Netgear MA401 802.11b Wireless PC Card Review

Netgear MA401 802.11b Wireless PC Card
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I received this wireless card as a gift with the Linksys wireless access point. This card was VERY easy to install in my IBM T21 laptop running Windows 2000. The Linksys wireless access point works great, but there have been a number of reviews on the difficulty configuring the Linksys card--we ran into similar problems after purchasing a Linksys Card for a second laptop in the house). After doing my own product comparison, I would highly recommend the NetGear wireless card over the Linksys card. For range of signal and ease of setup, the NetGear card is far superior. With the NetGear Card connectivity rarely drops, and I had no need to download additional drivers to install the card. When placed equidistant from the Linksys wireless access point, we'd see an Excellent Link Quality on the Netgear card Configuration utility, but on the similar utility on the Linksys card, we would see either poor or NO signal. This Netgear card is a fine product, I'm definitely enjoying the freedom of no wires while surfing the web.

NETGEAR WG111T Super-G Wireless USB 2.0 Adapter Review

NETGEAR WG111T Super-G Wireless USB 2.0 Adapter
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Although, this is a great deal: easy to setup, easy to install, easy to reset, etc., it does contain many problems.
One problem is that it heats up to quickly, mainly because its through USB, and USB travels really quick, especially if you are running a USB 2.0 port instead of 1.1 port.
Another main problem is that it doesn't function well unless you have a netgear router. I got a new router when I renewed my Verizon contract, and decided to get this so I could network my two comptuers without having to open it up. Often times it says that network is unavailable, even though the adapter is receiving fine. When I bought a Netgear router, it worked flawlessly, but if you don't have a netgear router, its a hassle.
The size is overall good, and you can either plug it in directly to the USB, or have a cord so that you can wrap it around or hang it on the side of your computer. Netgear has great customer support, even though their lines are often full the wait time is long, they are always there.
I've only had one for 2 months, but so far, it really hasn't given me any problems. Just make sure when your not using it, to unplug it, or it will heat up and wear quicker.

Wireless networking is constantly evolving, and the need for increasingly faster speeds and greater range is not only sought after, but expected. If better wireless speed and range with consistent wireless connections is what you're looking for, then NETGEAR has you covered with the WG111T Super-G Wireless USB 2.0 Adapter. With this handy device you'll have no more dropped connections, and you can kiss dead spots goodbye.
If you love all the new media applications, such as video and music streaming, you know you need a wireless connection that operates at lightning quick speeds to keep things running smooth. These new applications are nearly impossible with the old 802.11b wireless protocol, but they are certainly attainable with increased wireless speeds. The WG111T delivers the speed you desire. At 108 Mbps, it is up to ten times faster than 802.11b, and extends your network coverage up to four times more than standard Wireless-G protocol.
NETGEAR also helps you keep it simple with an easy-to-use, intuitive USB 2.0 interface. Just plug the WG111T into the external USB slot of your desktop or notebook PC, and you'll be ready to connect. Plus, you can keep your network private with WEP encryption, and this diminutive device is even upgradeable to the more secure WPA encryption (Wi-Fi Protected Access).
Setup is made quick and easy with the Smart Wizard install software. The WG111T has a compact, pocket-sized casing and with the included five foot USB cable, you can place this device near your computer for optimal signal strength for the best performance.
System requirements include a Pentium class PC, an available USB port, two MB of free hard drive space, and Microsoft Windows Vista, XP or 2000. Microsoft Vista drivers are available at www.netgear.com/vista.

D-Link DWL-122 802.11b 11 Mbps USB Adapter Review

D-Link DWL-122 802.11b 11 Mbps USB Adapter
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
When I first bought my TiVo (about a year ago), I totally hated that fact that I had this forty foot phone cord running from my bedroom to the next room where I had to split the phone connection. After about a month of that madness, TiVo announced the launch of their new Series 2 network dial-in. So I bought this piece of equipment (the only USB to wireless internet I could find at Best Buy) and my TiVo recognized it immediately.
There has never been an issue with the device and I'm always getting at least a 60% signal, which registers as "Very Good" on my Tivo. Since TiVo announced that the Home Media Option was becoming standard on all boxes, I have never had a problem listening to music or viewing photos. I loved the setup so much that I bought a new TiVo for my sister last month and insisted that she buy the Dlink product. She has had no issue and her connection is nearly always at 90% or higher.
I couldn't see me having a TiVo until without this technology and just keep having tremendous success and no service interruptions with it. I am extremely pleased.

