I also have to agree with those who note both size and fragility again. For traveling "road warriors", this is a relatively bulky, and somewhat cheaply made little plastic unit to be taking along on your flights or packed in a car somewhere unless you are desperate. I can see it being totally destroyed in my luggage at the airport, so we won't be taking it along flying to Chicago next week. (Isn't it possible to create a flatter, more compact and durable unit these days?)
Who is this perfect for?
I'd say the RV'er is going to love it. It's great even here at the beach house where we're not worrying about little people playing with or tripping over the cord. At home, I'd hate to be carrying this little thing everywhere my laptop goes, though with a stationary computer, it may be a good solution.
If you've tried everything else, I'd definitely give this a test-drive, but keep in mind the need for a good return policy if you don't like it or if it doesn't work for you.
I'm giving it 4 stars because it does work as promised.
---------------------
Sept 19, 2007 Update: STOPPED WORKING
As mentioned in my review, the dish is somewhat fragile. Yesterday we noticed it quit functioning. Perhaps the box was jostled a bit too much, or the dish popped off its stand once too often (the dish connector pops out of its base sometimes leaving the connecting wire exposed or potentially vulnerable to breaking its solders).
I looked on the Hawking website and am going to try to return it to the manufacturer if I can. I am past the 30 day Amazon return period.
No bitterness, but just a little bit of frustration. Drop my rating to 2 stars.

The AIR802 AP-G250 follows the IEEE 802.11 b/g standards with 54 Mbps and may be easily configured in router, bridge or client modes.
Fantastic CoverageCommon consumer or small business routers (any typical 802.11 b/g or draft-N product), provide 35 to 60 mW of radio frequency (RF) output power. AIR802 is now offering directly to the public its AP-G250 with up to 250 mW output power. As a result, the user experiences a super strong signal capable of providing superior coverage. With improved signal you will achieve better data throughput (speed) throughout your home or office.
Multi-Functional & Easy ConfigurationWhile other manufacturers have elected to build multiple models to achieve different functionality, the AIR802 AP-G250 is very versatile and allows you to configure the device as a router, bridge or client device.
As a router, the AP-G250 might be used directly behind a cable or DSL modem. Alternatively, it might be used as a bridge between a home and detached garage. In client mode, one may use the site survey to view available wireless networks and with a powerful connection remotely connect to another network.
The AP-G250 also provides Universal Repeater mode, which allows one to connect to a remote network and re-broadcast the network. Or use our Wireless Distribution System (WDS) feature to connect multiple radios together via MAC addresses.
Full security encryption techniques, MAC filtering, and firewall features all are ready to keep your wireless network secure. Two Ethernet ports are available, one a combination WAN/LAN and a second LAN port.
Configuration is easily accomplished through a web browser.

I finally gave up on trying to get my Linksys PCI card to work with my ShuttlePC. There is some bizzare conflict somewhere...
As the other reviewers had indicated, this unit works great. Install the driver and then plug in the gadget. The Dlink icon in the system tray gives you status info on the gadget. Clicking on the icon takes you directly to the standard WinXP networking interface, not a proprietary interface that seems to often conflict with what XP is telling you (ie with Linksys products).
The unit also comes with a USB extension adapter/cable in case it is inconvenient to plug the unit directly into your computer's USB port. It is also useful as a means to extend the range of the unit by keeping it away from the metal chassis of your computer.

Note for operating this device under Windows XP Service Pack 2:
Out-of-the-box, this USB device does not play well with other USB devices. Attempting to do an automatic installation of the drivers (having Windows find the drivers on the CD) consistently yields a Windows STOP error, AKA the Blue Screen of Death. So, I was forced to install the companion software from CD. During the installation, the software told me to update to Windows XP Service Pack 1 with a hotfix I already had installed, to correct known USB conflicts. The device would thereafter only connect to a wireless network if it was plugged in at boot-time, and once disconnected, would not reconnect without a reboot. I still had to get updated drivers for the DWL-G132 from Windows Update and install them; now the conflicts seem but a distant memory.
With the correct drivers, this card has actually started working well in a USB 2.0 port. It is notable to mention that when connected to a USB 1.1 port, the device's performance suffers significantly. Otherwise, it connects reliably to wireless networks anywhere I go and rarely drops signals. It is also very easy to disconnect, reconnect, and swap between laptops and desktop computers. My first reaction when opening the box was that it was too big and would physically take up too much space when plugged in near other USB ports, but it comes with a VERY convenient extended USB cradle. The cradle, of course, allows you to connect the DWL-G132 on the desk, but works with other USB devices just as well, such as memory readers readers, flash memory drives, and even my webcam. That itself is probably the most convenient little gadget I've gotten in a while. If you know the process and can get this card installed properly, it will do very well for you. I'm sure that new revisions will be released containing working drivers in the box, and Windows driver packs will probably include them eventually at install time, but without knowing ahead of time the process was painful.
Also, keep in mind: this is a USB card, it is for portable use. If you try to consistently maximize the throughput, depending on the conditions, it may overheat. If you need to statically connect it to a single machine, get the PCI equivalent.

