NETGEAR PS121 USB 2.0 Mini Print Server Review

NETGEAR PS121 USB 2.0 Mini Print Server
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The installation is a little challenging. However, after reading the "troubleshooting" section of the little instruction manual, it worked. Not sure about long-term reliability, as the unit seems to get very hot. Size-wise, perfect! No perceptible delay in spooling the printer. It does not make economic sense to buy a wireless print server, if the router and the printer remain stationary. This print server is great for my use, i.e. wireless Internet in one room, with remote printing in another. Will report back if any problems develop. Remember, be patient and keep trying all of the options during the installation. FOLLOW-UP: Worked fine for two months until my old Canon BJC-2100 printer died (of natural causes that I believe are unrelated to the print server). Upon trying to re-install the print server with a new Canon Pixma IP3000 printer, I once gain ran into installation challenges. This time the print server did not recognize the printer nor the network connection. The written instructions did nothing. However, after visiting Netgear's website, I followed the recommendation to disable my software firewall (PC Cillin 2005 in my case). Low and behold, everything is now working, and I am once again a satisfied Netgear user. Does exactly what it is supposed to do (allow remote prining or printer sharing), with minimal, if any delay in spooling. Bottom line: Good product, lousy instructions!
FURTHER UPDATE (September 15, 2007): Two years after purchase, the original PS121 (which I reviewed) started to act up, i.e. was periodically NOT recognizing my printer. After re-installing from the Netgear disc several times, I got tired and decided to "upgrade" to a PS121 with "version 2" software. Before doing this I had trouble finding another brand that would work. No go on D-Link (not compatible per website) and Air-Link (compatible but did not work for me!) Again, the Netgear install was a bit tricky, foiled initially by "Norton Antibot" program. Be sure to disable any and all antivirus, anti-spyware and firewall programs!!! The newer PS121 version runs a PS121v2 indicator in the system tray, which gives a "positive assurance" that the printer is recognized. The only time I get a red light (not connected) is when the printer is powered off. After two months, everything is working fine. I would still recommend this item, however, make sure you have the Version 2 (v2) model. CAUTION to all: Make sure you visit Netgear's website prior to purchase, to ensure compatibility with your operating system and specific printer. I can't understand why the printer manufacturers can't market their own print servers. This would certainly help with the "compatibility" issue. I don't think this works with VISTA OS. Another reviewer mentioned downloading drivers from Netgear's website. I have XP, so no issue here. If problems do develop, I will report back.

Belkin F7D1301 Wireless Router Review

Belkin F7D1301 Wireless Router
Average Reviews:

August 11: I bought this router from Walmart and proved a bad buy. Although installation is easy, but the router drops signal 5-6 times per day. Whenever It drops signal, I have to unplug it, wait for 10-15 seconds, then plug it again with power supply. Not funny!November, 02, 2010: Belkin customer service has spent around 30-45 minutes to upgrade firmware for this router. Their latest firmware has actually solved the frequent signal dropping problems and for the last couple of weeks I have not been experiencing any signal drop. I also get 150 mbps data transfer speed for laptop and 135 mbps for desktop. It also covers entirely my one bedroom apartment( 480 sq. feet). Right now, I am satisfied with this product and getting good value for my money.
I sincerely suggest others to buy it. I give this product 4 star.

NETGEAR WG311 Wireless-G PCI Adapter Review

NETGEAR WG311 Wireless-G PCI Adapter
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
First of all, this card is a great product and better than any of the competitors, to include Linksys and D-Link. With the deployment of SP2 you will need to change the install procedure for the V2 card so that it works without causing your system to reboot constantly. DO NOT install the utility and drivers ahead of time as the instructions in the packaging tell you to. Rather, install the card, then boot up and let windows detect the hardware. Instead of installing the drivers automatically, use the "I Will Select" the hardware option then through the hardware wizard browse to the XP Drivers folder on the disc and let windows install ONLY the driver, not the utility. XP has a very good wireless management utility and you will give up nothing by not having the Netgear utility installed. The card will finish install and you'll be up and running.