Hawking HWU8DD Hi-Gain USB Wireless-G Dish Adapter Review

Hawking HWU8DD Hi-Gain USB Wireless-G Dish Adapter
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
(see my latest update at bottom)
We purchased this unit to try out on vacation at a beach house rental where typically we have to connect to neighborhood hot spots. At best we usually have to manipulate our laptop to just the right position to find a sporadic at best connection (you know-- we're ultimately standing on our head, wearing a foil helmet, and holding the laptop on edge etc-- that kind of thing).
I'll have to report back to you from the beach house next week but right now I just pulled it out of the box in our urban neighborhood setting at home. We typically have an abundance of signals here but only 1 or 2 have been connectable using my Netgear Rangemax 240 (which does better than my other standard b/g wireless adapter cards).
The Hi-Gain picks up a ton of signals in each direction I point it and is able to connect to nearly anything with a signal strength of 20% or better.
The Quick Start guide warns you all over the place to be gentle when moving the antenna on its axis or swivel, so comments from others on fragility seem to be correct. It looks like for travel purposes you'll need to keep it packaged in its box (6"x8"x4")
But I'd have to say-- so far so good. I have no immediate criticism or disappointment, other than the Wireless LAN Utility has a somewhat undersized window showing available network info--but this is a small issue.
I'll report back from the beach house next week to share what our final verdict is.
Oh the USB cord is no more than 6 feet long so you will need an extension or a longer USB cord (I ordered a 10' extension for $8). By the way, if you intend to replace the USB cord rather than use an extension, it uses a mini-USB connector (the type you see on cameras and camcorders-- your standard connector as you see on printer will not work.
-----------------------------------------------
AUGUST 4TH BEACH HOUSE UPDATE
As promised, here is a bit more after a week of trying it out. The good news is it does consistently work. The ability to move the dish around to locate the best signal is a big plus when you are in some remote area. I am currently connected solidly to a site about 1/2 mile away across a Bay (I have a clear line of sight) with 2 of 5 signal strength bars illuminated.
We just repeated a download speed test and confirmed the wireless connection at 4861kbs down and about 420kbs up.
To be honest though, I'd say the HWU8DD appears only slightly more sensitive than my current pcmcia adapter, a Netgear Rangemax 240 (WPNT511). Again the advantage here is the ability to move the dish to the best reception spot rather than manipulate the computer itself.
Again, the short length of the USB cord (about 5') means in most cases you really need an extension, but with the 10' USB passive extension we also purchased from Amazon, I'm able to sit where I want to and let the antenna do its work. The bad news is I have a cord draped across the floor which may drive my wife a bit nuts at times.
We also discovered this is not compatible with my wife or daughter's Mac (also not compatible with Linux.) I just checked the Hawking website that tells me only Windows Vista 32, XP, 2000, Me, and 98Se are supported with drivers.
Finally, I also have to agree with those who note both size and fragility again. For traveling "road warriors", this is a relatively bulky, and somewhat cheaply made little plastic unit to be taking along on your flights or packed in a car somewhere unless you are desperate. I can see it being totally destroyed in my luggage at the airport, so we won't be taking it along flying to Chicago next week. (Isn't it possible to create a flatter, more compact and durable unit these days?)
Who is this perfect for?
I'd say the RV'er is going to love it. It's great even here at the beach house where we're not worrying about little people playing with or tripping over the cord. At home, I'd hate to be carrying this little thing everywhere my laptop goes, though with a stationary computer, it may be a good solution.
If you've tried everything else, I'd definitely give this a test-drive, but keep in mind the need for a good return policy if you don't like it or if it doesn't work for you.
I'm giving it 4 stars because it does work as promised.
---------------------
Sept 19, 2007 Update: STOPPED WORKING
As mentioned in my review, the dish is somewhat fragile. Yesterday we noticed it quit functioning. Perhaps the box was jostled a bit too much, or the dish popped off its stand once too often (the dish connector pops out of its base sometimes leaving the connecting wire exposed or potentially vulnerable to breaking its solders).
I looked on the Hawking website and am going to try to return it to the manufacturer if I can. I am past the 30 day Amazon return period.
No bitterness, but just a little bit of frustration. Drop my rating to 2 stars.

