(More customer reviews)The unit works as expected. I use Comcast which lists this unit as compatible. It was setup and running in seconds with our Unix (Linux) operated computers, the Windows one took a few minutes, better than expected if I may say so.
I like the small design, woud rather have it standing straight up, mine did not come with supporting legs.
There is no power switch on the unit, it stays on all the time. Not only a waste of energy and additional wear on the unit, it also makes the network visible all day.
Bottom line: It is a more affordable product and works fine. No need to go go DOCSIS 3 as in my case my provider does not have it setup yet. I recommend to check with your provider first before spending money on DOCSIS 3. Same with wireless "N", no need for it if you are not setup yet, that includes the computers you are about to connect as well.

SURFboard SB5101 DOCSIS 2.0 Data Modem Review

I bought the Motorola Surfboard 5101 a couple of weeks ago on Amazon. Think they must have gotten a new vendor because the price was about $15 cheaper and there were hundreds of reviews for this cable modem.

I just wanted to point out some things that I picked up from the other reviews. I am a Comcast customer and I wanted to avoid paying the $3/month rental charge for their RCA modem. When I connected the 5101 even though I had all green lights I still had no internet connection. That is because you have to call Comcast and tell them your new MAC ID number that is shown on the modem. This is not pointed out anywhere in the instructions. The Comcast tech did not ask for my serial number. After a few minutes he made the change and said everything was OK.

I rebooted the modem and computer but I still could not connect to the net. I remembered from other reviews that it takes about ten or fifteen minutes for the change to take place. After 15 minutes I rebooted everything and I had my internet connection.

Also there is no mention that the 5101 works with Vista. Thought I might have to download some drivers but I didn't. It works just fine with Vista.

After two weeks the 5101 modem has been working with no problems. I do use that Standby button when I am not connected to the net just because all those green lights are a distraction.

(More customer reviews)We just ordered th SB-5120 from Fry's, and they sent this model instead. The SB-5101 has almost identical specifications, just the case is a little different, and I guess the 5120 includes TurboDOCS software. We previously had an old Toshiba, which has given stellar service for 5 years, but we decided it was time to replace it before it failed. The Motorola Surfboard was very easy to install, just plug in the ethernet cable to the router (or to your PC), connect the coaxial cable and plug in the power. There is no need to install software or drivers unless you want to use a USB connection. We also had to call Cox Highspeed Internet to give their tech support the new serial number and MAC address of the new cable modem (the Cox website neglects to tell you this step). That was the hardest part of the whole process - it took about 20 minutes, taking into account resetting and rebooting the system at their request. I am not sure that this modem is any faster than the old one, but we have a low signal on our line to start with.
Overall it was very easy to set up and has been fast and reliable. It plays nicely with our router, and has caused no problems in constant daily use on a home network with 4 computers.

Motorola WR850G Wireless Broadband Router Review

(More customer reviews)I was skeptical of buying this router. Primarily because I couldn't find any reviews on it. But I like Motorola products. I decided to buy it. I must say that this router is great. It's small and stylish so it doesn't take up a lot of clutter. It has a lot of features such as port triggering and virtual servers and parental controls among all the other features you would expect from a wireless broadband router. It also includes WPA support with either TKIP or AES encryption.
I also get excellent signal and quality throughout my house. Too bad the other manufacturer's don't make routers as good as this one.
So if your looking for a stable router, you can't go wrong with the WR850G.

Netopia 3347-02 ADSL2 Wireless Router Review

(More customer reviews)As others have mentioned, the product is not new(had an @bellsouth.net PPoE login for a business), but don't let that deter you. It works with no problems on AT&T in West Tennessee. Just make sure you set the correct VPI/VCI settings(VPI 8, VCI 35 for Tennessee, VPI 0 for some other states), put in your PPoE Username and Password, and you are done.
Just to be safe, it would probably be a good idea to factory reset the modem as soon as you get it, no telling what other settings may be lurking in there.
This modem was used to replace a 2Wire 2700HG that was, well, terrible(Unstable, forgets wireless password, drops packets under light wireless usage). I had been using the Qwest model 3347 for the past two years before moving back to Tennessee, so replacing the 2Wire with this was a no-brainer. I replaced the 2Wire at my brother's house with the 3347 from Amazon and it solved his issues as well. I have since ordered another two units for future use/spares.
As a side note for @att.net customers. If you do not know your PPoE password(It is randomly generated by AT&T when you sign up, not chosen by you) just enter a random password. Your modem will still connect, but you will be placed in AT&T's walled garden. Open up your browser and go to any website, it will redirect you to AT&T's internal troubleshooting site. After you verify your DOB or SSN, it will try to determine your modem model for about 10 minutes and say that it cannot. Select that you have a modem from a different source and it will give you your PPoE login information. There is no need to call AT&T.

(More customer reviews)I work in the computer/software industry and am generally critical of the cheap throw-away quality of most electronics. I was nervous about this purchase because I had read two other reviewers mention 1) The Motorola SBG900 allocated two IPs from the broadband provider such as Comcast if you connected more than one computer, and 2) the range was poor. I doubted the first, and I live in a small house for the second.

I have been using a DLINK wireless router for the last 1-1/2 yrs. Reliable but it has a high-pitched hum that is incredibly irritating. I returned the first, only to get another with the same whine, so I figured it was a manufacturing/component flaw. I stuffed it in a corner of the basement to keep from hearing it. This was my experience with my DLINK wireless router, not the Motorola.
So here's what I found re: the Motorola SBG900. Powered it up, Comcast prompted me to download their "installation software" when it detected an unknown cable modem, clicked Yes 5 times, and was on the Internet. Then I configured the wireless portion to match the WEP 128-bit settings from the powered-off DLINK (used the same SSID, Shared Key, etc.), activated the firewall, hid broadcast of the SSID, and both my laptop and desktop connected without a hitch. Even I was surpised. Their wireless NICs are DLINK and Intel, so compatibility wasn't an issue. I never even opened the manual which comes on the CD. I was happy to see a number of WPA (next generation) security options when selecting the encryption mode. However, I didn't bother with that now, but may later, since I'm already on 128-bit WEP. Also the range is the same as my older DLINK, so I'm very content with this purchase. Very happy to reduce the clutter by consolidating devices. Even in the world of MIMO and future technologies, 802.11G (54Mbs) is fine for my needs. I recommend this cable modem.