The NETGEAR WG311 Wireless-G PCI Adapter makes it easy for you to provide wireless internet access to your desktop computer, letting you surf the web, check email, and chat online without the need for cables.
Easy Setup The WG311 is a PCI adapter and requires a Pentium 3 class PC with an available PCI 2.2 slot for installation. It supports Windows Vista and is also compatible with Windows XP, 2000, 98SE, and Me. Setup is as simple as inserting the adapter into a PCI slot and installing the included software. A built-in stub antenna helps you receive as strong a signal as possible for the fastest possible speeds.
Fast and Secure The NETGEAR WG311 supports the 802.11g protocol standard for speeds up to 54 Mbps and a longer range than previous-generation 802.11b adapters. With a good connection, you'll notice the difference right away as you'll be able to stream high-quality music without any hiccups and load videos much faster. Downloading files is up to five times faster than it was with 802.11b. Since 802.11g is also interoperable with 802.11b, you don't have to worry about whether or not you'll get a connection elsewhere if you move your computer around; the WG311 will automatically detect the network and allow you to connect to it at the highest speed possible.
The adapter supports 40/64-bit and 128-bit WEP encryption for security so you don't have to worry about anyone eavesdropping on your emails or stealing your passwords. The included software makes managing different WEP passwords a breeze as you can set up different profiles for each wireless network you connect to, saving yourself the trouble of having to type in encryption keys each time.
The NETGEAR WG311 Wireless-G PCI Adapter is backed by a 1-year warranty.

TRENDnet 54Mbps Wireless G PCI Adapter TEW-423PI Review

TRENDnet 54Mbps Wireless G PCI Adapter TEW-423PI
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I have multiple PCs linked to a wireless router and have used 54Mbps network card from Dlink, Netgear, Belkin, Microsoft and now TRENDnet. All of the cards were about $20, though the TRENDnet card is the only one that didn't require submitting a rebate form (and with my Dlink purchase, I missed the submission date on a $30 rebate so that one cost me $50).
The Netgear and Belkin cards were terrible (weak signal, dropped connections) and I ended up returning them. The Dlink and Microsoft cards on the other hand worked fine, though the initial install wasn't without some aggravation.
I was planning to get another Dlink card for my latest purchase simply because I have a Dlink router but I couldn't find the card for less than $30 (after rebate) which is why I decided to give TRENDnet a try. I'd never heard of the company before, but the reviews from users were mostly positive and the price was great. Well, I installed the card 2 days ago and it's been working flawlessly. Some reviewers had install issues and many mentioned problems with the drivers on the disk, but I didn't experience any issues at all - NONE! I loaded the connection management software, turned off the PC, popped in the card, turned on the PC, loaded the drivers from the disk, restarted the PC and I was done. It took less than 10 minutes and has been working perfectly.
As soon as I restarted the PC it connected to my network. All I had to do was enter the security code using the connection software. It now connects automatically every time and hasn't lost or dropped the signal once. This PC is in a finished basement office with the wireless access point on the 1st floor about 30 feet (2 walls and a floor) away, and the signal strength has been very good to excellent. I was planning to update the drivers, but everything is working so smoothly right now I don't think I'll bother (why mess with a good thing?).
Based on my experience, I would highly recommend this card. I'm fixing up an old PC for my daughter and will definitely be ordering another TRENDnet card. It works well and it's cheap which is a great (and rare) combination.

D-Link ADSL2/2+ Modem/Wireless Router Review

D-Link ADSL2/2+ Modem/Wireless Router
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I bought this D-Link modem/wireless router to replace a Speedstream 5360 modem and a Linksys wireless router. It works MUCH better than the other system I was using. This system has been very stable--no more random disconnects from the internet or continual problems with the wireless system that I was experiencing previously. The D-Link wireless router has a much stronger signal than the Linksys it replaced. My D-Link system is in a building next to my house (about 20 feet away) and I can recieve signals anywhere in the house on a laptop with no problem at all--the Linksys was only usable in one room. The set up was easy and I like the combination modem/router--does not clutter up the desk. D-Link has created a good prodcut for my application.