BELKIN 150N WIRELESS USB ADAPTER (F6D4050) Review

BELKIN 150N WIRELESS USB ADAPTER (F6D4050)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I give this 5 stars ease of install (Windows Vista), but 1 star for actual performance (i.e. the ability to actually receive a Wi-Fi signal). The packaging was surprisingly easy to open, which is almost a half star these days. The setup was clear and easy with the install CD. I was happy to note that the insertion of the USB was a snap. I was worried that it would crowd out another USB port, but there was just enough room for another normal USB device in the adjacent space. Finally, the true test of this device is it's ability to receive a decent wireless signal. I studied the serial number and apparently this is version 2 of the series. A subsequent Internet search also confirmed that no Windows 7 drivers (as of 1/22/2010) were "available" as of yet. So if I were to move up to Win 7, I could have been stranded--but to be perfectly fair, the actual specifications on the box only mention Vista and XP.
I regret to say that I found that the Belkin N150 was terrible. It could not pick up a signal two rooms away, which is far below expectations. The walls in between are the regular drywall and stucco kind of walls, so I ruled out interference.
My recommendation is steer away from this model, but if you do get it be pretty sure you don't plan on upgrading to Win 7 anytime soon, and of course, to keep your receipt.

Cisco-Linksys Wireless-N PCI Adapter WMP300N Review

Cisco-Linksys Wireless-N PCI Adapter WMP300N
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This draft N PCI adapter works great paired with the Linksys WRT300N draft Wireless-N router. I have three computers in my home all using WMP300N cards along with my WRT300N router. I also have a Vonage phone adapter hooked into my router (via Ethernet cable). No complaints at all. This product is speedy and appears to be low latency as well. It can easily handle the 4 Megabits/second download rate from my cable internet without any glitches or slowing down. If only more websites transmitted that fast!
There is one caveat, however, I recommend that you do not install the Linksys software that comes on the CD. I found that it utilized quite a bit of CPU bandwidth just keeping the connection current. However, if you let Windows install the DRIVERS ONLY by searching the CD-ROM for the correct drivers, then it works perfectly and doesn't burn up any extra CPU cycles. With the Linksys driver software installed, I was seeing upwards of 30-50% CPU utilization even when not surfing the web. With the drivers installed via Windows XP hardware installation wizard, CPU utilization went down to practically zero whether surfing the web or not. Great product, especially for the price!
Addendum regarding drivers - February 24, 2007 - The newest drivers do not cause the CPU utilization problems. I still don't think they are necessary, but at least they don't cause high CPU utilization problem.

The Linksys Wireless-N PCI Adapter installs in most desktop and tower PCs, and lets you put your computer almost anywhere in the building without the cost and hassle of running network cables. Now you don't have to drill holes in your walls and climb through the attic or cellar to get connected to the network. The Wireless-N PCI Adapter uses the very latest wireless networking technology, Wireless-N (draft 802.11n).By overlaying the signals of multiple radios, Wireless-N's "Multiple In, Multiple Out" (MIMO) technology multiplies the effective data rate.Unlike ordinary wireless networking technologies that are confused by signal reflections, MIMO actually uses these reflections to increase the range and reduce "dead spots" in the wireless coverage area. The robust signal travels farther, maintaining wireless connections up to 4 times farther than standard Wireless-G.With Wireless-N, the farther away you are, the more speed advantage you get.It works great with standard Wireless-G and -B equipment, but when both ends of the wireless link are Wireless-N, the throughput can be increased even more by using twice as much radio band, yielding speeds up to 12 times as fast as standard Wireless-G.Once you're connected, you can surf the web, keep in touch with your e-mail, and share files and other resources such as printers and network storage with other computers on the network. To protect your data and privacy, your wireless connection is secured by up to 256-bit WPA2 encryption. The included Setup Wizard will walk you through configuring the adapter to your network's settings, step by step.