Hawking Wireless G USB Network Adapter with external SMA jack, Apple Compatible - HWUG1A Review

Hawking Wireless G USB Network Adapter with external SMA jack, Apple Compatible - HWUG1A
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I've been waiting a couple years now for a wireless manufacture to "get it" and realize there is a market for a USB wi-fi dongle with a detachable antenna. For all the PC Card versions out there with detachable antenna, it's taken forever for someone to come out with a USB equivalent. Finally, Hawking has, with the HWUG1.
The version I purchased is the Macintosh version (HWUG1A). This comes with a driver from a chip maker called Ralink. Ralink has been doing a public beta with this driver for a few years now, and I was already familiar with it. It's in pretty solid shape now. I guess you could say it's ready for prime time. And now that Ralink are actually getting money for it directly from OEMs like Hawking, MacSense and a couple of others, the driver is likely to be maintained and kept in good condition through OS X upgrades. This is an important consideration because, unlike some other nework interfaces, a wi-fi dongle requires a driver apart from anything that comes with the standard Mac OS X install.
The screw on antenna uses the popular and common SMA connector. Hawking sells several omni-directional and directional antennas that are compatible. I have also attached it to a Cantenna which works very well. But lately my favorite solution is to add a Tritium Flatenna reflector. I like the Flatenna because it packs so flat and slips right into my laptop case with my papers. Ironically, the Flatenna doesn't require a detachable antenna. But I still regard this feature as important.
Overall I'm very pleased with my purchase. I wish it had cost a bit less. I have been able to purchase D-Link wi-fi USB dongles, that I was previously using with the Ralink beta driver, for as little as $20. I paid over $50 for the Hawking. Also, the D-Link comes with a nice, weighted USB stand and extension cable. The Hawking does not. But with the included, foldable antenna, there is less need of a remote stand base.

Just put together a Windows 7 Media PC that's located in a cabinet a few rooms, a couple of walls (including a bathroom), and fifty feet away from the wireless access point. It's sitting next to a lot of A/V equipment -- in a place where my Nintendo WII has trouble getting access to the wireless connection. It has a great signal and I can stream movies off the Internet no problem. I would have given it a 5 star review because it performs exactly how I needed it to, but setup was actually a bit of a pain. The box says "Works with Windows 7" but when I went to install the drivers from the CD it said "Operating System not Supported." It was a bit annoying, but not a huge hurdle. After I hooked in a direct network cable, Windows 7 automatically downloaded the right drivers and everything started working.

NETGEAR WGXB102NA Wireless G Router Wall Pg Review

NETGEAR WGXB102NA Wireless G Router Wall Pg
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I use a wireless router in the house with great success. However, the range is pretty weak or my house is too big, and I am pretty sure it's not the latter. As a result, I researched a variety of solutions, none of which seemed too appealing to implement (bridges, wireless range extenders, new RF antenna, etc). It just all seemed too complicated, and I consider myself pretty tech savvy.
Fortunately, I was reading through some tech reviews and stumbled upon the Netgear Wireless wall-plugged router kit. It seemed like it was pretty simple to setup and easy to use. Well, I can report that it is exactly that.
There is no software to install at all. You simply plug in the ethernet cable from the cable modem in one room into the Netgear plug and then plug that into the wall. Check that all three green lights are lit and you are good to go.
The next step is to take the second half of the Netgear plug into the desired room in the house and plug it into an electric socket. When its three lights are lit, you have a connection and are good to go in there. My laptop computer picked up wireless signal immediately and I was surfing the web in no time flat. Basically, it was flawless.
So, WHY am I am only giving it four stars? Two reasons:
First, the wireless range of the Netgear plug is pretty weak. It definitely doesn't have the power of my main wireless modem. Then again, it doesn't have an antenna AND it still works, so it's no big deal; it's just not perfect.
Second, the Netgear plugs need to be plugged in somewhat near each other to function correctly and get the Homelink green light to turn green. When the Netgear plugs were plugged in on opposite ends of the house (what I was hoping for to maximize range), it did not achieve a homelink connection. However, when I moved the plugs to outlets that were closer together (but still outside my wireless routers range), it DID work. So, partial credit again here. While I cna't explain why it did not work, perhaps the electrical homelink signal degrades the farther the outlets are apart.
Anyway, everything is working pretty smoothly now and I am excited that I can get a signal in another area of the house that was not covered by internet previously.

Average Reviews:

I've had this router for about a month. It was easy to set up and its range is outstanding. I set it up at one end of the house and it works perfectly throughout my home as well outdoors (in my yard).
The reason I purchased this product over some other better known brands was because it had such great reviews (on other web sights)...and that it is the most sold router in China. At this point there are no negitives to this product. Also price was a major factor in my decision.
I would encourage anyone looking for an excellent router at a great price...to consider the TL-Link WR541G Wireless Router. You won't be sorry.