D-Link DWL-G630 Wireless Cardbus Adapter, 802.11g, 54Mbps Review

D-Link DWL-G630 Wireless Cardbus Adapter, 802.11g, 54Mbps
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I agree with several other reviews here that the card is bad. But, if you had bought it and don't want to spend money returnig it, some tweaking would make it work good! A good product should be real plug and play but this is not!!
I bought it as a router and pc card (both D-link 802.11g) set to use at home. I have my desktop connected by cable to the router and my laptop connecting wirelessly. Installation was a snap for both the router and the card and they worked fine and I was able to browse and share files between both the computers - all at good speed.
Trouble started when I went to work with my laptop or when I used laptop on its battery. The card took a long time to recognize the network and the computer kept saying 'cound not connect to network drives'.
The other problem was that my battery drained very fast. So fast to the extent that some times just booting up and reading my emails will already have used up 75% battery!!
Minor trouble; the D-link utility does the exact samething that Windows XP wireless connection manager does. However, there is no (easy) way to disable the utility from loading. Even if you use windows XP to configure wireless connections, the D-link utility sits there and does nothing.
Solutions:
1. You can prevent the D-link utility from loading and this improves performance - makes connections quicker actually. Click Start..Run.. ; Type 'msconfig' and click OK. In the window that appears click the 'Startup' tab; You will see a long list of programs that are enabled at start up. Uncheck 'airplus.exe' and 'reg.exe' both of which run from the D-link installation directory.
2. To conserve battery, Right click the wireless connection icon on the tray; click status... click Properties... Click 'configure' right next to the D-link airplus g card's name. Go to the advanced tab and choose 'powersavemode' from the list..choose property 'normal' or 'maximum' to save your battery.
These two actions make a card actually work better than using D-link's utility (Do all tweaking at your own risk! It worked for me, but, cannot guarantee it'll work for you w/o causing any trouble). Good luck!!

Just put together a Windows 7 Media PC that's located in a cabinet a few rooms, a couple of walls (including a bathroom), and fifty feet away from the wireless access point. It's sitting next to a lot of A/V equipment -- in a place where my Nintendo WII has trouble getting access to the wireless connection. It has a great signal and I can stream movies off the Internet no problem. I would have given it a 5 star review because it performs exactly how I needed it to, but setup was actually a bit of a pain. The box says "Works with Windows 7" but when I went to install the drivers from the CD it said "Operating System not Supported." It was a bit annoying, but not a huge hurdle. After I hooked in a direct network cable, Windows 7 automatically downloaded the right drivers and everything started working.

So I have been using this adapter for just over a week. My router is in the next room, 7 feet away, and while I do have continuous signal, I only get one bar out of 5 the majority of the time. I won't complain for the price, but I would be hesitant in buying this if you were using it at a farther distance from your router. I would try discovering the range it has myself, however I am using a desktop PC and not a laptop. Hope this may help others in their decision.

There isn't much to say about a wireless adapter except that it works or it doesn't. This one works well. It is fast and the board and antennae seem to be well constructed. I installed it on a system running 64-bit Windows. The Windows driver would not work with it at all and, in the beginning, neither would the ASUS driver. Device manager found the card but the network could not find it. After a bit of googling, I shut down my Kaspersky firewall and reinstalled the ASUS driver. It started and ran perfectly. I reactivated the firewall and it continued to work properly. I'm not a computer guru so I cannot explain why this would be. However, if you have trouble getting the card to work, try disabling your firewall software.

Cisco-Linksys WUSB54G Wireless-G USB Adapter Review

Cisco-Linksys WUSB54G Wireless-G USB Adapter
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I have a SOHO that uses a wired 10/100 switched network. Already part of this network is a Linksys single port Cable / DSL Router. When it came time to make the jump to wireless, the WAP54G seemed the logical choice, as I would not have to reconfigure anything on my existing network. For my initial conversions, I was converting a desktop PC and an older laptop. For this review, I'll be discussing at the WUSB54G. Look for reviews on all these items posted separately.
I decided on the WUSB54G because I did not have any available internal slots. This computer may be replaced in a year or two, and unplugging the network card from a USB port seemed a lot more attractive than opening the case. Actually, the installation is almost a simple as plugging the adapter into an available USB port.
My initial installation was using Version 2.0 of the installation software. The significance of that will be explained later. Regardless of your version of Windows, I suggest installing the software first. This will eliminate any potential problems in the installation process. Make sure you know your network name and WEP Key. You will need to supply that information during installation or you will not be able to connect right away. If you don't have the key handy, it can be input later, but it is not as convenient.
The Wizard does a good job of walking you through each step. Once done, you will need to reboot. Don't disconnect from the wired network just yet. Wait until the next phase is completed. On boot, you computer should detect the new hardware and install the correct drivers for it. The next step could take a while, so be patient. Your new wireless network card will search for a signal, an access point, and you should be prompted when a network is found. If more than one network is detected, a distinct possibility with the proliferation of wireless networks, you will quickly realize the advantages of naming you network something other that the default and of applying a WEP Key to your network.
The initial connection took about two minutes, but seemed a lot longer! You will see an icon on the Bottom Right of the Task Bar indicating you are connected. I do one final check by opening a command prompt and using the command "ipconfig /all" to show all my adapters. If there's a difference in IP addressing ranges, reboot one more time. If both the wired and wireless connections show IP address in the same range, you're ready to unplug the wired connection. Now try opening your web browser. If you can surf, you're all done.
My experience with this installation was very positive. The wizard was friendly, the physical installation could not have been easier, I had all the information on hand I needed and I was wireless after the first reboot. I'm using this adapter with a G network and I'm getting the full throughput.
One final note: this installation went so smoothly I got another adapter from a local dealer that had a price too good to pass up. When I got home, however, I noticed a small sticker that said this was for Windows 2000 and Windows XP only. I then noticed the serial number and installation software said version 1.0. Hmmm... this was going on a Windows 98SE machine. The hardware specs looked identical, from what I could determine from the box, so I tried an experiment and used the version 2.0 software. It worked just fine. BEWARE: this is not an endorsement that this will work in every case nor should you conclude there is no difference between versions. I strongly suggest you try to get the latest version hardware and software for optimal performance.

TiVo AG0100 Wireless G USB Network Adapter for TiVo Series 2 and Series 3 DVRs Review

TiVo AG0100 Wireless G USB Network Adapter for TiVo Series 2 and Series 3 DVRs
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
First, thank you to the previous reviewers: I had several questions regarding this product such as "does it support Wireless Encryption?" and the previous reviews really helped...by the way yes, it supports WEP.
What you will need if you want to use this:
1) Wireless Internet Access (Wireless Router and Connection to Internet) within range of your DVR
2) Series 2 DVR (with USB plug)
3) A computer for some of the advanced features
Once you have these two things then using this product is amazingly simple to set up for about 80% of "Lucky People."
1) Plug it In
2) Follow the Instructions
3) Enter your WEP key (alphanumeric or hexadecimal --- alphanumeric is much easier)
4) I had to restart my DVR
5) If you're connecting a computer and using TivoToGo, you have to install the software on your computer...which also has to be connected to the network for your TIVO to see it and for your computer to see your TIVO and you'll need your Media Access Key.
Benefits I received from this product:
1) I don't have to use a phone line to get updates (no dialing)
2) TIVO updates come much faster over Broadband (Faster updates)
3) I bought TIVO to Go Plus --extra $$ from TIVO for the license key that you use with the computer software and I can listen to my iPod music through my Bose in my living room
4) I have my picture library shared....baby pictures are nice on the television....but caution, the quality of the pictures will only be as good as your TV....ie HDTV is still not as good as a good laptop screen and if you don't have HDTV, they'll only look as good as your TVs best resolution. Its still very cool to show baby pictures on the big TV.
5) I have a huge Attached Hard Drive array on my computer...its really a Server...so I offload movies I plan to keep and they're always there when I want to watch them so the 180hour DVR size limit kindof doesn't apply.
Issues / Challenges:
1) You have to know a little bit about computers if you want to get some of the more complex benefits such as share pictures, music, download movies.....ie you have to know about firewalls, how to install software, IP addresses and things like that.
2) If you have wireless access already set up and just want to use it to connect to the internet and get program updates instead of using your phone line, its pretty easy but you'll have to a) have DHCP turned on or b) assign it a static IP......for those of you who think I just typed in Greek, chances are that you have DHCP but if you happen not to, you could bump into problems.
3) If you want to listen to your IPod, share pictures, download to your computer, please make sure to read the software/hardware requirements for your computer.
Overall, these are my thoughts on the average person installing this easily:
A) 80% of the people who buy this should have Zero problems installing this product because you have a standard network configuration, know your way around networks, or are just lucky.
B) 20% of the people who buy this who don't have a standard Wireless network configuration AND don't have some knowledge of networking....you could become frustrated at trying to connect this product ESPECIALLY if you want to use some of the advanced functionality.
My Luck:
1) Start to finish it took me 5 minutes to install this to get its updates through the wireless network.
2) It took me about 30 minutes to install all the other software and get everything configured to share music, pictures and enable TivoToGo on my computer.
